Excellent guess Wisejester7 - but the artist is not Johnny Cash.

Could the singer be Glen Campbell and the song be "True Grit"?
Campbell appeared in the 1969 movie of the same name and performed the title song. The song "True Grit" was was nominated for an Academy Award, as were the songs "For All We Know" (from the movie "Lovers and Other Strangers") and "Bless the Beasts and the Children" (from the movie of the same name) that were popularized by the Carpenters in subsequent years.

Yes, Dreams... the artist is Glen Campbell and the song is "True Grit"... now what is the Carpenters/Karen/Richard connection to "True Grit"?

John Wayne, who starred in "True Grit" as Rooster Cogburn, considered Karen in playing the role of the young, tomboyish heroine Mattie Ross in the movie, but it ultimately went to Kim Darby. While Karen may not have Kim's background as an actress, she certainly can act spunky and could have done a great duet with Cogburn's young Texas ranger sidekick played by Glen Campbell!

Correct Dreams - you got the right connection...
Yes, a duet between Carpenter and Campbell would have been outstanding... we can dream can't we...

I remember seeing this movie when it came out. Karen 'fit' the tomboyish heroine Mattie Ross character pretty well. It's too bad that she didn't really get the chance to try her wings in acting.
