I wrote a song called "Superstar" which I sent to Richard and Karen in 1979. I suppose we would have had to rethink the title if they had recorded it, but it was about the difficulties of a famous couple:
"We were so good together
They would watch us and take note
Of everything we said and wrote
We were so fine together
When the spotlight hit our cars
We would descend among the crowd as superstars
Never to know, they were never to know
Of the life we lived
Show after show, covering up as we'd go
All the damages
We were fine for awhile at the start
The mistake was to take it to heart
To believe we were gold as the records we made
When in fact we were cold and afraid
They call us Superstar
They don't care who we really are
Superstar
If we'll just be what they need"
