So right, Cameron, I'm sure as she came into her own, became more independent, and joined the ranks of solidified STARS she could have opened up on this. It seems to me she had alot of pressure to NOT CHANGE to stay close to her brother's opinions, her mother's sense of decorum, and the nasty clatter of rag magazines trying to destroy the careers they prey upon. Had her foray into a "hipper" style worked with Phil Ramone, she might have gathered strength to assert herself. What ashame everyone was so quick to "limit" her step outside the boundaries of what the public had come to expect. Afterall, artists have to grow for us to remain interested, and for them to fulfill their artistic potential. It seemed like everyone "jumped" on her for trying something new. And it crushed her. And the secret isolated her, and made her feel ashamed in ways we could never know about. I bet everyone around her would have handled it differently, if they knew how dismayed their comments made her.

Hi, new guests. This wonderful website has invited me to talk about my experiences writing for the Carpenters, and tonight's chat is just a great social gathering, with some serious questions and comments in between. We've been here since 8pm. Eastern time. I am having quite a fantastic experience.

I bet everyone around her would have handled it differently, if they knew how dismayed their comments made her. I feel had Karen's solo been released in 1980 as it should have she would have had a solid hit album on her hands with a few bgi hit singles easily. The sound of these songs fit right in perfectly with what was happening on the music scene at that time. And you are right an artist needs to grow and change to keep things interesting.

Hi Heartwaves. I don't listen to too much music, isn't that a surprise? But I like Celine Dion, Josh Groban, The Doobie Brothers, Sandi Patty (Christian), Train, and certain select songs only in other catagories. Of course, I love the Carpenters, but find it hard to listen to her sometimes. My personal experience has led to some strangely mixed emotions there. I actually enjoy certain amorphic, new age, shapeless "music" which I can be neutral about. You see, having perfect pitch and the ability to "see" the songs in my mind, means that listening is often "work" and I cannot just "go with it" without analyzing it immediately. Strange, no? I recently discovered Gino Vanelli, and oh, my God, that man is a brilliant arranger as well as singer/songwriter. (He was known only for that one big hit "I Just Want To Stop" and who knew his depth!)

Hey Palma, Did you see the TV movie THE KAREN CARPENTER STORY on CBS on JAN 1, 1989, starring Cynthia Gibb, Mitchell Anderson and Louise Fletcher(as Mom Carpenter...ironically, on the Oct 1983 issue titled THE KAREN CARPENTER STORY by her Brother there is a story on the PEOPLE mag featured Louise Fletcher...who knew that 5 years later she would play Karen's mother...)...what are your thoughts on the movie, the acting, the story etc??

Want to share something interesting about writing in the Christian world. I never dreamed I would do that, but a few years ago, needed much comfort and encouragement myself, I attended a church where they sang very contemporary Christian songs. They would project the words on a screen, which seemed weird to me, a Roman Catholic, but as I participated, I found it easy to just follow the simple sequential melodies...they went where you THOUGHT they should go, not too sophisticated, and the reason was so you could think about praising God or feeling your feelings, instead of following an intricate melody. What was odd, too, was the songs had no second verses...they would just repeat the first verse. How unimaginative, I thought, but then I saw the sense in it. Again, familiarity, not too much thought, etc.

I like a little rock, pop, mellow, new age, alternative, Christian alternative rock, Chrisitan contemporary pop, country, etc.
I do listen to a good amount of music everyday. I love music too much to not listen daily. Though odd thing as much as I love Carpenters I listen to them maybe about once a week - sometimes less. But Karen is still my absolute favorite vocalist ever.

In answer to you Cameron, I remember being fascinated by seeing the story "acted" out, as though I was watching something too secretive, that could never have gone to the screen.I think I was always curious to hear the REAL TRUTH, and for whatever that film revealed, it was like a relief to see it acted out. It think I felt the family would never ALLOW such a thing to be on TV. I think there was the scene of her falling in the closet, and I always "see" that in my mind. How bizarre...getting dressed, everything normal, and you die in your closet. It made me think how ORDINARY our death can be. How in the middle of something so regular, you can just die. How shocking for her family.

I love Praise and Worship in a christian setting. But also for me, hearing Karen's voice on classics like Crescent Noon, ANother Song, Look To Your Dreams, Ave Maria, Now, Christ is Born, Little Altar Boy are songs that are like a religious experience to me. Palma, like you said, with a beautiful heaven sent voice, it can bring people to God. Draw them closer. Karen's voice def does that for me. The purity in her 4 octave range...the lowness, and the crystalline texture in her voice...one in a trillion...

Yes, I love Gino Vannelli, too.....he will be here in my city in concert this Janurary. I'm hoping to see him.....his songs really move me as he sings with such passion. And what a voice!
Doobie Brothers, Josh Groban.....love them too! Celine Dion....amazing voice......same with Sandi Patty. Never heard of Train. I can understand how you would hear music differently than the rest of us, I really do....being you are so involved in every aspect of the making of a song!
You yourself have such a beautiful voice, Palma! Your songwriting ability and your voice just amazes me..... what a blessing from God to have a gift that can not only touch our hearts, but also our spirits, also!

Hi Palma, Gino Vannelli has another great jazz-infused song called "Valleys of Valhalla" that you might enjoy as well. Aside from his very passionate, expressive singing, I really like the sizzling rhythm and riffs in that number! Another great song of his is "Living Inside Myself."

In briefly finishing my thought on the "simplicity" of Christian music, I was inspired to write in a more simple manner myself, as I tried very hard to resist intricate melodies. Song after song appeared and as I began to see the effect the words and music were having on people, I was very encouraged to continue this way. I DID, however, have second verses, I couldn't give THAT up, but I wrote melodies that could be more easily learned...I think! Tell me what you think when you hear that album, The Broken Cup, and if you think the fans might enjoy some of the songs, please offer them samples if you wish. I listen in my mind, and can hear Karen singing these songs, only a MAJOR THIRD lower than her "kid sister" ME.
