If you all think about it, Karen's illness and death crashed thru that ceiling of shame, and made anorexia a more studied and acknowledged disease, as did Rock Hudson's sickness and suffering with AIDS around the same time. We became a much more open culture at that point when it came to talking about these things. Yet I remember thinking, I didn't want Karen to be remembered more for this illness, than her talent. It seems like they can never tell the story about her without this as the final chapter. I really wish we could erase that. The sickness just wrapped her up because the public focus can become so intense, hardly anyone can cope with the pressure and criticism the public brings to bear. When you become famous so early, so unexpectedly, you can't believe what is happening to you. It's exciting, but scarey as well, since so many people start telling you "how to be" for your image, etc. Don't we see the same thing in Mariah Carey, and other pop stars, and entertainers? And the "thin" thing...it's never enough, and then it's TOO much, so you're never JUST RIGHT. Ugh. Palma, that's why your song is so appropriate. I would've argued tooth-and-nail with Karen, trying to get her to eat. By the way, as she appeared to me in my dreams was with a body "weight" I'd estimate at between 130-140 lbs.

Hey Rick, just noticed, when did I become a Certified Silver Member? I like that (altho I'm not sure what it means!) You became a certified Silver Member once you made 45 posts on the forum. At last count you had 47 - all but three are from this party.

Too much emphasis is put out on how one looks this day and age.....gets to be an obsession which can keep many in deep depression! Everyone craves to be accepted and loved, but we're looking to the wrong things to feel good about ourselves inside. How sad! But we all get affected, somehow......we get self-value and self-image mixed up.

Yes, Palma this thread will have it's permanant home on the forum for all the read whenever they want to. it will be locked so no other posts can be added after tonight. That way the memory is locked in for as long as this forum stays open.
Several people have left so maybe we will call it a night in the next 20 minutes. I will let you know just before i decide to close the basement doors.
Good night Dave and Smoothie - thank you for stopping by.

hi board, I'm a guest to this. I listened to the three Carpenter songs I have on iTunes earlier today, and did a Google search for Karen tonight just for giggles, and here I am. Funny how that internet thing works...

Yes, Dave, they say when you die, you recover a beautiful body, no illnesses, or deformities, and that we are all around 30 or 33 in heaven. That means she was a perfect angel. I'd like to hear more about what you've seen in your dreams when we all come back to chat, or you can write me at the Yahoo address Rick has posted. That goes for all...I would love to hear from you in any way you like.
Cameron, that was a simply beautiful question to me...thank you. It feels like having the most blessed "superwand" at your disposal...knowing you can heal people, make them feel wonderful and emotional things by modulating your voice, your words in their direction. It's like being a fairy princess, the Glinda The Good Witch, waving this sound in the air, and knowing you have the ability to connect, to help, to touch, and that people can take it WITH them, listen anytime they want. I have had the privilege of seeing people come to the altar where I am singing, and literally, fall on their knees, not to worship my singing, but because they can better commune with God because the atmosphere has changed. I am humbled indeed. That is why I think my Christian album has probably touched more people than almost anything I've ever done. Thank you for letting me answer this very personal question honestly.

Hi Nashville guest. Did you mean you were "bored" reading our postings, or "bored" tonight in general, so you logged on? Nice to have you. I'm the "guest of honor" and this website is an awesome work of love. I am the recipient tonight, just so you know, you have been guided here perhaps not by chance! Tell us about yourself.

I always think though...and had Karen lived, she had PLANNED to talk about her battle with eating disorders...I always think that she knew, that this would be a part of her...to help others...as that was a part of her caring and compassionate self. That would have been another part of her legacy. The other of course, was her music...but sometimes entertainers want to do more than just sing...they want to be involved in other things...help out in some way or bring awareness to issues not well known. The fact that when in the hospital and in therapy, while visitng with the younger girls who were eating disorder victims...she would say, "Stop hurting yourself" and I think she knew what they were suffering and didn't want them to go the route she went. And she wanted to survive and live. As she told good pal Dionne Warwick, "I've got a lot of living left to do" before she passed on. She wanted to add to the world in more ways than one, besides music, is my feeling.

Funny how that internet thing works... Hi guest from Nashville. Karen Carpenter is so wonderful and she has way more excllent songs than just three. Here's a few you may want to download from iTunes: "Love Me For What I Am", "Making Love In The Afternoon", "Road Ode", "Boat To Sail", "One More Time", "This Masquerade", "Two Sides" - gee the list can go on and on - Carpenters and Karen Carpenter recorded tons of excellent songs.
Gee, we still have new people showing up. maybe we'll keep the doors open just a little longer.

Palma, and everyone it's great to read from you all. One question, did the Carpenters record "Big Office Star?" Do you think Richard has tape?

But I have to add...at that time in 1983. I was 10 when Karen died. But I remember hearing about this strange word ANOREXIA where someone wouldn't eat. One of the girls in the grade above me, named Bridget...who had anorexia...she became a skeleton...I remember seeing her, and it scared me to see her bone thin....and someone made mention that she had that disease that Karen Carpenter had...so it was quite BIZARRE...but sad, so sad to lose her...Karen...imagine all the songs she could have done...so much more...
