Opening night at the circle music hall in Los Angeles.
I remember this night very vividly.
Karen Carpenter stood to the left of the stage myself to the right (just off stage). A small intro was played by Richard on piano then it just sprang into the song, a song that would change the face of things.
Karen walked slowly onto stage raising her microphone ‘ Why do birds suddenly appear every time you are near’ came softly but very strong out of the speakers all over the hall. A chill went quickly down my spine.
Karen was dressed on a black evening gown. The audience did not say a word all eyes quick averted to the stage.
‘Why do stars fall down from the sky every time you walk by’ I made my entrance with all the nerves in my body doing a little dance, Karen gave a welcoming smile to me joining her on stage. I wore a White Pant suit.
‘On the day that you were born the angels got together’ yes ladies and gentlemen we joined vocal and for the rest of the song.
As Karen and I settled into the song we relaxed and things seemed to get a little easier, also as we saw the faces on people totally with us for that moment was the most incredible feeling that we had that night.
The song closed and the room seemed stunned there was a slight pause of silence, then the room broke into applause. We made our thanks well known and returned to our corners of the stage.
Backstage we were like children ‘did you see did you hear, that was amazing wanna go again’.
We had done it the first performance of the single that was set to hit the charts the very next day.
Nothing that night could keep us still we were all so excited and also nervous of what would happen with the charts.
Karen and I reflected some years later about this performance it was about 2 am in the morning in Karens apartment in New York where she had a recording studio, we were taking on a totally new recording one that we had written together called ‘Driving South’ we made some of our best material in the early hours of the morning and would spend hours going over the same song to perfect it. Not only this we took time out to talk things over not just in our careers but of our personal lives to we grew to have a very strong bond over the years. Things did not stop with what people knew or what they thought they knew.
