Hi O.E. To answer your questions... 1-does the log serve a useful purpose, either in inspiring members, or giving us documentation for the quite heavy airplay The Carpenters receive, in hopefully attracting more members? A. I don't think the log has attracted any new members... but it is fun to do and interesting to read. It has spurred me onto discovering new internet radio stations. I have also come to realize that Carpenters are being played quite a bit and it's not only the hit singles. Another very nice surprise is to find out just how popular Karen's solo album is on certain internet stations.2-are people willing to continue to take the time to keep record of their hears and report them for another year? A. Myself, I think doing this in 2008 is going to yield basically the same results. It doesn't seem necessary to do this a second year in a row.I agree that if we do a 2008 log that we should end at 12-31-07... but if we decide not to continue than we should go until 1-12-08 and have a complete year.

Thanks to everyone (Rick and WJ are the most frequent) for the reports. Regarding the cut-off day for the 2007 log: so far there hasn't been much interaction regarding a possible 2008 log. It really isn't much trouble keeping the log but the 2 main questions, I guess are: 1-does the log serve a useful purpose, either in inspiring members, or giving us documentation for the quite heavy airplay The Carpenters receive, in hopefully attracting more members? (I think the answer is yes, but the group should objectively consider the situation), and 2-are people willing to continue to take the time to keep record of their hears and report them for another year? If we decide to do a 2008 log, then yes, let's end the 2007 log of 12-31 and start on 1-1-08 with the new, but if we decide against a 2008 log, I would recommend we go with Rick's original idea of going until about Jan. 12, so that the 2007 log reflects an entire year. First, I want to express my thanks to you ,O.E., for keeping this log straight for all of us. I have found it quite interesting and a bit surprising. I didn't realize just how much air time the Carpenters still get. Of course, it seems to be mainly from the internet, although Rick seems to still hear a bit of Carpenters via regular radio. Lucky Rick. Secondly, I don't know what another year of logging would add. Perhaps if more people contributed to the log, plus maybe some international log entries, well that might spice things up some. I'm good with whatever decision we end up with.

Ulness there is specific interest shown by several members, I am now leaning toward not having a 2008 log as well. Like you all said, it has been shown that The Carpenters get a good amount of play (especially via internet) including a wide variety of material. The "champion" songs are probably about what would have been expected ("We've Only Just Begun", "Superstar", etc.), with songs such as "Sweet Sweet Smile" being played a lot also. It will be interesting to see if the Christmas songs can surpass the totals of the regular songs within the next 2 months.
I have been enjoying doing the log but it is getting a bit time consuming and if there is no 2008 log it will mean some avaialable time, hopefully some devoted to other aspects of The Avenue. And if between now and the end of the year there is momentum to do a 2008 log- fine. A log could always be begun in the middle of the year if the need for it becomes evident, also.

I must rephrase myself in my thoughts on this topic. I think this thread is a great idea and I have enjoyed it thoroughly. O.E. has shown a great commitment in keeping it going. I am completely thankful to you O.E. for the time you put into doing this. O.E. I really see this as your call. If you should decide to keep it going than I will participate in it and I'll enjoy it. Although, I may not listen to radio as much after the year ends. As it is I generally prefer not to listen to music while I'm on the computer... and that's about the only time I will actually listen to the radio... as when I'm in my car I prefer to have my CD's and play what I really want to hear while I'm on the road. I found an interest in internet radio after discovering WDUV... thanks to WJ7... I heard a few Carpenters songs there... I was very happy to hear them play "Solitaire"... that's one of my favorite songs to hear on the radio. From there I decided I wanted to find other stations that maybe play even more Carpenters or maybe play a wider variety of Carpenters music. Then I discovered tons of stations on the internet... and so the story goes. When I have music playing on my computer it does slow me up a bit as I get too much into the music. I'm already slowing up on the radio as it is right now and haven't played it in about two days. WJ7... yes I do hear several songs on regular radio... we have a radio playing in one of the office's at work... it switches from station to station... generally when it ends up on KEARTH I'll hear "Close To You" or "We've Only Just Begun"... it seems KEARTH doesn't going any further than "We've Only Just Begun" when it comes to Carpenters. When the radio ends up on KOST I can generally expect any number of Carpenters songs to be played including the two KEARTH play along with "Solitaire", "Only Yesterday", "Rainy Days And Mondays", "Superstar", "Goodbye To Love" - which is one of their favorites... and others from 1970 - 1975. Though in public I hear a good array of Carpenters. I will generally hear "We've Only Just Begun" in the public this is by far their most played song in public places... malls, restaraunt, Home Depot, the gym?, night clubs and other places. I've also heard "Those Good Old Dreams", "Superstar" (which is my second most heard in public places), "For All We Know", "I Won't Last A Day Without You", "Yesterday Once More", "Goodbye To Love" and several others. It could be Carpenters are so popular here in Orange County, California as they were a local group made it big for us in So Cal. The Carpenters came from my neighboring county. Many times in my trips to L.A. I would stop by the old A&M building just to look at it (I also enjoyed driving by the Capitol Records building also). There were times I'd stop and get out of my car and walk around the A&M building in hopes that maybe I would catch a glimpse of Karen. I wasn't star crazy or anything and I really wasn't even concerned as to whether or not I spoke with her... I just wanted to be able to actually see her. But that never happened... as the time period I was making regular visits to L.A. was from 1979 to about 1983... must I say more. On my way to L.A. a few times I took a stop into Downey to travel the sites... I never stopped in Downey just drove through... and that I think I only did twice... but the A&M building was many times as I happened to always be in that particular area when visiting L.A. Anyway back to the original thought. O.E. it's your call... I will be there to support you either way. Although, I do feel a 2008 log will bring basically the same results. Maybe we can move forward and put our energies into a new game or project... food for thought...

