This is the second version of this story that I submitted. I thought I'd lost the first version before it was sent, but it made it here (I've since deleted it) so I started over with this version. I've included the original at the end of this second version.
I'm the fellow who reported the Cheesy story the other day.
I had a positive radio encounter with the Carpenters today.
I was just getting out of my car to go to lunch when I somehow landed on AM 600 out of Memphis, Tennessee. This is unusual because Memphis is 200 miles away from where I live.
Reception was poor but I could hear Karen in all her glory singing Merry Christmas Darling. I knew this station is 'All Talk All the Time' so I couldn't understand why they were playing Karen for such a long time. I figured this must be leading into another show (which it was) but it kept playing for quite a while.
Finally the moderator came on and sort of appologized by explaining he loves Karen's voice so much he couldn't turn the music off any sooner. He then went on to explain Karen's story including detailed information about her musical talents and her illness. He also said what a terrible loss Karen's early death was to this world. It was very nice.
Then the show went on about something totally unrelated. I turned it off at this point but wondered if listeners might call in with other Carpenter related info or questions.
Perhaps someone here will determine whether AM 600 out of Memphis keeps archives of all their programs. This one ran at noon on Saturday, December 18, 2004.
I'm glad I got to hear this and report it to you.

The original:
Well as if to balance things out (I submitted the Cheesy story) I turned my car radio on today around noon here in Little Rock, Arkansas, US, to find Merry Christmas Darling playing.
What caught my attention is that the station playing Karen and Richard is an all talk format station located some 200 miles away in Memphis, Tennessee. I figured that some talk show was using Karen's beautful voice to come back from the news. So I kept listening and listening and listening and she kept singing.
Turns out it was a talk show and the moderator of the show appologized for the delay in starting the show but he loves Karen's voice so much he just wanted to keep listening.
He then went on to tell Karen's story including her musical talents including voice, drums, and guitar (I'd forgotten she played the guitar if true.) He then went on to describe her illness and how she brought so much attention to that illness. He then stated what a terrible loss her talent was to the world.
And then the show began about something totallly different. Reception was poor so I stopped listening at this point, but I wondered if others would call to talk about Karen.
The station is AM 600 out of Memphis in case someone wants to research whether they keep archives of their shows.
I was just getting out of the car when I happened on this so it was one of those 1 in a million shots. Reception from that far away in the middle of the day normally would not be good.
