^^ Rick, this is a wonderful topic. Problem is, I fluctuate. One reason I have been able to so completely dissolve into Carpenters music is because of the relationship I have with the song(s). So many points in my life have I completely related to songs Karen sang. A Song For You - how many times was I on a stage singing, and had this same feeling? Rode Ode - oh yes, wanting to get off the road and get back home - Top of The World - when my children were born, when I got the job I wanted. So, for clarification - are we going to stick with the "now" portion of our lives, and pick songs that describe the person we have become? Or the person we were to get to this point, or..? Excellent idea for a thread. Where on earth do you come up with these topics? Just excellent. Thanks. *%

??# ??# ??# Hi tim! Hi All! To better define this topic how about it being the songs which relate most to the person you are in the present. Songs which define your personality type. Such as a romantic person may relate to the song "Close to You". a zany oddball person may best be described by the song "Goofus".

Okay all I ended up being a whole lot more detailed with this than I thought I would be. It's pretty revealing in some parts. But these songs really tell the story as to who I am as a person. Hope you enjoy. "Sing" - I relate to this song in that I keep a strong positive outlook on the person I am. I'm the type who always makes sure my voice (viewpoint) is heard. "Don't worry that it's not good enough for anyone else to hear just sing" "Sing, sing a song. Sing out loud. Sing out strong."Top Of The World" - When I walk outside (whether it's a sunny day or rainy day) I always make a point of looking at the world around me. I look at the beauty and wonder of the sky above. I look at the tree, the grass, the shrubbery, the flowers. I listen to the sounds of children playing and people laughing. I thrive on this and it puts me on top of the world. "All I Can Do" - I relate to this song more for it's quirky musicianship than the lyrics. The off-beat timing of this song reminds me of my off-beat personality. "Love Me For What I Am" - The title says it all. I am who I am. I can't be anybody other than who I am. My friends, family and loved ones just have to love me for the person I am and vice versa. I love my loved just exactly for the people that they are. I believe strongly in this attitude. "Boat To Sail" - This song appeals to my creative and artsy side. "B'wana She No Home" - There are many reasons as to why I relate to this song. First I relate to this music style well. This is a style I love tremendously. Musicianship wise I consider this song to be one of the Carpenters' very best and strongest songs. It's adventurous and proves the Carpenters were far beyond their peers of the day and more than just an average pop or easy listening group. I really enjoy Tony Peluso's driving electric guitar chords. The saxophone, flute and congas really spice things up. As for relating to my psyche "B'wana She No Home" is so very "me". When I am home I enjoy my relaxation and privacy. I never answer the front door unless I'm expecting company and always screen all my phone calls. "I just want you to try and remember one thing. If somebody knocks or the telephone rings. Say B'wana she (he) no home". In "B'wana..." Karen is giving her servant precise and direct orders. I am this way on my job. I do not have servants but I do have 23 people who work under my direction. In all projects I work on I am very direct and precise about what needs to be accomplished, how it should be done and when it should be completed. "He Came Here For Me" - I love this song for many reasons. Though I relate to it because of the lyrics. I love Jesus and keep Him in my heart. "Savior. Son of God, I praise thee Jesus""Bless The Beasts And Children" - I love children and animals. Even though I am terribly allergic to all furry creatures I still love them. When I see a sad or impoverished child it brings tears to my eyes and tugs at my heart. sometimes I wish I had the cure for the sadness and poverty of the world. "My Body Keeps Changing My Mind" - I relate to this song for it's overall feel. This song has an upbeat and fun feel about it. I feel that I'm an upbeat and fun person. I love to laugh and enjoy myself when I'm out with friends. In social situations or even in training/learning classes I generally create a light and enjoyable atmosphere by saying something funny. "Good Friends Are For Keeps" - I am very loyal to my family and friends. A friend of mine once described me by saying; "Once you're friends with Rick, you've got a friend for life".

