With this story I am attempting to answer the question; "What would Karen be like had she never suffered with Anorexia?" I'm going to try to show a different side of Karen. Quite possibly a side of Karen that did exist but could have been trapped inside the torment of her disease. In this story Karen weighs a normal 120 pounds just months before her 29th birthday.
This story is completely fictional. None of the dates coincide with any actual events. With the exception of January 10, 1979 when Karen along with her (and Richard's) attorney Werner Wolfen and manager Jerry Weintraub flew a private lear jet with Richard to Topeka, Kansas. This is where Richard stayed to get treatment for his addiction to quaaludes.
Now we cut to Topeka, Kansas where Karen is saying goodbye to Richard.
"California won't be the same without you RC. I'll miss you. But you're doing the right thing."
"Yes, I know I am", Richard responds, "I know I need this. I feel so dumb for letting it get this far."
"Oh Richard", Karen nudges up closer to him, "you are not dumb. You're a genius and you're going to get better."
"I know, I know", Richard says with a worried look on his face, "What's going to happen with Carpenters. People will forget us if we don't put out an album this year."
"Richard, that's ridiculous. There's no way people can ever forget us", Karen speaks as she looks Richard in the eyes. "Look at all the hits we've had. And there is so much more on the horizon. You'll see."
"But what will you do while I'm gone?" You should take a nice long vacation. Pamper yourself. Get some well deserved R&R."
"Well, Richard. I need to talk with you about that. I've been talking with Herb about recording a solo album. He's encouraging me to do this. And I've decided I'm going to do it."
"What? Without me?" Richard hurriedly asks. "I get sick and you're ready to jump ship."
"Richard, this is important to me. I want to try something new and different." Karen pauses and looks at Richard, "I need your blessings on this. I need to know you're okay with me doing a solo album."
Richard looked at Karen with tears in his eyes. "Karen, Karen. Yes, you have my blessings. But please promise me you won't do any disco."
