One song that has always made me think of Karen is "That Girl Could Sing", a 1980 top 30 hit for Jackson Browne. I remember before I even heard the song, just the title alone made me think Karen Carpenter.

Hi All, Another song I could think of is...IF I WANT TO by Sandi Patty. This song was produced by Phil Ramone. Her phrasing is very similar to Karen on this track. ANother song by Sandi Patty is FOREST OF FEARS which reminds me of Karen as well.

There's a song I have on a very old album by Nancy Sinatra and on it is a song called "Little Bird" and I think of Karen singing that a lot.

With a few exceptions such as the power vocal songs any song I hear by a female artist at this point makes me think "you know Karen could have sang that" Ones that especially make me think of Karen are any Ann Murrey song because she had a simular vocal range to Karen. One specific song that comes to mind was mentioned by me in another post and was by Gloria Esefan(sp) called The Words Get In The Way. I remember when I heard this beautiful song with a beautiful voice to match immediately thinking of Karen Carpenter. To this day Gloria is my runner up to Karen as a vocalist with a beautiful voice.

I agree enigma, Gloria Estefan can sound startingly like Karen. She has a wonderful voice. Ultimately, no body really comes close to our Karen. It goes beyond words.

A song by Klaatu called "A Routine Day". The last line of the song says "and I'm waiting on the pier til Karen comes". This makes me think of Karen when I hear that line.

Hey Boats, I love that song "A Routine Day" - gee didn't I burn Klaatu to disc for you? Glad you like them. That end part makes me think of Karen too, especially since Karen sang the Klaatu song "Calling Occupants..." as a matter of fact Klaatu recorded "A Routine Day" two years after Carpenters did "Calling Occupants".

Hi All, Ginette Reno(a famous Quebecois singer...ou chanteuse) and Charlotte Church each, seperately, recorded the AVE MARIA song, and it's neither the Bach or Schubert version. I could just hear Karen singing this song for the holidays. GORGEOUS song!!

Hey Enigma. I totally agree. Gloria and Karen share that low range resonance quality. Another Gloria song is IT CUTS BOTH WAYS that makes me think of Karen. From what everyone has said I need to check out Klaatu. Are any of you framiliar with Carol Bayer Sagers Album SOMETIMES LATE AT NIGHT? It was produced back in 79 or 80 by Burt Bacharach while they were married. It is very unique in the way it was arranged. It begins with a prologue which segways into the rest of the songs on the album which continue to follow each other with the segway format ending with a reprise. So the album is seamless. At the time it was released it was only available on vynil and cassette, So the seamless quality was lost when it was time to flip the album or you heard the clickng of auto reverse. The album was out of print for 20yrs until it was released on CD a few years ago allowing for seamless quality of the album to be fully appreciated. Please bare with me. Carols voice is no match for the perfection of Karen but the duets with Burt are very moving. The song that moves me to tears is You and Me(We Wanted It All) You can tell they were in love while it was produced the emotions in there vocals are incredible. I hope this album is still around, it is deffinetely worth checking out. Anyone who loves the Carpenters will love this Bacharach masterpiece. This post is also available in paperback. LOL

Shania Twain's "home ain't where his heart is anymore" sounds so much like Karen's phrasing that I wondered if Shania did it intentionally. From the first time I've heard it, it reminded me of Karen.

Oh definately Moe, she sounds so much like Karen. Well Shania has publicly stated she has been a huge Karen fan. I always think they would have gotten along fabulously had Karen lived.

Ten years ago, at the Church of Religious Science, I knew a couple who sang there every sunday, I think their names were the Coopers. They sounded just like K and R I swear. I even told them that personally and they took it as a wonderful compliment. Though Lloyd (Mr. Cooper) told me that his favorite music was classical and the Beatles, he did like the Carps.
As for any one song, I can't think of one. To me, Karen was one of a kind.

???I'll have to check in on these other singers. Shania when she sings "You're still the One...still the one I kiss good night...still the one I love..." and for some reason when I first heard "Kiss Me" by the group Sixpence None the Richer. The girl singing that could probably do a good job going solo. She has a clear fresh (fresh?..) quality to her voice I like.

Hi Smoothie. I have one of Sixpence None The Richer's earliest CD's. They started out as a contemporary Christian group which then became popular, I believe first with the song "There She Goes" (boy could you imagine Karen singing "There She Goes"). Anyway the lead vocalists name is Leigh Nash, her husband Mark Nash is a member of one of the best Christian rock groups ever named PFR. They've been around since around 1992.

???thanks Rick for the info. now I remember you had talked about them before ...I like There she goes too... Kiss Me..Leigh's voice on that one and or the song itself...the first time I heard it, I thought oh my...such a song sung that way reminded me of some type of 50's song...catchy...simple...like Doris Day...or I don't know who...she has a unique voice.

A few summers ago, the British boy/girl band S Club 7 had a hit song, "Never Had a Dream Come True." When I heard it, I thought, "That sounds like a Carpenters song, if the Carpenters were recording today." It's a melodic romantic ballad, and the girl who sings lead has a Karen-esque tone to her vocals, though she is nowhere near as good as Karen. And the rest of the group backs her up with harmonies that sound very Carpenterish.
Not long after this song was popular, there was a rumor on the internet that the girl who sings the lead, Jo Omera, was going to record a solo album, which would be produced by ... Richard Carpenter! I thought that Richard must have heard the song, and had the same reaction that I did. But unfortunately, the rumor was apparently untrue, because no album was ever recorded.
