^^ Where Do I Go From Here? What else needs to be said. What a sad lyric...and ironically how wonderfully Karen sings it. It makes me ponder, every time I hear it, how personal those lyrics were to Karen. They must have been intensely personal, as that is how she makes them sound. There is "trial and tribulation" in her voice as she sings. It's deep, dark, and intimate. She reads it so, so well. ~Best, Tim

$% Hi all Dave, I can't tell you how many times I've sung Only Just Begun at weddings - and still do to this day. It has to be the most widely requested wedding song I've ever done, and I've been playing weddings for 38 years, now. Besides the Bridal Chorus and the Wedding March, Only Just Begun is the most requested tune, at least it has been from my perspective.
You mentioned the caption, and I couldn't agree with you more - "A Penny for Your Thoughts" would be perfect....and can we only imagine at this point in her life what she might be thinking. What a sweetie she was. Only wish we could ask her.
Song for the day - Love me for What I am....I love this song. Karen sang it with conviction, as she did many others. I have appreciated these lyrics a lot, as they are down to earth, tell it like it is true. And, as always, KC delivered them beautifully.
"....don't love me for what you intend or hope that I will be...." ~Best to you all!! Tim $% $? $%

Great choice for SOTD Tim I love that song as well as yours Roland everything from the Horizon period was great.
My SOTD is another early Karen solo record and may have been the B side to my previous one (APOTW) and this one is I'll Be Yours. I still liked Karens voice even if it was lacking in experience at the time and the Beatlesque sound especially on the piano. It is amazing how far the music evolved in such a short time as Richard and Karen (Don't know if Richard was present on these recordings) evolved their sound, almost like night and day.

the "song of the day" has reason why I see, diverse meanings. if the song had to be "cool"... then it would have to dress to me in fashion, to reduce about 5 years to him to my 29, to be a little stupider which I am, and not to have known the music of the carpenters brothers . the subject is most interesting and I will not reduce the opportunity of being able express my self. From Argentina, Buenos Aires, my name is francesco and I reunite many original vinyls from where these two brothers, smile to me without reason, all the nights. The interpretations that could consider like "songs of the day", I suppose must be moderate with certain cautious parameters. that song that extends to the time, is to my to understand song of the day, and for this, always characteristic similars :noble instrumentation. Beniamino Gigli interprets the "ave maría" like few, but its atenorate dye does not know to exactly solve the demands in low notes and the choire is strangly independent in the version of karen carpenter, is solved east problem (adding to this resolution, the extra contribution of a exquisitez in its unthinkable popular voice) the serious notes resonate like tombs, the acute ones explode unbelievely. but... the "ave Maria"is a song? gounod was in charge of the letter, johann sebastian bach played before with music. I have listened to two versions of this beauty: one in where the parsimonious masters of the young years of Richard rises perfectly towards the sky in arpegious scales; another one in where this adjustment arises a magnificent choir to four voices (is of Richard, if my is thus... oh god) those that yes could denominate "songs" as far as their structure, inmortals compositions that I consider as "songs of the day" is: 1 druscilla penny (great end: NOOO-ooo, skin of hen) 2 intermission (canon) 3 mr. guder (surprised ritmic and incredible surprise: PA-PA-pa-pa-pa/pa.ra.ra.pa.pa...) 4 crescent noon(full down resonates) 5 one love( composition perfumed in XVIII century )
in all these great compositions the perfume of inmortality is smelled. the time is a very small thing all these recordings share with equal property my room next to a siciliana of Giovanni Platti, one passacaglia of J. S. Bach, sonatas of Doménico by Landowska and opus the dramatic and unique opus 3 of A. Vivaldi.

Welcome Francesco to our forum...you have some intense and interesting thoughts! It's incredible to know that even all across the world..we can communicate..much quicker than regular mail...and probably less expensive.... anyway, I do love all the songs you mentioned...there aren't very many songs that I don't like by Richard and Karen...! I'm glad you're also a fan. My song of the day for today...maybe because I haven't listened to the Now and Then cd in a while...but I really like the song (even though maybe it could be titled something else because the title is VeRY MISLEADING... the song"I Can't Make Music".. It's a short song, but it's one that suits Karen very well not only her superb singing ...but it fits in to the lonely perhaps love lost songs she was known for. The way it starts out is a little unusual...the way she seems to just introduce the way she feels in a hurried way....and then sings it out she's trying to come up with a song ...and she's alone , hurt and scared (as the song goes) and then the listener realizes that she' s still in love with someone and the breakup has left her numb as far as trying to write a song. She always sings with such clarity and puts real emotion into it. ;D

