:)hi cam..actually, my folks and friends all loved and still love Carp. music, but they don't know how crazy I am about them..if I get stuck about talking about one thing too much around here, my mom says something like"I think your mind is just too stuck on ..whatever.." so..I just enjoy what I enjoy and like to share my fascination with others through this site. Don't get me wrong, my mom is really a wonderful person and we get along fine....it's just you know...the glass is always half empty in her eyes........

Hi All, You know what's funny...Is that alot of my friends tease me endlessly about my fascination with the Carpenters. Sometimes I get a bit annoyed, and other times, I don't care. I always say to them, how come people don't mind when Elvis, John Lennon or Kurt Cobain have a fan following that adore them, and the fans are allowed to express themselves...but it's considered weird when a person adores the Carpenters. Especially a guy...but I always say, so what! How can I not appreciate that VOICE! But in the end, my friends are always the one to tell me whenever they heard the Carpenters on tv, or radio or in an article...they always tell me and that they thought of me, which kind of turns out to be sweet. My family...sometimes I feel so bad for them. I mean, I used to be sooooo obsessed...Really! (but that was the way I dealt with all my pain then...get an obsession to keep my mind busy). Like I would quiz my younger siblings endlessly...it's amazing they still talk to me now. But my Mom was good about it...buying me some Carpenters stuff. So I love her for that! And she loves the Carpenters music too...just not as much as me..
My thoughts, Cameron clongo83@hotmail.com

One of my friends teases me. For the most part when my friends hear their music they say something like; "you know that was really very good." In the 70's my sister and I used to stand in front of the stereo and sing along to singles 1969 - 1973 everyday. She and I both knew all the words to every song. On family outings we always heard their songs on the radio and we always listened to them. I remember we (my mom, dad, brother and sister) were in the van driving to the store. First they played (I forget which radio station it was) Peter Frampton's "Show Me The Way" and next was The Carpenters' "Solitaire".
The Carpenters were always enjoyed by all my family members. From 1986 to about 1991 we used to play the Yesterday Once More video at mom and dad's house every Christmas.

I know this is a very old topic, but I wasn't on the forum in 1983, so I'm going to jump in now, and perhaps generate some more interest. My parents adored Carpenters, which was why I was able to take a car and drive to Sedalia MO with a group of friends to see them at the Missouri STate Fair......that's where I got my autographs. I saw them in concert twice - how lucky AM I? ? I remember this concert like it was yesterday - they played outside, and Karen had her hair very long. She was wearing a peasant dress - very much like the one on the cover of Ticket To Ride. I don't remember what Richard was wearing - some dark suit. For an outside concert where I was up in the nosebleed section (about 40,000 people) they sounded fabulous. Just like their records. It was a 2 hour gig - and I was absolutely in heaven. Then, THEN we fought our way against the crowd. I was never this gutsy, except when it came to Carpenters - I had just happened to read in some magazine how Agnes FORCED the duo to sign autographs and be kind to their fans after shows......so I decided to see if it was true. I was so dumb - didn't bring an album or anything along, but I did remember my camera - pictures are on the board of Karen signing autographs from that concert. At any rate, I found a popcorn box on the ground, and used the INSIDE of it, and got my autographs. It was SOOOOO cool. I touched Karen that time - and she was very nice - we exchanged greetings - but didn't have a chance to talk or anything. But I remember she was wearing a ring that looked like a belt - all diamonds. She was beautiful, but very tired after having done a 2 hour gig. Bobby Goldsboro fronted them for this concert. I was a VERY happy young man that evening. I actually touched Karen's hand. I'd forgotten about that until I read this post. How sweet IS that? And, I get to share that recollection with you all. But I digress......... My family (4 brothers, mom/dad), my aunts, uncles, etc., all of whom had musical backgrounds thought very highly of the Carpenters music. I would often come in and find my albums being played on the stereo by my mom. They even made comments to me about which songs they liked best - and my mother had a lot of affection for "Don't Be Afraid." She kept comenting on the beautiful harmonies they were able to make, and how sweet their sound was. My family, including my own children by this time, were quite upset at the passing of Karen. She died on the same day my daughter almost died, by choking on a hotdog. In fact, my daughter began choking at the exact moment I was listening to the news about Karen for the first time. Needless to say, I was an absolute mess. Fortunately, my wife was steady witted enough to perform CPR on my daughter she was about to turn 5 on Feb. 7th that year) until the Paramedics arrived. They "sucked" the hotdog piece out of Jennifer's throat, and told me the Heimlick manuever I'd tried to do didn't work because I was just moving the air around the hotdog rather than being able to dislodge it. The CPR actually moved the air back in, hence saving Jennifer's life. We were blessed beyond belief to have Jennifer's life saved, yet, Karen was gone. It was a most memorable day for me, I can tell you that. I was lucky to have been surrounded by so many who liked the Carpenters. And my daughter is now 27, and living happily with her husband in St. Louis, MO. She doesn't eat hot dogs any more, though. My hurried thoughts for this post......... Best to everyone! Tim

My parents put me onto the Carpenters and they still like them and play them a fair bit, especially the Voice Of The Heart album, which my Mum is a big fan of. Karen is probably her equal favourite female singer of all time as well as Barbra Streisand, who she also put me onto. My brother and I have always been complete opposites both personality wise and in our taste in music. Him being more outgoing and liking alot of rock and alternative music, but he confessed to Mum after he moved out of home that the C's had quite grown on him and he even missed hearing them! Most of my friends don't like them as much as I do and wouldn't go out of their way to buy an album, but don't seem to think there is anything wrong with me liking them. A couple of them are pretty full on Abba fans, which can be considered equally as uncool by some! I only have one friend who used to pay out on me and make sarcastic remarks all the time, but when I asked him to actually name a Carpenters song he couldn't name any. Then oneday we were at his house and there was a music video program on and a clip of Superstar came on and I thought here we go, the sarcastic comments will start and he actually didn't say a word and hasn't since. I guess he ran out of comments once he actually heard such a great song and of course, Karens voice!

My family is pretty much in agreement with how great the Carpenters' were and still are. They don't have all the CD's and listen to them like I do, but most everyone has at least a couple of their favorites. My wife fits into the category, too. Any friend or co-worker who doesn't like them... is not my problem!

My family didn't expose me to the Carpenters, but they thought their music was so-so.
Circa 1995, I found a copy of the Carpenters Video Collection and I made my friend Ryan a copy. However, I stuck Beavis and Butthead clips between each music video song, and he thought that was a trip.
The few friends I had, they all love the Carpenters. Most of them do. Since I was listening to them a lot during that year, that is why I mentioned the Carps in my book that I started. The very one that just got published.
