G'day all, Recently I've stumbled upon a website dedicated to a Karen Carpenter soundalike. Wonder what you guys think of her voice. www.carpenterstribute.com/jenny_demo_page.htmQuotes from the site : Quote from Leslie Ross - (Gloria Gaynor's backing vocalist) "When I heard Jenny's voice it is the nearest thing that I have ever heard to Karen Carpenter" Quote from Marion "Jenny's voice is hauntingly like Karen Carpenters" Quote from Janet "The voice of Karen Carpenter lives on in Jenny Sinclair.! I have seen Carpenters Magic perform at several gigs, the opening to the show with the background to Karen and the song 'We've only just begun' sends shivers down your spine as you are transported back in time to a fabulous treat of truly professional entertainment. Close your eyes and Karen is in the room. Unmissable !!" Personally i would rate any similiarites between 60-70 per cent

:)Hi bossnass15 and Ming..glad to have you visiting the site here and hope you stick around a while...it's always good to have new input and new info. from other Carps fans. I'm smoothie and grew up with the Carps sound and admire them more and more each day it seems. Yes, I ran across the Jenny Sinclair site just browsing one night, and from the start of listening to her, I was really amazed at how much she did sound like her. I even sent her a note or two asking things and she quickly replied. At first, I wasn't too thrilled that someone else was imitating Karen, but after Jenny sent me a note about how it was an honor and tribute to Karen and Richard, I decided she was right. I would love to see her show. Still, a little bit of an edge to her voice ..just enough that you know it isn't Karen, but she's very easy to listen to and the songs of course are classic and just as beautiful. Glad you checked her out. I didn't have an opportunity to hear the real Carps, unfortunately, but some have here on the site.

Thanks for the welcome smoothie2.Sorry about forgeting to introduce myself in my first post . Anyway I'm a Malaysian Chinese living on the other side of the world. The very first carpenter song that i've listened to was 'Yesterday once more' and that I recalled was when was a child( I'm in my teens now). Her voice greatly appealed to me even at such a young age and I remembered asking my mum at that time who sang that song. Anyhow time flashes by, and all seem forgotten. Until 1 day there was this movie-released, an Asian kng-fu version flick of "charlies angels" simply titled "Close to you". And as you already guess it, that Carpenter song was borrowed and soon that unique, melancholic voice got most Asian audiences asking about that voice ;D. I was no different and boy did that song really make me yearn for more. Soon,I started downloading some of their songs and I was indeed enchanted and mesmerized by the uniqueness and beauty of her voice. That was about 2 months ago(?) and Currently I own about 1 gigabyte worth of carpenter songs and mtvs. ;D

Hello Ming and Bossnass15, welcome to you both. I think purchasing Carpenters on DVD and CD is well worth it just for the pictures and great liner notes as well as better sound quality, and Karen really does have such a uniquely beautiful smooth voice.

Don't get me wrong. I DO WANT to support and buy carpenters stuff legally. However besides the famous compilations of famous Carpenters songs(which I already owned), the other albums seem so hard to find around my place, which is rather sad. That is why I had to resort to the internet for the other songs, musical specials, documentaries and even the famous Karen Carpenter Story by Todd Haynes(I understand it was banned) where it is pratically non-existant in this country. Besides, purchasing online can be very, very expensive due to our weak currency and I'm only a student with many financial concerns to begin with. All in all, I don't see this as a barrier to enjoy carpenters music and I do grow to adore them and preach their music.

I just want the musical enterprises UNDERSTAND that many young people can't afford the high cost of a CD or DVD. I was a young like you , but in my time, didn't exist the internet. So, it was difficult to me to enjoy all the Carpenters records I would know it existed. NOW, I own every Carpenters LP's, CD's and DVD's. The internet is a good way to make an artist or record known.

I agree with you Federico. It's a shame that music is so expensive these days. It's even more sad that so many of today's popular musicians don't make the quality music that we enjoyed in the past, nowadays it's all about the look and the video, instead of the music first.
As for downloading music, I can understand why many do it. I think it is a good way to expose new and old groups to the public. In the past I've downloaded songs from new groups which I ended up liking enough to buy. If it weren't for downloading it first I probably wouldn't have bought it.
It's a shame that a lot of the Carpenters catalog is not available in China. I think their entire catalog should be available in all parts of the world, they certainly have enough of a following to warrant this.

I'm a Chinese living in Malaysia not in China, LOL(We're Singapore's closest neighbour if you look up the map). We do have library collections of contempary music bands, but unfortunately there are only fractions of oldies albums available simply because of the lack of demand for it.
Personally, I would like to think that current selective music groups do possess talents in them. Take for example, the now defunct Smashing Pumpkins group. The combination of both Billy Corgan(lead vocalist) and James Iha(Guitars) was awesome together as they did their own distinctive brand of music....so did Radiohead and a host of many others. However I guess it all comes down to like you said, individual preferences and different times.
I'm a fan of great music, regardless of the genre. And when I heard Karen's voice, it was totally unique, totally different from any other female vocalist ever, be it in the yesteryears or now.I think her voice is timeless and I do not deny my likings for it. Teens these days are more into following the masses and they refuse to listen to what they deem as too 'old', which is such a shame. I guess they really should widen their listening horizons and would definitely find the carpenters music to their likings. Carpenters music are DEFINITELY classic.
Btw did Karen sang a full version of "Magic Moments"?

Has anyone heard Shania Twain sing "Home ain't where his heart is anymore?" I thought she sounded a lot like Karen on this one. (the phrasing of the words) In fact, a review of the album, before she became so popular, called her a singer with a "Karen Carpenter" fetish! It was probably meant to be an insult, but I would take it as a compliment. I have heard that Shania admires Karen's voice, so she may look at that review as a good thing! 10+ million copies sold in the U.S. alone would say that Shania has the final word on the subject!

Of course there are many groups out there with great talent. One of my favorites is a group named Cousteau, they have excellent harmonies and great musical arrangements. King Crimson is my current favorite on the alt-rock scene, also Coldplay, Norah Jones is one of the best of the best - all make excellent music - without being more concerned about what color their hair is this week or trying to cause controversy to get sales.

Hi Moe I had always thought that Shania sounded very similar to Karen in her inflections and phrasing of the song HOME AINT WHERE HIS HEART IS ANYMORE. It's neat to know that other fans can see the similarities too. And she is a big fan of Karen, as she has many many times stated that in articles and specials. And it shows. It would be really neat for her to do a Karen cover. Another big fan is Jann Arden, another Canadian singer, well loved in her homeland...
My thoughts, Cameron

Anyone happen to know whether Karen sang a full version of "magic moments"? (She sang a part of it in the perry como medley).
I gather the song was from "Fear and loathing in Las Vegas".
