Fictional – times dates and persons in no way reflect on real life
As we all know Karen and Richard Carpenter grew up in New Haven – among their friends was a girl of similar age. Catherine Bridge who also lived with her family in New Haven, she had not been born there as Karen and Richard had. She had been born in Brooklyn New York – what unfolds would be a world wind of a ride and a life.
You may find this story different from things that you have read by others, how close to truth some things could be, are you reading a case story for somebody’s life or how a life had been lived.
In L.A
Welcome to L.A said the Captain of the New York flight, time is 10am I hope you have had a pleasant journey please remain in your seats until the aircraft has halted.
Catherine Bridge sat in her window seat looking out on that sunny day waiting for her, waiting for a new life she had started, it started for her when she had booked her ticket not a couple of days before, after a conversation with her long time friend Karen Carpenter. Catherine got up and walked toward the door of the aircraft she could feel the L.A heat as she approached.
Once in the terminal she collected her baggage and walked through to the arrivals door.
‘Cathy over here’ that voice was so familiar, ‘Karen hi oh I am so glad you are here, where else would I be’ she replied
‘I am sorry Richard could not be here, he is in the studio he still does not like spending time in the apartment much since, well we will have lots of time to catch up’ The girls got in the car Karen drove to the Crest Tower where Catherine had rented an apartment not two days before.
The place was how shall I say – bland, however I remember walking in there with Karen – ‘oh well ya got a project here Catherine’ Karen answered already what I was thinking. ‘ By the way I got some food in for you and essentials, I knew that you would be tired and not have time’ ‘ thanks Karen I think it will take me a little time to re adjust to my new lifestyle’
‘ So tell me how is Richard’ Karens face looked concerned. ‘He is hanging in there but its been 10 months since he lost Evan’ ‘ Karen these things take a long time’ ‘ Yeah I should no look at me and Graham, but no that is a long time over’ ‘Karen your circumstances were totally different, I mean he was just a jerk, and definitely wanted money, Richard lost Evan and has nothing to mourn as nothing has ever been found’ ‘ yeah I know I just hope things get better Catherine’ ‘ They will I am sure of it’.
‘Well I am not as tired as I thought I would be so how about a little trip to the A&M studios Miss Carpenter’ ‘ I thought you would never ask’ beamed Karen.
I was so scared the first time I walked through those doors. Karen marched me right through to the soundstage. ‘ Well well Richard Carpenter there you are’ ‘ Catherine oh you are looking wonderful’ both embraced and Karen looked overjoyed to see her brother smile again.
I am here to tell you the story of my life from Air Stewardess in New York to my new life and career here in L.A where I still reside today. It is very strange looking back on those wonderful years as we started out. I do not know where to begin so forgive me if the story goes back and forth, there is so much to say, as so much happened to us.
My first meeting with Agnes and Harold after so many years. I was taken to dinner at their house with Karen and Richard, the meal was a little strained as Richard was very attentive toward me, and Agnes did not like this. I certainly was not Evan, who Agnes and grown to love and adore at all counts – I had found this out on a long distance phone conversation I had with Karen while I was still in New York. There had been sadness in her voice as she described there shopping trips and other various outings, I was saddened at the tone of her voice. During this meal several references were made about Evan with Agnes directly looking at me. I was unsure of why or what she was getting at. I was not here to stir up trouble nor was I about to jump into bed with Richard. I was here because I wanted to make a new life for myself.
Later that evening I was helping side the table taking things into the kitchen, Agnes put her hand on my arm, as I was about to leave and get another hand full. ‘ I don’t want him hurt Catherine, he needs to concentrate on his work right now, and I feel you are not going to help the situation’ Mrs Carpenter I am aware of what you are getting at however I am here to make my own career and life, I am disturbed you think that little of me’ I looked at Agnes and for a moment she looked hurt ‘ now if you excuse me I am wanted in the studio I do hope you will come and listen’.
That night Richard wanted us to hear a song that he had been made aware of. I listened as Richard sat and played the piano and Karen sang with so much feeling to ‘Reason to Believe’ after the song was over Richard handed me a hand held microphone. ‘Now lets do that again’ I was so excited the lyrics were on a stand, and Karen and I huddled around it smiling at each other and I remember feeling full of life. Well into the song I looked up to see Agnes looking back at us with a small smile on her face and I was hoping this was a little approval. Richards face had lit up as Karen and I harmonised together without a shadow of a problem. At the end of the song we were all very excited Richard shot up form the piano again we have to do this now it sounds so right. Well let’s just say that night was a late one, and there would be many more of those.
