I went to a concert in 1975 and a friend and I managed to sneak into the building after the concert ended! We wound up upstairs and heard people coming down a hallway! Peaking around the corner, we saw Karen and Richard coming toward us, with a few other people with them! We almost freaked, but gathered up our courage to ask for autographs when they came around the corner! I got Karen's first, then Richard's...they were both nice about it, and we apoligized for bothering them! Karen leaned back against the wall, waiting for us to finish. She seemed distracted, and started to sing softly...I think for our benefit, as we just gaped at her. She smiled at us as we thanked both of them very much! We followed the group outside, where they had a limo waiting. We thanked them again and waived as they got into the car! We ran ahead of it...up toward the rest of the people who were waiting there, and when the car went by, we waved once again, and I could see Richard on my side waving! My friend and I were on cloud nine for weeks after that and I'll never forget Karen smiling at us in that hallway!!

Oh wow, you must have been on a high cloud after getting the chance to meet Karen and Richard. I was 13 when I saw them in concert and not driving yet obviously so my Mom insisted we leave right after.
Otherwise, I would have wanted to wait and follow anywhere I had to for a possible glimpse or if lucky enough, an autograph such as you did.
Great job and I'm so happy for you.

I never met K&R, but my dad saw them and stood pretty close to them at a car convention in Long Beach, California in 1977. He mentioned that Richard was a chain smoker, smoking one cigarette after another.
I saw the Carps perform in Las Vegas in December 1977 - it was a spectacular performance.
* kcfan, do you still have K&R's autographs? Did they sign on a program book?

I really enjoyed your story, Cheryl. Wow. you are so lucky! Unfortunately, I never got to see the Carpenters. I am interested (like Rick) about the autograph: What is it signed on? Where do you keep it now?

kcfan, what a great story! I never had the opportunity to see them in concert, let alone meet them. I think I would have just stammered and stared with my mouth open wide!
way to go on getting an autograph!

Great story -- thanks for sharing!
Did they write a personal note along with their autographs?

Glad you enjoyed my story! Karen and Richard signed on the only thing we grabbed at the time....a napkin! When I was moving, my father grabbed that box with the autograph in it, and it fell out into a mud puddle! I was never so mad in all my life!!!!!It only was signed with their names on it. but I was SOOOO ticked!! Around '96, I wrote to Richard asking him to sign the cover of the Coleman book and about 3 or 4 index cards. He sent them back with the date...my name...and his autograph!Pretty nice of him...but I miss Karen's autograph....at least I have the memory!

Gosh, Cheryl, that must have made you SCREAM real loud! Make one wonder, doesn't it, why something like that happen--to lose something so special.
At least you do have the RC autograph's; and the experience. Now that memory will never be "washed up" in a mud puddle, will it?

I have Richard's autograph on the front cover of the Coleman book...all encased in plastic, with the index cards inside!!! Never to be lost or dumped in mud puddles!!My memories of Karen after that concert are priceless anyway! I also had a couple of front row seats at other concerts that were fun! You can see lots up close that you can't further back!Richard's Wurlitzer piano failing and Karen behind the drums "filling in" the void!Laughing and joking with the audience....that's how I remember her! I saw the CarpenterS at West Virginia University but I can't remember the year. I was about 9yrs old so maybe 72 73. My mom is a huge CarpenterS fan and thats how I got go. My memories of the show are vague. The one thing I remember thinking was how do they sing with so many voices! Hey I was just a kid. When I ask mom about the show she says "I wanted to comb karens bangs back" shes a card.
