Thanks for this chance to "time-travel", Rick! Very interesting and enlightening! Would you believe it's impossible to get "Passage" here in the back of woods of Europe. I searched, Amazon (USA) seems to be the only way to get it!!!

"Passage" was released in late September 1977. I was absolutely ecstatic when I first heard it as finally the Carpenters had an upbeat and modern new sound... just what I had wished for after the somewhat run of the mill "A Kind Of Hush" album. I was so excited for days before the "Passage" interview was played on the radio. I made sure to be home for it. I was just a young 17 year old teenager... who predominantly loved male vocal lead hard rock (such as Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, Doors, Pink Floyd, Aerosmith and others), but Karen Carpenter's voice was the exception. I loved (and still love) Karen Carpenter. Her voice is like a crystal dream. Anyhow, I made sure to purchase some cassette tapes just so I could record the interview, which I recorded on a small portable tape recorder. It was just an inexpensive tape recorder so that's why the sound level is somewhat low and the quality is not the best. You can hear all sorts of extra surface noise. While I was recording the interview during some of the songs I did turn the recorder off, in order to get the entire interview on one side of the tape, as it was a 90 minute tape, with 45 minutes on one side. That's why some of the songs are cut off and don't play all the way through. Looking back, now, I wish I would have just recorded everything without interruption... but when I was a kid in 1977 I never dreamed I would have this web site that would reach thousands of people and the last thing I ever thought is that I would be sharing this tape recorded interview with others. I pretty much was just recording it for myself. That's the way it happened back in 1977. I am very happy that you have enjoyed the interview. i have several other treasures which I will be sharing throughout the year.

AHH...YES, THOSE WONDERFUL TAPE RECORDERS AND TAPES...ACTUALLY, THOUGH THANKS FOR GETTING THE INTERVIEW SOUNDS GREAT TO ME! IN 1977, I RECALL HEARING "OCCUPANTS" ON THE RADIO, AND NOT REALLY CARING FOR IT, SINCE IT WAS SO DIFFERENT, BUT I LOVED SW. SW. SMILE ALWAYS! IT'S SUCH A SPECIAL TREAT FOR US RICK TO HEAR R. AND K. ONCE AGAIN.... I HAVE ONLY A TAPE CASSETTE OF PASSAGE, BUT GLAD TO HAVE IT. I APPRECIATE IT MORE HEARING THE INTERVIEW...THANKS AGAIN!

I wonder if there are region restrictions. Please email me at kandronline@yahoo.com and I will try and get the interview to you one way or another. I actually will not be at my email box until later on today so won't here from me for a few hours. * * *

Thanks so much for posting that! I love how Karen got to have the ever-elegant Cary Grant as her "escort..." (who cares if he was older then? *swoon!*)
