I learned recently that an email friend of mine here in the U.S. is hosting a college student from Japan. I decided to test the Carpenter/Japan connection and asked her to ask her student if he is familiar with The Carpenters.
My friend who is familiar with the Carpenters (from the 70s) didn't expect the young student to know of The Carpenters, but to her surprise, he said he was very familiar with them and they are very popular in Japan.

The popularity of the Carpenters in Japan also shows through on the internet, as their are several websites made by people from Japan. This site also receives a good amount of visitor's from there.

Hi All, Yes, in Japan...The Carpenters are huge! I think way bigger than here in the North American region. I must admit, they have great taste!! They really love the family image of a brother and sister team...and the musical style and appeal. They have won some huge awards there, sold millions of records there...had several Grand Prix Single of the Year...(I Won't Last a Day Without You...being one of them)...and many, many albums. And several sold out tours there...They have even surpassed the Beatles there in terms of popularity...or so I have heard. Carpentersmania...

As you all say, the Carpenters were ahuge in Japan and continue to be. Apparently the japanese arked is difficult to enter for foreign artists. As we all know, karaoke is also huge in Japan and the Carpenters are one of the most popular acts to sing karaoke, especially Yesterday Once More I have been told. For those of you who have seen the "Live In Japn" video, you can really see how popular they were. It also shows when they arrive in Japan in 1974 to do their sell out concerts. When they come to the airport the people just scream and goes wild. They also interview some of them and they look so enthusiastic. Great video!
Apparently the compilation "22 greatest hits" are the biggest selling album by a foreign artist in Japan with over 3million copies sold and it was released in 1996!!