This is easy. I've answered this question before but here goes again,
Goofus - this song's subtext basically is how I feel about myself and how I felt while especially in high school. I've just never been like everyone else in my age group and I've always done things my way and I am sure everyone else thought I was goofus because of my preferences, ways, etc!
Solitaire - an off-shoot from being "Goofus". The song says it all.
I Need To Be in Love - well, the song basically says it all.
I'll Say Goodbye to Love - that's how I feel when I'm now 28 and single!

??# ??# ??# ??# Without A Song –Don’t know what I’d do without a song in my life – especially a Carpenter song. Music is such an integral part of my life and, “when days go wrong, a man ain’t got a friend, without a song.” I Got Rhythm – “I got rhythm..I got music..I got my gal, who could ask for anything more?” I’m a homebody who enjoys quiet times at home with either good music, or a good movie, and surrounded by those I love. I’m also so grateful for the gift of being able to sing and play – I can melt all my troubles away anytime with music! This Masquerade – This is my all time favorite Carpenter tune, and I have associated with it from the first time I heard it. I am fortunate in that I have a lovely wife I have been married to for almost 30 years, now – however, we all have “masquerades” in our lives. I am no exception. “..and no matter how hard I try to understand the reason why we carry on this way – we’re lost in this masquerade..” Leave Yesterday Behind – This is the philosophy I try and live by day-to-day. I used to let the past “drag me down”, but now, I “..just find a way to Leave Yesterday Behind…” I Can Dream, Can’t I? – If there is one thing I can always do, it’s dream. Dreaming is a positive thing to do – and can result in seriously positive, happy outcomes. I try to be positive, and happy. Happy – “..is the way I’m feelin’ and it’s all because of bein’ with you..” Wow – what a great sentiment. Happy is what life is all about. It puts me on .. ;D ;D ;D ;D Top of the World - “..there is wonder in most everything I see..” God is significant in my life, and there truly IS wonder in everything He has created. Sitting on Top Of The World is easy with God in my heart. Good Friends Are Forever – I have been blessed with many friends. I, too, am fiercly steadfast when it comes to friendships – once a friend, always a friend. And, my friendships are important priorities in my life. “..good friends are for KEEPS..” Still Crazy After All These Years – That would be me – a wild and crazy sort of guy. I love to have fun, and be the class clown – I have a passion for living, and a flair for the dramatic. I go to extremes and I know it – and if I stand or I fall – it’s all or nothing at all. Crazy. Let Me Be The One – this goes back to those friendships I spoke of..I hope I can be there for those in need – my friends, my family, my co-workers. I like it when I can be “the one to turn to”. ??# Yesterday Once More – I have always identified with this song, because “..every sha-la-la-la, every woo-oo-woo-oo still shines. Though I have learned to put the “unhappy” past behind me, I can look back on the “happy times” as memories are like treasures to me. $% I Won’t Last a Day Without You – again, goes back to those relationships that are so dear to me. “I can take ALL the madness the world has to give – but I won’t last a day without “you.” $&? $&? A Song For You – is such a strong musical and lyrical number for me, having lived the life I have – as a musician, as a business man – as a husband, father, son, brother, friend. “And when my life is over, remember when we were together – we were alone, and I was singing this song for YOU.” $V$

Beautiful Beth! I see you and I have some of the same songs "He Came Here For Me", "Good Friends Are For Keeps", and "Love Me For What I Am". I think "Love Me For What I Am" holds a very important message which we can all learn from. I really like your description of why you feel "Goofus" relates to you in your life. although I didn't use "Goofus" in my list. It still relates to me also.

