You hear the Carpenters in the most unlikely places... Earlier today, I went to the Harley shop to pick up a part I'd ordered. I was sitting at the parts counter, when the radio, tuned to 102.5 WDVE began playing "Close To You". What's so unusual about that, you say? WDVE is a "classic rock" station, and the C's just don't fit. Unbeknownst to your reporter, they are running a "Pay for Play" promotion for the Red Cross and hurricane relief. You pledge at least $25, and they'll play anything...within reason (no obscene stuff). Someone out there paid to hear the C's on DVE! The other parts guy, a large, bearded fellow (the quintessential biker!) said "I believe Paul Williams wrote that. He wrote most of their songs". The girls working there were just ecstatic at hearing this song. Then a dispute broke out over who sang the "59th Bridge Street" song! The song preceding the C's was Jimi Hendrix's "Star Spangled Banner" from Woodstock, the one after, Todd Rundgren's "We Gotta Get You A Woman". When I came home, I told my Karen about the song, and she said "You're a wazzo!" I put the disc on my CD player out in the driveway, and when she came out, we danced in the driveway. "Just go with the flow" I whispered in her ear, and she sang as we danced between my Sportster and my truck. Karen said that if she would request a song, it would've been Barry Manilow's "I Write The Songs". Anyway, they got me the wrong part, so I had to return it, and order the right one. But it certainly wasn't a wasted trip...especially when I got to dance with my wife. ???What a tremendous and wonderful way to drum up $ for the hurr. victims!! thanks for the info. and the great story. MY SOTD IS OUR DAY WILL COME ...it had been a while since I listened to the C's Now and Then cd...and seems OUR DAY ...just clicked into my head as so beautiful. Rick, I guess, just as you said how Dancin' in the Street and N. Orleans...gotcha..that's how I've been lately about Jambalaya.. Unfortunately, these songs have much more meaning to us now. ;D :-[Happy 1000th Dave! Hey nuthin' wrong w/ windbags! ha...justa kiddin...

My SOTD is I Can Dream Can't I. Being a great lover of ballads and loving older music so much, I just love this cover of this old 1930/1940 Big Band song. It is so wonderfully arranged and evokes all the nostalgia of that long ago era. Karen is at the epitome of her power and sings with an authenticity and understanding that is way beyond her life experience. This quality to Karen's voice is one of the reasons that she is one of the greatest artists of the 20th century.

My song of the day is "B'wana She No Home". What a great tune Michael Franks wrote. The musicianship on this song is outstanding. This song really moves. It's certainly one of my favorites from "Passage". "Passage" still ranks as one of my five favorite albums by the Carpenters.

My Carpenters song of the day is "Prime Time Love". This is one of those songs we don't talk about to often but it sure is a good one. It has a nice semi upbeat 80's sound to it. I really like this one quite a bit.

My song of the day is "Thank You For The Music". Today I was watching my DVD copy of Karen singing this song on the "Tonight Show" in 1978. What a good song excellently performed by Karen. Hearing this makes me yearn to one day hopefully hear the studio version which was recorded during the "Christmas Portrait" sessions.

My favorite song for today is If I Had You (1979). It has a faster pace than normal for Carpenter song. Hi Makapip! You and I are on the same wavelength today. My song of the day is also "If I Had You". What a great song. This is one of my three favorites of Karen's solo songs. Karen, Phil Ramone, Rod Temperton, Bob James and Billy Joel's band members really took this song and made it a masterpiece.
What's most outstanding to me is the vocal mix at the end of the song. Rod Temperton really went all out on this one. It's similar to some of the vocal mixes on Michael Jackson's "Thriller" album - which Rod Temperton also worked on.

My SOTD is You Baby Doesn't Love You Anymore I am generally more of a fan of young Karen but there is some later songs I really love and this one is among them. Richards arrangement with the trumpet reminds me of the early days which gives this great song a little nostagic feel for me, I love this song.

SOTD is "Maybe It's You". I've been listening to the "Close To You" album lately and I really do love this record. It's just such a good collection of music. "maybe It's You" is the one that always seems to get stuck in my mind. It stays with me. I just love the mellow mood of the song and Richard's beautiful keyboard parts. And best of all of course is Karen's wonderful voice. She truly proved herself with this song and all the songs from "Close To You".

My favorite song for today is Superstar (1971). Karen can reach a smooth low end and in few words back up again. Quite a feat for such a young singer. Richard did an excellent job blending all the music to match Karen singing.

My favorite song for today is Superstar (1971). Karen can reach a smooth low end and in few words back up again. Quite a feat for such a young singer. Richard did an excellent job blending all the music to match Karen singing. Yes, Karen had, as I call it, an otherworldly talent. It was magnificent how she could effortlessly soar from her highest range to her lowest all in one breath. and she did so very smooth. There just has never been anyone quite like her not then and not now.
My song of the day is "Honolulu City Lights". I was reading the lyrics to this song earlier today and the song is still in my mind.
