Karen's daring, casual chic wardrobe, her tilted head, and the intimate jazz night club feel of the setting remind me of the song "Guess I Just Lost My Head" on her solo album. The unusual pose looks like a choreographed movement appropriate for the song.

This is an interesting (somewhat dark, somewhat playful) picture of Karen Carpenter.
Here's one interpretation - this is my fantasy interpretation - not the realistic - what it might really be:
Karen (the jazz princess) is sitting amidst her cherished drums as she drops the sticks to pick up the microphone and sing a playful semi-upbeat jazz tune ("Guess I Just Lost My Head" fits the mood perfectly). It's a summer evening in the dark (and most likely smoky) jazz club - so Karen is wearing cut off shorts and a bikini sort of top to keep cool (and look cool). She crosses her legs, tilts her head and holds on to her cap to be a bit flirtatious with her audience. Karen is having a good time performing to her attentive audience.
I'll come back with my realistic interpretation of what may possibly be going on in this pic.

Observations: *the room is dark *microphones x 2 . . . one on a stand ; one held in hand *more than one trap set set up *K on throne between 2 drum sets *K's physical appearance . . . long nails, good weight, dark circles under her eyes *K's clothes . . . jaunty cap, cropped top, nice belt with new no-hem shorts, bare foot, no jewelry *K's expression . . . open, relaxed *K's pose . . . crossed legs (left over right), left hand holding cap to head, right hand holding microphone - high arm position, mouth open (teeth show), left upper body tilt *who is the photographer? . . . someone well known -a friend, close associate, or family member what is happening? Speculation: 1) a relaxing evening at home, down in the music room; 2) pose practice for stage appearances

It's good to get the female perspective of things.

To take things in a completely different direction....
The Picture Caption might read : "Umm, Rich?...I think you split your pants out."

The Picture Caption might read : "Umm, Rich?...I think you split your pants out." ???Ha ha..wisejester7!!.... ;DMY INTERPRETATION....My guess is that Karen could very well be at home to record some songs...I don't think she would wear what she is out in public...but she might have. In any case, the pic is truly different than most you see her in.......She may be getting ready to sing and perhaps Richard is late for the session. So, in the meantime, she may have sung one song and then to get approval she leans over holding her cap, and says something like how did I do on that one?

Since I've posted my fantasy observation of this picture (Karen performing in a jazz club), I will now share my realistic observation.
I feel this picture is a pic snapped at a rehearsal in their home studio. I feel this is so because of Karen very casual attire. I'm not sure if she's barefoot or possibly wearing some sort of flip-flop type sandal. Notice her belt matches the color of her top. Karen always seemed to be color co-ordinated in all that she wore. She was a snappy dresser even in her casual wear.
This is one of my most favorite pictures of Karen. She looks great!
