Rick, you have such great memories attached to your music! That is super!!
The funny thing about music (for me and I suspect a lot of people) is that it is easy to attach memories to it. A fact I wish I would have know in my school years. I think I can learn just about anything if I put it to music. Just take a catchy tune or a beautiful melody and fill in the information that needs to be learned!

That is a very impressive collection indeed that you have- I guess you must have musical background accompaniment to many of your regular activities. I smiled when I saw John Denver's "Calypso" on one of your compilations; that was one of my favorites of the many great numbers of yet another artist we lost too soon. Having every top 40 hit of the 70's sure gives you much opportunity to experience again the whole range of human emotions and make you more useful in relating to people invarious situations. One of my other favorite 70's songs was called "Please Come To Boston", by Dave Loggins. Please Come To Boston is a GOOD song. The fellow is 'searching' for himself (going from place to place trying to find somewhere to belong)...and the whole time his other half is keeping him grounded...and safe(come home). J. Denver's Calypso was also one of my favorites. I love 'sailing' songs!

I also love sailing tunes - such as Carpenters' "Sailing On The Tide" and "Boat To Sail" - I absolutely love the stcked vocals on "Boat To Sail".
Just to add a few other artists I've collected extensively - Manhattan Transfer, k.d. lang, Joe Henry, Bryan Adams, Poor Old Lu, DC Talk, Tree63, U2, Depeche Mode, Michael Franks, Genesis, Klaatu, Kinks, Gladys Kinght, Lene Lovich, Police, Diana Ross, Supertramp, Styx and many others.

Here is a listing of the songs on my newest Pop Song compilation. This is Volume 31.
Heroes And Villians - Beach Boys 1967 (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction - Cat Power 1999 Too Much - Elvis Presley 1957 Lost In The Fifties Tonight - Ronnie Milsap 1985 The Boxer - Simon and Garfunkel 1969 Missing You - Dan Fogelberg 1982 Mysterious Days - Sarah Brightman 2003 I Saw A Man And He Danced With His Wife - Cher 1974 Feelin' Stronger Everyday - Chicago 1973 Ordinary Fool - Carpenters 1983 That's Life - Frank Sinatra 1966 Through The Eyes Of Love - Melissa Manchester 1979 It's Only Make Believe - Glen Campbell 1970 Carefree Highway - Gordon Lightfoot 1974 Love's a game - The Magic Numbers 2005 Play Me - Neil Diamond 1972 Bird Dog - Everly Brothers 1958 Holiday - Bee Gees 1967 Thank You - Dido 1999 Blue Bayou - Roy Orbison 1963 Beautiful - Carole King 1971
Notes on some of the songs:
Heroes And Villians - Beach Boys 1967 - this is amongst my favorite Beach Boys songs. Others I love are "Good Vibrations", "Wouldn't It Be Nice", "Don't Worry Baby" and "In My Room".
(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction - Cat Power 1999 - Cat Power is American singer/songwriter Chan Marshall. Chan is known for her minimalist folk influenced style, sparse guitar and piano playing and her delightfully ethereal vocals.
In her version of the Rolling Stones' "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" Chan completely reworks the songs turning it into something completely different. What she did works beautifully. Chan turns the rocking song into a delicate ballad completely leaving out the repititious chorus in which Mick Jagger sings, "I can't get no satisfaction I can't get no satisfaction 'Cause I try and I try and I try and I try I can't get no, I can't get no". Chan sings only the verses such as "When I'm drivin' in my car and that man comes on the radio and he's tellin' me more and more about some useless information supposed to fire my imagination". This effect of singing only the verses without the hooky chorus is outstanding. The song in Chan Marshall's eyes is now a silky smooth folk song which is very pleasing to listen to. Chan recorded this song for her fifth album "The Covers Record".
Lost In The Fifties Tonight - Ronnie Milsap 1985 - Ronnie Milsap is one of the great male vocalists of the 70's and 80's. This is a great tune in that part of the song includes bits of the Five Satins' "In the Still Of the Night" as Milsap remembers how they used to dance to these old tunes and he added some extra words to describe these days, making a "medley" of sorts. The song was a #1 country music hit in 1985.
The Boxer - Simon and Garfunkel 1969 - Has always been a major favorite.
Missing You - Dan Fogelberg 1982 - Fogelberg is also another one of the great singer/songwriters of our time.
Mysterious Days - Sarah Brightman 2003 - I love the very contemporary sound of this song. Brightman proves shes more than a "classical" music diva. Brightman rocks in a modern way with this song and the others from the fantastic album "Harem".
I Saw A Man And He Danced With His Wife - Cher 1974 - I'm not a big fan of Cher's voice - but she does have about a good 20 songs or more that I like spanning from 1967 to 2003.
Feelin' Stronger Everyday - Chicago 1973 - An ultimate favorite by one of my favorite bands.
Ordinary Fool - Carpenters 1983 - What can I say - sheer beauty.
Love's A Game - The Magic Numbers 2005 - Critics have compared the Magic Numbers to the Mamas and Papas. Although Magic Numbers do contain some of those great harmonies which made mamas and Papas famous - they still do not even come close to Mamas and Papas - though Magic Numbers is a pretty good modern pop band for the new millenium.
Bird Dog - Everly Brothers 1958 - A fun sing-along type song.
Holiday - Bee Gees 1967 - The Bee Gees were much more than just disco. In the late sixties and early seventies they had a slew of wonderful pop hits including "Holiday", "I Started A Joke", "To Love Somebody", "How Can You Mend A Broken Heart" and my favorite Bee Gees tune, "Lonely Days".
Thank You - Dido 1999 - Smooth and ethereal. dido is one of the finest female vocalist on today's music scene. This is just another great tune by the songstress.
Blue Bayou - Roy Orbison 1963 - Roy orbison is easily one of the all-time great male vocalists. He has one of the most soulfully beautiful voices ever. I much prefer this version of "Blue Bayou" over Linda Ronstadt's.

