An Englishman living in France, but still with a certain song buzzing in my head all these years after the song became a hit - Goodbye to love. I still get a real thrill hearing that guitar solo - but whose hands were on the guitar? Did Richard C compose the solo too? Probably the best guitar solo I've ever listened to - forget the rest. Hendrix was in a different world, great, but not always as easy on the ears as the Goodbye to love solo.

There are very few songs of Karen's that I don't like. This song is another one that I DO like....because it feeds a lonelier side of me.
So, I agree with Ming in that this song can make one feel very sad.... it has that negative melancholy sad side to it, but that's what makes the song so well loved! Every human can relate, in one way or another, to its sadness.
I also agree with you, John....the guitar solo's in this song are absolutely awesome! It makes the song, in many ways.....aside from Karen's beautiful voice!
It's not a number one favorite song, but I will give it a 4, because it comes very close.

Five Stars
This is one of the Carpenters' ultimate classics.
The lyric is dark and somewhat bleak. I'm generally not dark and bleak but when Karen sings these lyrics she really puts her all into it. Once again she's living the words of the song.
I describe this song as being "grand". It builds and builds to that wonderful (and famous) Tony Peluso guitar solo. Many musician and music lovers from all genres of music consider Tony's guitar solo to be one of the very best ever in the history of music. go Tony, go Carpenters.
Great song!

I gave it 5 stars. I agree it's a very sad song and considering what happened to Karen, it probably was not good for her to sing it repeatedly as she had to throughout the years. Aside from that, no one but Karen could infuse such a bleak song with the indescribeable magic that she did. Karen and Richard hit "paydirt" with this song both commercially and artistically.

4 stars for this one ....The Peluso solo I think was very controversial thing when the song came out because it was unlike any of the other songs they were known for...and like Ken, I really didn't care for it when it came out either because it was so different and too "rocky" at that time for what i admired from the C's then... but Love it now...especially the solo.. ........I do also agree that actually it is a sad song as far as lyrics go and Karen truly seemed to lean into those kind of dark messages a little much though her performance of course is just perfect... ................................ hey Welcome John Helliwell...feel free to register and be part of the forum..it's great.... smoothie/kathy

4 Stars A very haunting song with lyrics I am sure have been close to anyones heart at any one time in their life. An equally haunting melody
the line....."and all I know of love is how to live without it".....is quite a comparison to the later "I Need To be In Love..........."I'm hangin' on a hope but I'm alright"...........

4 stars
This song is awesome! The only reason I give it 4 vs 5 is that I feel the ending goes on too long. It works great in the live shows, but a bit much on a record, for me.
Karen's breath control is beyond belief in this song. Try to sing along without passing out. The lyrics are so haunting to Karen's life that it is almost spooky. Richards arrangement is awesome and the fuzz guitar is a great touch. As stated earlier, it just goes on a little to long for my taste.

When I first heard this track long after Karen had died, I was blown away with the irony of her singing such overtly dark lyrics so utterly beautifully. I don't think it's one of her clearest studio recordings though...it is just me, or does Karen step back from the microphone a few times, for example during "loneliness and empty days will be my only friend...."?
As always, the delicate drum-fills were a fascination to me (particularly that now-famous tom-tom flourish before the chorus finale); and then of course that yearning oboe counter-melody.
And then BAM....in the middle of this gorgeous song, a heavy fuzz guitar solo which seemingly comes from NO-WHERE - like a bulldozer in a rose garden! BUT that guitar solo is SO widely hailed as one of the best in recorded history...I can't help but respect it's impact.
Recently a book containing "the most depressing songs ever written" featured "Goodbye To Love".
Has anyone ever seen the complete video of "Goodbye To Love"?
4 Stars. L

Being alive, and 17 when this first charted here, was a special time. The eve of my senior year of high school, and all of the emotions, and along comes this song. I'm posting a copy of the KQV weekly survey from August 1, 1972 (God, it was an eternity and over a million miles ago...) so that you can see how well this song's styles fit in with the other Top 40 songs from this time. What I wouldn't give to know then what I know now...

I'll have to say in listening to "Goodbye to Love", I just want to keep hearing Karen and Richard sing, AH, AH, AH.......AH's along with Tony Peluso's rocking guitar solo, hoping that the song will never end..
