Hi All,
Well I know that on a lot of the videos they were lipsynching but I don't think a lot of people had a problem with that. I think back then, people just naturally accepted it, and didn't make too much of a fuss. Plus, when Karen did sing "live", she sang it almost exactly like her recorded album version. Not many artists were able to reproduce their album versions, but the Carpenters were one of the few acts to do it practically perfect.
I always wonder though...if the videos where they show Karen in the recording studio...like All You Get From Love Is A Love Song (neat to see Karen having fun), or Only Yesterday(at the beginning...you see an extremely thin Karen but singing like an angel), if these were actual recording clips, or if they were just for the video?
I love the video Superstar...the sombre feel to it. The darkness...her purple outfit is nice...she really sings well in that song...(even though it is the recorded version you hear).
I know that they could reproduce and recreate their sound. On the BBC special done in 1971...Their songs are all sung "LIVE", with the exception I think of the Bachararch/David medley, and Help(not sure). But the "LIVE" songs they do do are almost flawless...(except Close To You, where Richard makes a mistake on one of the keys, and Karen looks at him strangely cuz even she notices it, but continues on flawlessly)...
Even on most of their TV Specials and TV GUEST appearances, they lipsync...although on their 1976 Tv special, they do some spots LIVE...
I wonder on the Medley they do...where Karen jumps from one mike to another...that they might have gone in and re-recorded some of the background vocals and even one or two leads...so that Karen would still sing Live and in LEAD...
I remember the songs they did...Beechwood 4-5789 and Touch Me When We're Dancing...at A&M Studios, which was televised by satellite to Japan telethon, I think. Well they were all lipsynching...and then they kind of got caught and Karen was saying, "It's not my fault!" Then she went and sang a bit of..."Touch me...when we're dancing...you know you've got that loving....Loving touch...woah...touch me when we're dancing..." That was cute...and they should have carried on singing LIVE and impromptu but Karen finally gives up. This is when she is wearing that infamous Yellow outfit used for the People magazine cover.
Does anyone ever have the tv appearance of Karen singing Bless The Beasts and the Children on the Academy Award? That would be cool to hear.
Also, didn't she sing live to Superstar and We've Only Just Begun at the Grammys?
Oh yeah, when Karen did lip synch though, she did a great job! And Richard too!
My jumbled thoughts...
