Who watched the Carpenters on TV back in their heyday. I remember the first time I saw them Karen was sitting at the drums singing Superstar. My mother told me a few days earlier that they would be on. I couldn't wait...and finally the night comes. I wish I had a video tape recorder back then. I can remember watching each and every special of theirs.
That makes me wonder...Does anyone know if (and hopefully when) we can see them on TV any time soon?
I hope everyone has a Carpenters' day.

;Dhey there carp1ncmor...you really do have a very good memory.....I don't recall too much of those shows...just here and there ...I do recall their Christmas special...maybe their first special ...the part I recall is Karen looking very healthy and beautiful in that furry long winter coat with the hand muff singing "Merry Christmas Darling". I recall how Richard liked to dress up in big plaid and act like Spike Jones making fun of I think"Close to You" on that piano. He always seemed so intense and serious compared to Karen, and so though that was goofy I liked seeing him liking to do that segment. I recall on one of their tv shows, must have been one of their last ones, and Karen was skeletal and looked like she wore a wig, and she sang some of "Close to You"...but she sang it in a way that at the time I thought ...voice is still good, but she doesn't look well, and that spark and enthusiasm she once had wasn't there. She clearly was very tired. In any case, they always had a fun show it seemed. No, I don't know when their bio. will be on ...I know as recently as last wk. E! channel had a program about Karen. I was told this by Beth, one of our forum friends here. I unfortunately didn't know exactly when it was going to be on and didn't see it.

The first time I saw the Carpenters on TV, this is a tough one - as I was only ten years old in 1970. I remember watching the 1971 Tv progam "Make Your Own Kind Of Music". I vaguely remember richard playing superman, I think I remember them singing "Superstar". The next memory I have of them on TV was the 1973 or 74 American Music Awards - they won best group. The next year they were on the Grammy Awards presenting an award. Of course there were all the TV Specials - I watched every one of them and one by one I'm purchasing them from Ebay. Unfortunately the copies I bought from Ebay are somewhat blurry - the picutre quality at best is fair. I hope one day Richard releases all the specials so we can have good clear pictures.
As for Carpenters on TV, VH1 will be airing "The 100 Most Shocking Moments In Rock and Roll", Karen is featured in this and will be on October 25. Also the True network is airing the Karen Carpenter Story on November 8, 15, 19, 20 and 25th.

I do know that Richard does not ever intend to release "Make Your Own Kind of Music" on DVD cause he said it would take too much time involving fees, etc.
He also stated that he did not care for the show anyway.
As for it being released on TV as a rerun, I don't know if it is as costly to do this then make a DVD but would love to see it happen.
I understand about all that it takes to do something like this but as for the show, I loved EVERYTHING I saw the Carpenters in. I would have given anything to be able to tape all that I saw back then but like you said, Rick, no video tape recorder.

Thanks, Rick, for the info on the TV shows with Karen and Richard; I look forward to seeing them. I know Richard has no plans on releasing any of his shows on DVD, yet it would be nice if he would allow the networks show them. What a thrill!
Rick, you must be a year younger than I am. I eat and breathed the Carpenters. We owned an old record player stereo cabinet where I use to sit on and act like I was singing to the music. I would stay in more bedroom all evening long listening to their records. I remember my mother finally telling me to turn it off and go to bed on an almost nightly basis, especially in the winter time. I played softball in the summer months, so I didn't have the opportunity to chill out with the Carpenters as much then.
Until next time. Hope everyone has a Carpenters' day!

Hey Carp1mcor. Dave is going to yell at me for pushing non Richard endorsed products but I saw a copy of Music Music Music at www.gemmvideos.com for 30$ and Ebay has Make Your Own Kind Of Music listed from time to time. I think Roland is the one with a good connection to all of the television specials. As much as I love the Carpenters I can just vaguely remember MMM. Oh and one more thing gemmvideo has a lot of BBC and Japan Carpenters specials for sale. JIM

Great memories from all on this topic ....recall Carpenters 1st BBC TV Special in 1971 ....wonderful performances / playing from Karen & Richard plus group members Later other BBC Specials plus some selected USA appearances such as Andy Williams Show, Bob Hope Specials ....were shown in UK ....but never enough given Carpenters status & ongoing success Later in 1990;'s there were TV Specials tapes played at several UK conventions ....great to see Carpenters music performances once more ..... Hey Dave. Thanks for not yelling at me but Richard did call me and yelled at me for buying More Offerings. He said I was a basket case. I know that Richard has said in past interviews that the royalty factor is the main reason for not releasing any television specials. I don't understand how all of this royalty stuff works but given the fact that most of the TV specials are over 30yrs old, I am guessing that most of the guests stars are not exactly in the lime light of the entertainment world any longer. So it just seems to me that these guests would over look the royalty issue in favor of the promotions that the release of these specials would bring to there careers. Just a thought. JIM

I wish Richard would release their TV specials on DVD. Good sound and great picture! I haven't seen the specials since they aired, but would buy them in a heartbeat. The only other time I saw the Carpenters on TV was an appearance in 78 on the Tonight show when they sang "Thank you for the music." I was maybe 10, but really enjoyed getting to stay up and see them. I happened to stumble on an old Ed Sullivan show in which Karen and Richard were some of the guests. This was a few years back, but it was great to see. They sang shortened versions of Close to You and We've only Just Begun.
