just a thought...I listened to the Singles 69-73 LP as I was dusting my room the other day. It had really been a long time since I had listened to it. I just wanted to say how very beautiful the instrumental "medley" at the start of it is. I really had forgotten that beginning. Not to say I don't enjoy the whole record, of course, but it really struck me...you all know that certain nerve in your soul that also causes that lump of emotion to slide up your throat...ha.. what timeless and wonderful music...! I guess I shouldn't have started a thread really about that since, before long the review of the whole album will be coming up ...but, I just wanted to say that...

I also enjoy the the way the Superstar/Rainy Days/Goodbye to Love medley are combined with Karen re-recording the last word "down" from Rainy Days and the music leading to Goodbye to Love. I prefer the original way they recorded Rainy Days, but it is nice when they did something else for the Singles album. I had forgotten about the Singles and some of its uniqueness. Thanks for the memories, Smoothie! I not only have it on the old album form, I bought it on CD before it was discontinued. I think I will pull it out and listen!

I agree the different mixes on this record give it an identity its own. It still sounds good after all this time I feel this is their best compilation and compliments the original releases I too dusted this one off to listen to again.

Singles 1969-1973 is still the original and best compilation ....probably due to Karen & Richard re-recoding / reworking several Singles and adding more for fans obtaining this release Great shame that this set is unavailable except in Japan ....A&M & Richard should have kept this remastered version out on release ....as fans replaced vinyl / obtained CD version ....sales in USA would have probably topped 10 Million and earned Carpenters an overdue RIAA Diamond award .... Peter I think the Richard/Universal thinking was that the Singles 69-81 would replace the Singles 69-73. They didn't want the two compilations competing with each other. Right or wrong I believe this is the reason they proceeded the way they did.

This was my first Carpenters album, and I have played it so much. This album has forever linked the songs Superstar, Rainy Days and Goodbye To Love together, and I now feel that these 3 belong together. And on most compilations they are usually together (although as separate tracks) The few times I see a compilation and they are not togehter, I think it`s weird. These 3 songs are ment to be together I think, they are a magical trio.

I think the CLOSE TO YOU intro segueing into WE'VE ONLY JUST BEGUN is lovely. No two ways about it. Pure perfection. I actually wish they had done more albums like this, one song connecting to another, creating different moods. I think the above mentionned songs sound gorgeous, but also, very sad, almost melancholy.

I agree. Karen always managed to mix melancholy into happy subjects and conversely mix hope into very sad songs. What a dichotomy. Our Karen was an incredible artist!

I know that Richard really added to the beginning intro of CLOSE TO YOU with WE'VE ONLY JUST BEGUN...creating some nice, gorgeous images as only he can, instrumentally speaking. He was very talented in that regard. I think that is the reason why I love TIME, HEATHER, and some other instrumental like songs.

@@ Truly, R. and K. really created a great album. I wonder if he's still able to play like he used to. In any case, the beginning of the 69-73 singles, instrumental medley is so very beautiful. I agree that there should have been more albums to start off that way. Even though I do like the reprisals featured on other albums.

Cameron I really enjoy the "we've Only Just Begun" intro to "close To you" on "Singles 1969-1973". Everytime I listen to this I get that "chill" factor. It is such a classic opening. I've listened to this album thousands of times and I never tire of it. It's a truly amazing compilation. It's still my favorite of all their compilations.
