I give this one 5 stars even though it's not one of my favorite songs overall. Karen does such an amazing sing for this.

I like the song, and Karen sings it expertly, of course - but it's not one that grabs me by my ankles, if you get my drift. I've always enjoyed listening to it, though. 4 stars Tim

Five Stars
Carpenters fans consider this to be Karen's all-time best vocal performance. And I agree with this. Karen sings this song with warmth, intensity, strength, tenderness, depth and soul. Her performance on this dark tune is absolutely flawless. Karen Carpenter just does not get any better.
Richard's arrangement is also outstanding. He went all the way with constructing the music for this song. His arrangement is intricate and intense.

Karen just takes an ordinary song and makes it her own. Her version is pure. No one can touch it. The way she soars vocally up and down is breathtaking to listen to. She really adds her heart and soul within this performance. At first, I never liked it, until I listened to how hard it is to sing perfectly and with perfect breath control. Karen handles it in a magestic way. THe way she holds the note at the end, and goes lower and sustains it is unbelievable. Beautiful lament of a theme. She was the best at handling all types of themes, especially sad themes. This IS her BEST recorded work of all time...and there are many other songs, almost worthy of this accolade.
My thoughts, Cameron

A remarkably convincing performance from Karen considering that she disliked "Solitaire" at the time and never warmed to it as she had with "Superstar". 5 Stars. L

I grew up listening to the Neil Sedka original version, but Karen brings the song to a whole new level. I love it. 5 stars from me.
On wikipedia though it's mentioned that Karen never really cared for the song herself, but the passion she puts into it would easily make you believe otherwise.
