Can we find something unique about every Carpenter's song within the complete collection of Carpenter's songs? I bet we can.
For example, I believe the use of the harmonica in Desperado is unique within the full collection.
If I'm wrong, let me know and where else it can be found.
Feel free to pile on multiple uniquenesses to a song.
Other examples of uniqueness might include composer and style of music -- whatever.

One of my favorite unique qualities of a Carpenters song is Richard's piano work at the end of "Boat To Sail". I also like the use of vibes which gives the song a chiming sound. I've been listening to this one again lately.

What I find unique...is that in several songs...Karen laughs or chuckles whilest singing...I find that to be very neat...on songs like I JUST FALL IN LOVE AGAIN, MAKE BELIEVE IT'S YOUR FIRST TIME, KEEP MY LOVELIGHT BURNING...

My favorite is the French horn solo in "Superstar." It's what made me choose that instrument when I was in the sixth grade! Another instrument associated with Carpenters music is the oboe.

So what is the instrument that sounds like a muted trombone in 'I Can Dream Can't I'?

So what is the instrument that sounds like a muted trombone in 'I Can Dream Can't I'? I'm not sure, but it may possibly be the vibraphone (vibes), which is an electronic instrument which resembles the marimba. The miramba is somewhat like a xylophone.

Is the muted trombone in I Can dream Can't I possibly a english horn?

after reading Boat2Sail's post about the English Horn, I realize the muted trombone sound is not the vibes. Because the vibes have a bell sort of sound like a xylophone.

:)Several of their songs have excellent blends of different types of instruments. I think the use of the harp in "I Know I Need to Be in Love" is unique along with those vocals are really magical. Other songs as in "For All We Know"..feature a wonderful blend of maybe an electric piano and some other kind of instrument. Also to me, perhaps other artists have used the format , but at the beginning of a record one song is sung and then again at the last of the record is the same song such as on "a Song for You". The record starts out with A Song for you and then it ends with that. Someone mentioned how a harmonica is used in the song Desperado..I believe it can be heard also "I Can't Make Music". I like the way the use of the flute is played in "Mr. Guder" and "This Masquerade". The use of it reminds me of a butterfly or bird flitting through the air here and there. It gives the whole song a light sound. But I will admit I'm not real knowlegdable about musical instruments especially the different horns.
