In briefly finishing my thought on the "simplicity" of Christian music, I was inspired to write in a more simple manner myself, as I tried very hard to resist intricate melodies. Song after song appeared and as I began to see the effect the words and music were having on people, I was very encouraged to continue this way. I DID, however, have second verses, I couldn't give THAT up, but I wrote melodies that could be more easily learned...I think! Tell me what you think when you hear that album, The Broken Cup, and if you think the fans might enjoy some of the songs, please offer them samples if you wish. I listen in my mind, and can hear Karen singing these songs, only a MAJOR THIRD lower than her "kid sister" ME. Once I recieve the CD (Broken Cup) I will share some snippets with the gang. I said earlier I would be getting the disc on Tuesday - but I was mistaken I will be getting it on Wednesday - that's when my messenger will reach me.
As for Gino Vannelli - I also like him quite a bit. He is a great talent.

I forgot to mention Bruce Hornsby in my list of favorites. I like all the open chords, kind of like the Old West. Don't understand all the words, but what ELSE is new?

Bye Palma. It was a PLEASURE to chat with you. I always love to hear other people's thoughts on different things, to get a different perspective...sorta like a potpourri or a rainbow...all with other's thoughts and personalities so different but added together make for something unique and special.
Take care everyone else...and thanks RICK!!!

I like CLEAR words...I like the listener to get every one of them. I liked that about Karen. If you lose the listener, what have you got? Somewhere along our musical line, that became UNCOOL. I guess I'm UNCOOL.

Gino Vanelli has been around a long time. I have an old record album that he did years ago, and you are right, he is a great talent.

has anyone ever heard Luther Vandross's version of Superstar? Luther does an excellent version of the song he was a great vocalist - but not even close to the intricacy of Karen and Richard's arrangement is unbeatable.
80's-90's alternative rock /punk group Sonic Youth did an interestingly dark recording of "Superstar" which I like quite a bit.

I guess I'm UNCOOL. I think Carpenters became UNCOOL sometime in 1976 - but by 1997 they were considered COOL. Now Carpenters are considered CLASSIC. It's interesting how the music listening public has gone full circle with the Carpenters.

Yes, I like clear words too......the message of the song is as important as the melody to me....but I guess it depends what kind of mood I'm in, too. Sometimes I just want to feel a good beat.....but most times I listen to a song for how it speaks in me, to me, or from me. Words do matter, but I fear we're losing alot of that today because alot of the music seems to focus more on the beat. Music needs a balance of meaning and melody to me.

I wrote a song called "Superstar" which I sent to Richard and Karen in 1979. I suppose we would have had to rethink the title if they had recorded it, but it was about the difficulties of a famous couple: "We were so good together They would watch us and take note Of everything we said and wrote
We were so fine together When the spotlight hit our cars We would descend among the crowd as superstars
Never to know, they were never to know Of the life we lived Show after show, covering up as we'd go All the damages
We were fine for awhile at the start The mistake was to take it to heart To believe we were gold as the records we made When in fact we were cold and afraid
They call us Superstar They don't care who we really are Superstar If we'll just be what they need"

Gee, I secretly hope this website will give me a good reason to go the studio to start cutting and orchestrating all the songs I never got to hear Karen sing, that she got from me. If I thought I had an audience, I would start tomorrow. The funny thing is, there are so many songs in my archives that they received, that I would not record them years later for "fear" of sounding like her, in a world that didn't want that "dated" sound. Isn't that terrible? A star of her caliber, and they shoved her in the box marked "dated" and "vanilla" and dismissed an era. And the irony of sharing a similar sound, and being told I was too Goodie Two Shoes, like her. I'm so happy you are all her fans. It's vindication.

Wow, love the lyrics to your Supestar song, Palma! Would have loved to hear Karen's voice put to a melody to those words!!! The words can make you almost feel the song.....would have been a fantastic song for Karen & Richard to do!!! Very fitting!!!

I came on late. Are there samples of this Broken Cup CD to be found somewhere? Sorry for the naivete.... There are two song samples in this thread - not from "The Broken Cup" but from other discs by palma - they are called "he's There, She's There" and "Free Of You". Try looking back around post number 100.
As a matter of fact here's a quote of the orinal post below. I am listening to Palma's latest album "The Broken Cup" and it is beautiful. I would recommend everyone get it...They are all original songs she wrote and sings. You will love it! Speaking about Palma's "The Broken Cup" Cd, I've received my copy - but it's not quite yet here with me. It's still with I disagreeociate who collects all my mail. I'll get my copy on Tuesday.
Palma has three CD's available for purchase.
