well , Rick, Karen in her underwear....still thinking on that...at least it is unusual and she's having a fun moment, I like her better with clothes on...but, it seems like it's ..oh ...you caught me! kinda picture and those are fun. And though thin in that pic., she's not overly thin it seems...

Beleive me if she were too thin, out of repsect, I would not have published it. But she looks good in this picture. I'm guestimating it's from 1974.
I contemplated publishing it for quite sometime. As a matter of fact the picture went into The Carpenters Online picture file in the earliest developmental stages of the website back in October 2003.
And then finally I just decided the world has seen Madonna's underwear - so why not Karen Carpenter's.

I received an interesting email today from a person who stated she is offended and outraged that The Carpenters Online published the picture of Karen in her underwear. She also went on to say that she is sure Karen and Richard would also be outraged and offended.
I was momentarily taken back by this email, as my intention with this picture was not to offend anybody, but to give Karen's fans another peak into the persona of Karen Carpenter. Karen was a more daring and adventurous person than a lot of us realize.
Anyway my response to the email was that I have had dozens of responses to the picture and all have said they really like the picture, and that hers was the only complaint I have received out of 1000's who visit the website. In response to her statement of K&R possibly being offended I commented that they probably wouldn't be, after all Karen posed for the picture herself. ***************************************************************
My thoughts on this picture: I really like it a lot. It's from a bootleg disc called "More Offerings". I think it shows the fun playful side of Karen. She looks in good shape and health. I do not find it at all sleazy. Her underwear are more of a bikini style than anything else.

???No reason for anyone to really complain...and I think your response to the person who was unhappy with it was very good. It's a little surprising to see Karen like that, but it's nothing to have a Cow about. It was, and still is for some, to idolize Karen and Richard to the point of not really seeing their faults. Their vocals were great, still are, and many folks may still have a tough time accepting the fact that the Carps.were not perfect. Certainly such unrealistic ideals had much to do with Karen' s own personal image of herself...fatally so. And Richard had his own health problems also as a result and anger. Fame throughout the show biz world does lead to tragedy for so many.

Hey All, I will add my two cents. I can understand why that woman was outraged. It's not a pic I would have published of her. There are so many other wonderful pictures of her out there, where she looks classy. This photo, I know was taken for fun and on a whim by the photographer. I would not agree that Karen would have been upset. She would have probably just laughed it off. And she looks like she is average weight. So it shouldn't be a big deal but some people might be a bit conservative. Oh well.
My thoughts, Cameron

I love the picture of Karen. Thank you Rick for printing it. It shows the human side of her.

Richard took the picture. A guest at his house managed to grab a copy of it and tried to sell it on e-bay. Richard had his lawyers put a stop to that sale. While Karen did not sign a letter of consent to have the photo published, once Richard had taken the picture, it was just a matter of time before it was released to the general public. I have seen photos of Karen in a red bikni, and I do not see much of a difference between the two pictures. It's not as if you can really see anything. That reminds me of a "Mad" magazine cartoon; a woman walks out to a pool to show of the bathing suit she borrowed from a friend. The friend asked the 1st woman what drawer she took the suit out of. When the 1st woman says she took it out of the top drawer on the right, the 2nd woman states 'that's not a bathing suit, that's underwear'. The 1st woman runs back into the house, ashamed.

Sounds like you have a pretty color for your eyes Rick.... hi Ben, glad you dropped by for the forum...I remember that Mad mag..thing...the lighter side...of swimming or whatever..that stuck out in my mind ..since many bikinis, especially these days, but yrs. ago, were much more revealing than underwear........ glad you knew about the info. on the pic.

I think the pic is okay. It's not THAT revealing, and Karen looks healthy and amused. (Not that she would be happy to see it on the internet, but....)
However, since we're discussing pictures: one pic that does disturb me is the one on the background wallpaper for this site and this forum, the one where Karen looks so emaciated and ill. Everytime I open the site, that pic depresses the heck out of me.
Would it be possible to replace it with a more flattering image of Karen?

In celebration of the success of "Gold: 35th Anniversary Edition", I replaced the old wallpaper on this forum with an image of the new disc cover. This should be a bit more uplifting.

Thanks, Rick. Definitely an improvement..... and very timely! I'm so glad this release is such a success (it was #2 on CD Universe all weekend!). They deserve it. Wonder how many young'uns are discovering this music for the first time now?

"Gold" is doing really well. Not only is it still #2 at CD Universe, it's also #26 at Amazon.com and #64 on Tower Records.com.