Welcome to the forum Francesco. It's always nice to have someone from another country chat with us. Yes, Karen does a wonderful reading of "Ave Maria". And "Crescent Noon" brings out her deep dark side which we all love. Smoothie, my dear friend, I just love "I Can't Make Music" what an awesome song and Karen's voice just glows on this one. Enigma, I also love the early songs. The pre-Carpenters songs. I believe Richard played piano on the early Karen solo tracks. He also wrote the songs. I'm especially fond of "The Parting Of Our Ways". Beaner, you are a wonderful friend. Thank you for dedicating "Good Friends Are For Keeps" to us here at Carpenters Online. Tim, "We've Only Just Begun" is an awesome song. One day I hope to hear you perform the song. I'm sure you bring justice to it. And "Love Me For What I am" is a great song. I especially love the lyrics. These lyrics I relate to more so than any other Carpenters song. I really love the guitar parts in this song. Dave, excellent caption for the picture "a penny for your thoughts". Roland provided the pic that's up right now. Roland, thank you for the picture and the many pictures you've given us for wallpaper. The wallpaper board is one of the most popular sections on this forum. "Tryin' To Get The Feeling Again" is a terrific song. This song is so dynamic and vibrant. It would have fit so very well on "Horizon". I'm so glad that it was finally released after being lost for near 20 years. Makes one think of what other fabulous gems may be lost in the A&M vaults. And now for my "song of the day". I chose "I Believe You". I played the newest SACD release. I just love the excellent sound quality of this disc. It really sounds great. I got stuck on "I Believe You". I played it four times. The musical arrangement is outstanding. It's such a beautiful song. Karen's voice is as always excellent.

I'm so glad that it was finally released after being lost for near 20 years. Makes one think of what other fabulous gems may be lost in the A&M vaults. Reverting back to "Tryin' To Get The Feeling Again". I just love this song so. I love Karen's dark, deep, rich, and full vocal on it. She really sings with every ounce of soul and conviction here. 1975 (the "Horizon" era) was certainly her strongest period vocally. I love the original "bloodhound" lyric. This adds to the mystique of the song. Another interesting thought on TTGTFA. Sometimes I want to think of this song as a cover (or remake). But really the Carpenters recorded the song first in 1975. Barry Manilow did his recording one year later in 1976. Although Manilow did a decent recording (I'm not necessarily a Manilow fan) I think Carpenters recording far exceeds his. Than again I am biased. Another interestiong factor is that TTGTFA was recorded in the session with "Only Yesterday". And we all know OY is the Carpenters most loved song (anyway by most of the diehard fans). So without further ado I guess I will say that for Saturday January 22nd "Tryin' To Get The Feeling Again" is my song of the day.

the Carpenters recorded the song first in 1975. Barry Manilow did his recording one year later in 1976. Barry Manilow recorded the song in 1975. The released date, I have, for the album *Tryin' To Get The Feeling Again* is October 1975.
The Carpenters recorded the song in January 1975.
I wonder from what recording(s) The Carpenters and Barry Manilow got their idea to record their versions.

Both Barry Manilow and Carpenters must have been sent the song at around the same time. Most likely Carpenters received the song first as they were already a major name in 1975. I remember reading in the Ray Coleman book that Carpenters would receive several stacks of songs to consider from various publishing companies. That's how they came upon "Rainy Days And Mondays" and "Let Me Be The One". Nevertheless I just love "Tryin' To Get The Feeling Again" what a wonderfully bold and dynamic performance. It's one of my most favorite by the Carpenters.

???thanks Rick for the interesting info. about Tr. To G. The Feeling..I never had heard the C's version until not that long ago...when I first heard their version, it took me a while to appreciate it since I was so used to the Manilow version...and I didn't know that the "bloodhound" line was part of the original song. I really like that part too. I really love all of it now. I love We've Only J. Begun...just the few first notes of the flute and you know what it is (if you're really a C's fan).I wish I would have thought to have that sung at my own wedding...anyway, I'm glad people still know about it and use it . Dave, you give me a chuckle when you say you would be watching Youn Frankenstein...is that the oldie, or the one with Gene Wilder? YOU FrIeND ARE Quite A CharAcTer ( a good one)! Thank you Rick also for being such a friend..and everybody else too. MY SONG OF THE DAY would be "I Believe You"...it keeps rolling around in my head. Karen did believe in herself, and in others. And my thought on the current wallpaper here on the site, a Penney for your thoughts...is very good. I also think I Can Dream Can't I?"

It sounded awkward. But yes, thank you Roland for the extra added information on "Trying To Get The Feeling Again". Sounds like C's recorded it only about four or five months before Manilow. And eventhough Carpenters recorded it first I still want to call it a cover of Manilow's song only because C's version was never released until 1995.

$% Over and over today, I keep singing "All I Can Do" - what a wonderful introduction song by Carpenters...I mean, I love that Harmony, and the time signatures are so fun. The rich harmonies just flow so smoothly, and Karen does a great read of this earlier tune. ~Best to you all Tim
