With ‘Close to you’ finally finished and ready for the off so to speak, we were all on a roll and that natural high was so great.
I arrived at the studio one morning before Karen and Richard, I was listening to ‘Maybe its you’ written for ‘Spectrum’ I rewound the track time and time again falling deeper and deeper into the song. I had always had a total fascination with Karens voice. What I didn’t know was part way through me walking round the studio singing along with Karens vocal. She was right behind me. When the track finished she applauded, I was shocked and jumped a little. ‘ Karen I did not see you there’ ‘ Yea and that I am glad of because that sounded really great, wanna track it’. ‘ Well erm’ at that point I had no idea what to say as upto know I had gone along with songs that were presented to me. ‘ Come on Richard will be here soon and I want him to hear what I just heard’.
‘Well only if you are sure’ still feeling very unsure of myself.
‘ Catherine I don’t think that you understand, I have a total adoration for your voice, and don’t ya think that it just harmonies with my own so well, I mean just looked at the result of close to you, can you imagine of the things that we can achieve. With the ranges that we both have I think that we have a lot of intricate we can test out’.
At that point I was stunned beyond words, and kinda just nodded.
Richard and Peter arrived and Karen jumped on them as they entered the room, ‘ Wanna hear something really good’. ‘ Karen come on don’t go that far’ I said. ‘ Oh don’t listen to her, now get that booth’.
Richard and Peter began to play ‘Maybe’ and Karen and I sang the main vocal. From inside the mixing room Herb was listening, when we had finished we all heard it, his voice over the intercom mic ‘ track it guys, and track it now, am serious what you think Richard’. Richard had the biggest smile and his thumb went up.
The next was finalising ‘Maybe’ and we had great fun doing it. We had more or less finished but it was late into the evening. Peter was tired and said to Karen that he should take her home, as we always did Karen and I embraced, ‘I will call you later if you are still up’ ‘ Okay Karen night peter safe journey’.
With Karen and Peter gone, and all the guys, there was just me and Richard left in the studio. ‘ Well kiddo hungry’ Richard said from behind the piano. ‘Actually no I am too excited and hyped up’ ‘ Okay well how about a night cap’. ‘ Okay’ I said ‘ but lets get outta here you can come and see my apartment if ya want, it’s a little homelier now’. ‘ Okay I will follow you in my car’.
We got to my apartment and Richard settled on the sofa. ‘ You want a glass of wine shloer okay’ ‘ yea that is fine’.
I sat beside him and we talked for hours well it was late into the morning.
We had quite a lot of life to catch up on. I told him about my life in New York, and my failed relationship with Antony Dyson at that point quite a scary subject to me, he went on to open up and tell me about his relationship with Evan, they had only been married for a short time before the accident, in that time they had lost a child Jessica Jo, and then came the plane accident. Her jet had gone down over the sea and the wreckage and remains had never been found, and what was left for him to mourn.
We both broke down that night for our own reasons. I think hearing things out loud telling another was just a little too much for us both.
This night brought Richard and me closer together, and we both felt we knew where the other was coming from.
‘ Well I better be off its very late or early which ever way ya wanna look at it’
Part of me didn’t want him to go and I felt he did not want to either. ‘ Good night Cathy, you are someone very special never forget that’.
‘ Good night Richard’ I remember an awkward kiss at my door, then he left.
‘ Oh Catherine’ I said to myself as I collected the glasses from my living area and placed them on the kitchen counter, and went to bed.