I'll probably wait a week (or two) before the next log update- by then we will probably be heavily into Christmas songs. I know what you mean about not listening to internet radio much while working as it does distract from tasks at hand (for me, at least.) Indeed thanks for the reference to WDUV, WJ- a great station. Regarding the 2008 log- thanks for the liberty given me by the moderators to log or not log next year, and a decision can wait until late December if need be. I am still very interested in hearing any more posts regarding opinions one way or the other; it is a project that relies 100% on group input, and the people who would be putting in the information should carry the weight of how things go. At this point so far, it seems like the idea of putting the log on hold for a year (perhaps) and working on some other things might be wise- but if there comes to be strong support for the log in 08- that's fine too.

O.E., Rick, and anyone else who has tuned into WDUV - I just wanted to say I'm happy that you have tuned in to the station and have enjoyed it as much as I have.
I'd also like to thank Rick and everyone who shares there sources to more Carpenters access.
It's great to have so many eyes and ears out discovering new things.

Hi O.E.,
Thanks for the fantastic job that you have been doing for the current and previous logs. The logs provide interesting indications about what influence the Carpenters have out there in current culture, which songs in particular still have mass appeal, and their relative magnitudes. (Otherwise, I may not have been attuned to such things as the use of their music in the movies for Nicolas Cage and "The Simpsons" this year!) Additionally, your creativity and talents as a game developer are very much appreciated on this forum. All your contributions are valuable, and we will support you however you may want to spend your time and efforts in the coming year.

Thank you for the update O.E. Please notate on the list that the hearing of "Make Believe It's Your First Time" is from Karen's solo album... as there are two recordings of the song and the one which was played by Radio Free A&M was Karen's wonderful solo version. Here's a list of my hears for the past seven days... This includes hears from about four different internet radio stations, two restaurants, one mall, one Home Depot and one regular radio station. Home For The Holidays - 2 We've Only Just Begun - 13 It's Going To Take Sometime - 1 Solitaire - 3 Making Love In The Afternoon (Karen solo) - 1 This Masquerade - 2 Only Yesterday - 1 Superstar - 2 Goodbye To Love - 3 Sweet Sweet Smile - 1 Rainy Days And Mondays- 2 If I Had You (Karen solo) - 1 Calling Occupants - 1

I am not as fortunate as most of you in hearing numerous Carpenters tunes but this weekend, while in the car, I heard two Carpenters Christmas songs and both were the same...."Merry Christmas, Darling".
Much to my surprise I did not not hear one while shopping in the malls but I know I will as Christmas draws nearer. I'll be in one again around December 8th so I'm hoping that will be another time to hear those great voices coming over the speakers.

I'm with you, Wisejester7 - I never thought this list would grow as it has - up to 20 pages within the year. Very cool. I haven't contributed much in the past few pages, as I've been listening mostly to CD's in my car - but when I walked into BestBuy on Friday, they were blasting Merry Christmas Darling throughout the store. Of course, I instantly began smiling, and my son thought it was cool that a song could make me react like that, and so quickly. It's a topic for discussion in another thread. Besides that one, I also heard Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, as I did flip the radio onto the FM all-Christmas music station.
