This is part one in a series I am attempting to do. I am going to try and contact artists and or songwriters of songs Carpenters covered to get their input on what they thought about C's recording their song(s) and how it changed their lives.
The first is from Dee Long from the group Klaatu. In 1977 Carpenters covered the Klaatu song "Calling Occupants Of Interplanetary Craft" which was a moderate hit in the U.S., but a huge hit in other parts of the world.
The following is an email I received from Dee Long:
Hello Rick! I've always been a bit of a "Carpenters" fan.
I may not be the one to answer these questions though, that song was written by Terry Draper and John Woloschuck, the other two Klaatu band members. It also made more money than any other Klaatu song, but not for me:-) I suspect it did change the lives of Terry and John!
Personally, when I first heard the Carpenters version I was thrilled. I was very surprised how true to the original it is. And to this day I'm pretty surprised they did it.
I liked it then, and I still like it. I just wish they had covered one of my tunes:-)
If you'd like to speak to Terry or John you might best get them through
our record company.
John doesn't have e-mail, and Terry rarely uses it, so I don't have addresses for either of them.
I'm a big fan of Karen Carpenters singing, and I was very sad when she passed. What a voice!
Take care Rick.
