What's your opinion? There have been several documentaries made about them. My favorite is the movie "The Karen Carpenter Story" from 1989. Though hard to watch, it is such a wonderful film! The hardest part for me to watch is the very first segment where paramedics are trying to bring Karen back, and they're wheeling her on a stretcher while "Rainy Days And Mondays" echos around and a young Karen dressed in pigtails roller-skates playfully. Oh, just thinking about it makes my eyes tear-up. I miss her so much.
Opinions?

Hi Superstargal!! Well, I think the CBS movie THE KAREN CARPENTER STORY is in a class all by itself. It's a docudrama, mostly truth and some fiction in it. It was done well, for time constraint, Carpenters music featuring some new songs, relaying facts not previously known, and showing the seriousness of Karen's eating disorder. IT was the Number One movie and show on the Neilson Ratings for that week, and became the 2nd most watched tv movie of the year. (I know my first name is Steven...was the first). Also, because of the movie being a ratings winner, there was a huge surge of Carpenters albums being sold. Now documentaries, there have been many. I think the best is the PBS Documentary...CLOSE TO YOU:Remembering the Carpenters. Very moving tribute to Karen. Very detailed in certain aspects, although not all the hits were detailed or mentionned... E! True Hollywood Story is very well done. Nice tribute to Karen and her persona. A&E Biography was okay...not that great! I was kinda disappointed with that one. BEHIND THE MUSIC was pretty good! I liked that one too. YESTERDAY ONCE MORE UK documentary is okay. THe fan club lady in there (not Rosina or EV) is annoying as heck. Although seeing Herb Alpert say that Karen was not happy with her solo album made me kinda upset...saying he couldn't remember the reason why it wasn't released...but I felt sad for him when a bolt seems to hit him and he looks as if he is going to break down when he talks about what a great lady Karen is, and how he misses her... There are other documentaries on them...from all over the world..
My thoughts, Cameron clongo83@hotmail.com

As Cam states the movie is in a class of it's own. I remember when it aired, it seemed like pretty much everybody I knew watched it. It was one huge success. People were very interested to know more about Karen - and that's where I have problems with the movie. We learned very little about her struggle, we never really heard anything about what Karen felt about her illness. The topic of her solo album was brushed over real quick. It was a good movie for a surface introduction of the rise of The Carpenters, but really not much more. Regardless, I still love the movie and I watch it about once a year. Though I would really like to see a new more indepth movie the centers on Karen (not Karen and Richard).
I also think the PBS Documentary...CLOSE TO YOU:Remembering the Carpenters, is by far the best documentary made on them.

:)I like all that I've seen about them, but I do like the movie..and I agree that the very first part w/ the emergency room scene is the hardest part of that to watch. The movie could have been better but seeing the documentaries cover the real heart of the Carps.

Yes, I've seen the A&E biography, and "Close To You - Remembering The Carpenters." It was very well done. There have been several Carpenters shows that I've seen, and all have been very enjoyable to watch (except when it's hard to watch how Karen passed away). "The Karen Carpenter Story" is my favorite though. What a magnificant duo! The best ever in my opinion.

I've seen several of the documentaries, all of which as you say really capture the Carpenters. There isn't a bad one around. The Carpenters will always be the best!

I liked the PBS special, Remembering the Carpenters, the best. Richard's insites to the music, unseen footage.. It was great. I didn't care for the A&E or E! documentaries, as much as the PBS and VH1 specials. The "Karen Carpenter Story" was nice but it did lack a lot of details about Karen. On the other hand, it did introduce "You're the One," and "Where do I go from here." I remember watching the special and thinking, I don't know those songs and I have every record.
my 2 cents....

Hi moe! Yes, I liked the PBS special very much as well. It covered so much, and after watching it, I wanted do nothing but listen to Carpenters music!! True, the movie did lack a lot. It's still my favorite. The casting was great, and they touched on some great songs, as well as Karen's health decline. But yes, I wish they could have added more. Thanks for your input moe!

I'm glad you raised this question.
I was at the movie rental store tonight and after I left I wondered if they might have some movies about the Carpenters.
Now I'll have some titles to take with me on my next visit.
Thanks, Will
