The Carpenters have so many songs that could be considered important on a worldwide sense or in it's message. I'd have to say their single most important message in song comes in the song Sing. It's a simple innocent song from a children's TV show, but the message is strong. ;D

The single most important Carpenters song is "Goodby to Love" 1972, the First ever power ballad. A lot of people state that Aerosmith's 'Dream On" , a minor hit in 1973 was the first power ballad, yet when I compare the two, 'Dream On" sounds a lot like "Goodby to Love". I have written the Nat. Academy of Recording Arts and Science , the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and "Rolling Stone" magazine, asking them what song do they regard as the first power ballad, but have not recieved a reply from any one. I also wrote to VH-1 asking them why they think 'Dream On" was the first power ballad, and not "Goodby to Love", but they did not write back either. Another person, whose name I do not know, agrees that "Goodby to Love" deserves the title first ever power ballad. I think some people just don't want to give the Carpenters credit for inventing the power ballad song. A power ballad is a ballad with a strong fuzz guitar, and I do not believe there was a power ballad song before "Goodby to Love", a top ten song in October 1972, that some Carpenters' fans did not like because it was too hard rock for them. ???Both "Sing" and "Goodbye To Love" are important songs for the Carpenters and also in a universal sense or even historic sense. But I believe the Carpenters' most powerful and most universally important song is "We've Only Just Begun". "We've Only Just Begun" has a very powerful message and the song carries a sentimental value for millions of people.

"We've Only Just Begun" will always be the Carpenters' signature song and a great wedding song, but I agree that "Goodbye to Love," with the fuzz guitar solo is the most important song. It actually changed music and and created the power ballad and should be remembered as such.

I never thought about it before, but the use of the fuzz guitar is very interesting. I wonder what inspired the C's to make this guitar such a big part in this song? I also wonder if they recorded pre-fuzz-guitar versions of the song?

Hi All, I would have to agree with Rick on this one. WE'VE ONLY JUST BEGUN will always forever be known by the Carpenters as their "signature" song. Even Karen agreed with that statement. It is just an achingly beautiful song with poignancy and has refreshing qualities to it. As well, whenever someone will mention the Carpenters in the media, they will always mention WE'VE ONLY JUST BEGUN, followed by CLOSE TO YOU.
My thoughts, Cameron

I'm inclined to say We've Only Just Begun, but Ben does give a good argument in favor of Goodbye To Love. Another to consider would be Top Of The World.

Its a toss up between We've Only Just Beguns and Close to you but I give the nod to Close To You. Close To You was their first number 1 song and solidified them as superstars. It is associated with the Carpenters as much as We've Only Just Begun.