Three songs I could think of:
"I Won't Last A Day Without You" is a song I could relate to. The world gives me a hell of a lot of madness I will say. This was a song that calmed me down one day as I was driving home from work after finding out how a co-worker squealed on me and said some terrible things about me. I was so angry at her that I wanted to go way overboard...this song and the whole Gold album kept me from wanting to go insane and get locked up in the crackerbox.
"Stength Of A Woman"- is a great song from the MIA album. It was like a mirror of my soul. Knowing that I am a woman and a very strong one, despite being born male, weak and self-destructive. The female soul is my true being, as my male self was all a big lie that the rest of the world wanted me to be. I just say, @@@@ the world.
"Those Good Ole' Dreams"- is one of my absolute favorites, one of the other songs I learned how to play. As a child I was known for make believing. Pockets of my past have been spent in make believe life. When I was eight, my best friend and I made up this make-believe city where everything was perfect. When I was probably younger, I imagined being a female child. Then, when I was 13, after being sparked by a few episodes of the show "Small Wonder", I began cross-dressing. And yes, one by one they seem they're coming true. The dreams of wanting to become a woman came true. Especially a lesbian one.
In recent months, I actually moved into the city limits of Las Vegas. For many years before, I dreamed of living here. But over a five year period, I attempted to, but only now succeeded. "

?* ;)There seems to be a Carps. song somewhere that fits just about every mood or situation that we all see ourselves in. I love the way each of you has related how you connect with each song. ???I think overall, I'm afraid I feel like I relate more to songs that are not as upbeat, although I strive not to be "hangin' around, some lonely clown" ....I connect up with the sadder songs. I feel lost in "This Masquerade". But I know we all feel that way some. I love "Only Yest."....it picks me up and is just an overall wonderful song. Even though most of the C's songs have to do with romantic relationships, of which I've had in the past , but not now.....this song makes me think of how great it did feel to love someone like that...and many times, just to sing along with this kind of song...love life or not,...is fun. As Tim mentioned, "Without a song" is a real biggie with me even though, I don't play any instrument. I have to have some music each day... "the day would truly never end without a song".. Basically, people see me as easy going "I have always been a dreamer"... People see me I think as someone they can easily talk to. I still am thinking of other things or songs I might add on later.

For me, I adore, and relate to their sad songs... A PLACE TO HIDEAWAY...one of my all time favorites. During my childhood, and teen years, I was being physically and emotionally tortured/abused. I won't get into details, and as a teen, at 16, I found an outlet to the pain I was feeling...anorexia nervosa, and later, bulimia...this song spoke to me about wanting to find a place to hideaway..."I've got to find a place to hideaway, far from the shadows of my mind, sunlight and laughter, love ever after, oh how I long to find a place to hideaway...bright colored pin wheels go round in my mind, I run thru the mist of the wine, but night and the music remind me instead, the world once was mine...I'll save my pennies for a rainy day, but where can I find another you..." That lyric, I could so relate to...also, although I am not a huge fan of it at all...GOODBYE TO LOVE was one of the first Carpenters song that I related to..."I'll say goodbye to love, no one ever cared if I should live or die" which also was when I was home, at age 16... I adore SOLITAIRE as everyone must know...I love the depressing tone of the song, the sadness... I also love ONLY YESTERDAY...the low, opening notes. For many, many years that was my THEME to my life..."After long enough of being alone, everyone must face their share of loneliness, in my own time no body knew the pain I was going thru..." etc... CRESCENT NOON...gorgeous song. I could feel the extreme melancholy in this song, mirroring my soul... WHEN IT'S GONE is another wonderul depressing song...very similar to SOLITAIRE... ONE MORE TIME...a sad song that I loved...and listened to over and over again. My thoughts, Cameron PS. I am a very happy person. I lived a sad life, but have overcome a lot of obstacles and now, I look toward the future...with hope.

I know that as opinionated as I am I can come off as not caring. But believe me I do care. And I always only hope the best for all people. I've always believed it's better to be direct then to sugarcoat things. I've always had this slight bit of rebel in me. Sorry for rambling on. But this thread does tend to make one open up.

Hi You Guys!! Thanks so much for the encouragement. How wonderful!! Yes, my heart does go out to those who have suffered too. How sad that in this world, people can treat others with cruelty and indifference...And yes, we've only just begun...to be a family... My thoughts, Cam
