Thanks for providing this little hidden treasure, Rick. As you are aware, I, too, am a big fan of Karen's solo effort, though I'm not as familiar with all of the details of it as you are. I do have to say there is some wonderful material here that should absolutely have been released at the time - and not only because of the music but it got me to thinking - perhaps, just perhaps if this album had been released, things with Karen's life might have changed, too - and she might still be with us today. I don't know if it could have made that significant of a difference, but it seems to me it might have played a role in Karen's recovery rather than just add to the already undue stress she was under. Of course, just a thought and just an opinion.....but I wonder.......hmmmm...... It will be interesting to see the postings in this thread, I am sure. Thanks again! Tim

I have always loved her solo album. I am very sure that it would have been a hit had it been released. I have many thoughts on this project...and the controversy it had, when it was unreleased for many years.

You know I feel the same way. It just goes to reinforce some of the politics and redtape that have also held back some other talented artists. Tragic.

I feel that from the record company's perspective it was all business however they may have been influenced by other participants with more personal agendas. I feel record company's are all about the money and since herb Alpert was not present at the meeting for the album release the personal element was removed Moss never liked the Carpenters but he did like the money they were making him and would not take a risk of losing his cash cow so i feel his motivation was purely business related the other participants were another story however.

I had always heard that Richard was fearful she would make it on her own and was behind the whole thing. I wouldn't put it past him. Thoughts?

sad to think but i agree with you billy. i think richard was afraid of losing karen . her solo album was really good and she would have been very successful on her own. but i don't think she would have abandoned carpenters. she would have balanced her career with carpenters and solo. I had always heard that Richard was fearful she would make it on her own and was behind the whole thing. I wouldn't put it past him. Thoughts?

Richard was the only producer that truly understood Karen's marvelous voice and knew how to capture her essence in the studio. After listening to Karen's solo album (many times now) it is my opinion that even Karen didn't fully understand her unbelievable vocal abilities, her limitations and her strengths.
When you vocally have a lush low end as incredible as Karen's and she chose to use her higher vocal register on her solo work. One has to wonder what her reasoning was. What Phil's reasoning was? Both Karen and Richard were quoted as saying "the money's in the basement" referring to Karen's lower vocal register. Karen knew this. I wish I could ask Karen the reasoning behind her solo choices.
Even Herb has been quoted as saying "Karen never really got just how good she was". That's beyond my imagination that Karen didn't fully know or understand the voice God had blessed her with.
So many questions and so few answers. For Karen's fans it still is so incredibly frustrating and sad that we didn't get to experience Karen's talent as she grew more mature and wiser. What could have been with Karen is the question so many of us ask and I'm d**n sure Richard to this day still asks himself as well. We sure do miss you Karen!

Richard also controlled Karen, so did her mother. Their family was a disfunctional one. Imagine having a mother that never once told that she loved her daughter? and having a brother like Richard, always in your business, telling you what to do, critisizing you, I just watched a show, real life footage of therapy with the family and when the Dr. asked Agnes to tell Karen to tell her that she loved her, she just blew up and said this is rediculous, Karen knows I do. and then there was Richard, I believe that Karen would have made it, if they had just left her alone. She could control her weight, so she felt like this was the one thing that her brother or mother couldn't tell her what to do, so she destroyed her body because of their misdoings in Karen's life. How cruel......

I'm going to go along with the opinions of therapy & am very angry at what the Mother & Richard didn't do, Richard could have stood up for his Sister during therapy & said Mother I will say I love you Karen , you are very much a big part of this family , The Carpenter's group, the albums, the music etc. Close friends she had, should have been invited to the therapy. Yes, whomever on another note should have released the album, Herb Albert should have stepped in, this could have boosted Karen's self esteem also, she was a beautiful woman that I remember all to well growing up, she looked fine with weight , never saw anything wrong with her looks, I myself am 8-10 years younger, would have loved the chance to have had chance her husband had with her at the time, she was a vibrant , beautiful woman full of life to share with all around her. Cheers, Karen, you may have left us from this World , but never our hearts!
