Performance
With Close to you finished, it was time for a little promotion before the song hit. We were invited to perform at a function where a lot of the recording studios and managers were on the look for promotion.
A&M had decided that it was our time and the industry should be shown what they were about to get from the group.
Well the night had arrived we were all back stage dressed ready to go. We could hear the crowds. The four of us were getting pretty nervous. The set up was to be Richard and Peter at the pianos and Karen and I sat on stools to begin. We were only performing two songs, which were ‘Close to you’ and ‘maybe its you’.
It was time we went out there, I distinctly remember as the opening to ‘Close to you’ began a kind of hush fell over the room.
‘Close to you’ could not have gone better, the audience loved it, all four of us were elated. Karen and I sat down on the stools and performed ‘Maybe its you’ again it went down a storm.
After the performances we went to join the party and to meet people. I remember walking round seeing many people, when I doubled back on myself I saw Karen talking to Petula Clarke, I went over. Karen introduced me to her.
We had a great conversation about our performance, she was and is a very nice lady to whom this day I still keep in contact with.
After the show we all went back to my apartment to discuss. We were on a total natural high, we could not believe what had just happened and we all loved it.
Even at that early stage in our career Richard and Peter kept saying to Karen and I how much chemistry we had on stage. We needed no rehearsal we just knew what and where the other was going whether this was vocally or bodily on stage. Karen and I noticed this properly in later performances, we still say we spent so much time with each other that we just kinda knew and never really had to think about it, this also happened in the studio on tracks.
I remember quite some years later being in Karens home studio in New York, we were trying a new take on what was to become ‘A Kind of Hush’ where Karen went low and I went High. I still today have this recording on tape and listened to it recently and it sounds great. Neither of us planned this and in the middle of this recording I remember looking over and just smiling.
We really did not know what was to come and how big and exciting things were about to get. We knew it was going to be hard but I don’t think even we were prepared for certain things that happened.
There is good and bad in everyones life but as the years rolled on there is only so much time that one can stay in that lime light that we endured for many many years. but I am gettin a little ahead of myself and all will be told to the best of my account. Well I do sometimes forget things you know
