Hi All, Well finally I had to take a listen to this song THE END OF THE WORLD sung by Skeeter Davis. I was shocked!! I could not believe this song was as big as a hit as it was. Her singing was okay but not great, in my opinion. I personally adore Karen's version on the NOW AND THEN album. Karen sings the heck out of this song and makes it her own! I wonder if Skeeter Davis ever publicly stated any thoughts about Karen or Karen recording her song...

I didn't know that Skeeter D. recorded it but many artists record songs that others have had some success with. I was wondering if maybe the actress Shelly Fabares also recorded it..she was one of those one hit wonders possibly. I know she was a teen on Donna Reed show and then of course all grown up on Coach. But I know for sure Karen could hit those low notes in her own way and no one could compare with her in my book too. Karen was so good at singing both happy and sad songs, that of course it was hard to tell about her real feelings, but that's how it is in the show biz world. It seems she felt more in touch with a sad song though than a happy with the way things turned out. I think basically she was a happy person, but once her health started failing she felt even as a failure or not quite good enough to fulfill what her dreams were. She surely could light up a room though with that smile and her sense of humor.

Karen's voice was so deep and full bodied so full of youth and wisdom and Richard's arrangements were and are far beyond what others were and have been doing. I've heard Skeeter's recording, it's not too bad, but really pales in comparison to Carps. Same with "There's A Kind Of Hush". Herman's Hermits did what I think of as a quick one dimensional production and Peter Noone's voice is just okay. But K&R took it and made it into a great catchy solid pop record.

Yeah, Karen could have sung a song about a telephone book and it would have sold a million copies. She was gifted. To be able to sing the way she did, and to affect many people with her voice and her song stylings is amazing. Shelly Fabares recorded and had a huge hit with Johnny Angel but as always, it pales in comparison...when put against Karen's version. Definately...Karen spoiled us with her voice!!

Hi Smoothie2... No I am not tired of hearing your posts. I think it is so awesome for all of us to be gathered together in our love of The Carpenters, and in my case, Karen in particular...It's a way to share our diverse thoughts...and a way for us to cope with the world at large...by having a hobby, something that can bring a smile to our faces. The Carpenters do that to me...especially Karen...

:)For some reason, I recall from an ad on tv that Carole King recorded "It's Going To Take Some Time This Tim". There may have been others too that recorded it. The End of the World is a beautiful but sad song, but when Karen sang it, it was truly meant for her. I did listen to a song sample of Skeeter Davis singing End of the World, and though good, Karen's version is more meaningful.
