Give us your interpretation of this picture... thoughts, ideas, fantasy scenario, what Karen may have been thinking, etc.

Seems to me she might be thinking how much she loves playing the "tubs", as we called them in college - she was such a creative drummer - and I like this shot because she's standing, she's smiling - she's working at it, but not too hard - and obviously she is having a grand old time with whatever it is she's playing. I think Karen may have sort of "created as she went" during times like these. GREAT shot. Love watching her just show us how fun this whole "being a drummer" really is. Tim

Karens in the zone as they say she is in her own world doing what she loves best drumming. Karen is probably not even aware she is in front of an audience she is just improvising and playing those darn things (her drums) like a bat out of hell. She does not need to even think of what she's doing she a natura,l she's happyand having a ball, she's Karen in her own environment where she rules, she's simply, naturally, Karen.

Yes, Karen is truly in that zone. She is truly in her own Heaven in that particular moment.
I find this picture interesting as it's not the most feminine shot of Karen. She's looks very athletic yet at the same point she still somehow possesses that angelic aura about herself.
I would believe Karen is playing her famous Strike Up The Band drum medley. I was fortunate enopugh to see her perform this live and she was outstanding.
... Tim... how funny you've picked up the Saturn thing... doesn't the avatar look great?

What I see ...
* Karen's wide stance * flexed knees * Showmanship * lean into the music * "in to it" & happy about what she is doing * fun for Karen * jaw prominent * clothes - pants: decorated on the legs; hip bone shows through shirt: lead sister
I've seen clips circa this point in time. Karen is most likely surrounded by drums. Her stance is wide and her knees are flexed to accommodate both movement and more hitting power. She has quick wrists, metronome like precision timing, a free flow style that exudes pure joy ... and a natural talent.

Hi Rick I do not know if you were just doing an interpretation of the picture here or not but correct me if I am wrong is this not a picture taken from the 1976 holland concert? I recall us discussing Karens performance in the Grease Medley once here and in the same concert she is playing the Strike Up The Band medley almost identical to the one on the first TV special only live and shes wearing the same lead sister tee shirt and jeans and if I am careful I can almost get the frame that would be this picture. I do not want to spoil anyones interpretation of this picture but I was wondering if the picture was from that Holland concert. BTW I find it interesting that Rick did not think this was the most feminine shot of Karen I will admit the long gowns and dresses may have made Karen appear more feminine but I never really thought of this picture as less feminine or tomboyish. I always thought she looked quite feminine and beautiful in this particular pic dispite her being a little on the light side (dare I say skinny but not too bad) in the pic. No criticism here just an obsevation I never really looked at Karen in that light when I saw the picture. I guess when I see Karen exhibit masculine or tomboyish traits I just think she so cool and never think that I may think she's cool cause she is not being traditionally feminine interesting take Rick which is why these interpretaion game are fun for me.

Hi Enigma... some interesting thoughts here...
I think the reason I made that comment about it not being the most feminine shot of Karen is mainly because of her stance. She's ready to move fast to the next set of drums.
I'm not sure which concert this shot is from as I believe Karen pretty much wore her Lead Sister Tee all around the world in the 1976 tour. They toured not only Europe but also Japan and parts of the U.S. - so the pic could be from anywhere. But, it probably is the Holland show. Which was a great performance - I have it on DVD.

Yes, Rick - I'd used these over in Tim's corner a couple of times, because of your Saturn song....that's sort of how I came across them in the first place...I think the colors are beautiful.... At any rate - I loved reading through these posts - Enigma, I have to agree completely with you that I think Karen looks to be "in the zone." A perfect phrase to use. She's definitely in her element, and it comes across so completely that she's having a blast doing what comes naturally to her. Does anyone know if Karen had more than one "Lead Sister" tee? I have seen this tee up close and personal at the Carpenters Exhibit at the Richard and Karen Carpenter Center for the Performing Arts. If she only had one, and this is it - then I've seen this one and the first thing that ran through my mind when I saw it was "boy, look at how TINY that shirt is!"' It looks like it could fit a 10 year old. Very little. Very. Rick, I would tend to agree that Karen is undoubtedly performing the Strike Up The Band medley - it looks like she's at the point where she's playing S'Wonderful. How fortunate YOU were to see them do this song, in particular, life. That's a memory you'll retain for the rest of your life, I'm sure. Good conversation everyone. These interpretations are quite interesting. For as much as we typically think alike on a lot of issues, each of us has a clear idea of what we "see" when it comes to these, and here we go....learning from each other again. Best to all, Tim

Great pciture I've seen other clips from this performance but never this one. Karen looks very happy to be playing her drums.

I forgot to put in that Karen has flipped her left drumstick around so that she is playing with the heavier end on her left hand side. This is often done to compensate for hand dominance and it produces a more even sound.

;DWell stated everyone about this fun pic. Karen is just full of that happy energy...not necessarily wanting to show off...perhaps just like a little kid ..just can't get enough of that merry-go-round..... ;D hEY ALSO ....afterward perhaps for her...and others...thoughts..."now where are the Execedrins?!" (recall there was an Excedrin pain reliever ad yrs. ago: something about I'm having Excedrin headache number 231...? " or some such! But Karen here obviously is too thin.......but having fun