Another interesting mix, Rick. There are several songs listed here that I really enjoy. Some of the versions, like that from Cat Power, I haven't even heard.
Do you have a theme in mind when you create your mixes or do you just pick songs that are upper most in your mind at the time?

In this collection (which this thread is about) thew theme is pop and/or easy going music. I always include one Carpenters/Karen song. I also try to include songs from a span of decades -as you'll notice on this latest collection I have songs from 1957 to 2005. I try and rotate the artists. I generally do not include the same artists on back to back discs (with the exception of Carpenters). If you look at the list of songs on volume 30 and 31 - there aren't any repeat artists.

Beechwood 4-5789 - Carpenters 1982Belief - John Mayer 2006- Mayer has been a regular in my disc player for this past five years. This is typical John Mayer from his most recent CD release. Love Will Find A Way - Pablo Cruise 1978 - This song was one of my favorite tunes from the late 70's. It has a certain pulse to the rhythm. Great tune. I also enjoy "Whatcha Gonna Do" and "Don't want to Live Without It" by Pablo Cruise. Another thing I liked about Pablo Cruise is that they recorded for A&M Records. Get On Your Feet - Gloria Estefan 1989 - A fun upbeat tune by Gloria Estefan. 24 Miles, Santa Catalina - Four Preps 1958 - This is a great vocal song which I've always related to - since I live pretty close to Balboa Beach - which is one of the ports that's ships to Catalina Island. I've taken the boat ride over once - and it really is a fun and beautiful sunny place. Giant - I'll See You In My Dreams 1990 - Typical early 90's ballad. Nothing too exciting - but is a good listen. ABBA - S.O.S. 1975 - Great upbeat pop tune from 1975 - which is one of my favorite years for music. This is the same year Carpenters' "Horizon" was released. S'Wonderful - Diana Krall 2001 - From Krall's 2001 album "The Look Of Love". This is a great mellow smooth jazz rendition of the song. I really enjoy Krall's husky voice. Fly Me To The Moon - Frank Sinatra 1964 - Great tune - recorded by many. You're The One - Jennifer Warnes 1977 - This is the same song which Carpenters recorded also in 1977 and was finally released on the posthumous compilation "Lovelines". Warnes does a pleasant and understated rendition of the song. I really like Warnes' voice. Biggest Part Of Me - Ambrosia 1980 - This is one of the greatest love songs of all-time. I truly love this song. The lyric is fantastic and the lead vocalist is excellent. In The Crossfire - Starsailor 2005 - Starsailor has had several hits in the past five years including "Good Souls" and "Silence Is Easy". This song is typical of Starsailor - but as always a good listen. Back In Baby's Arms - Patsy Cline 1962 - I love Patsy Cline, she ranks amongst the greatest female vocalists of all time. Her voice is rich and full-bodied. A Word In Spanish - Elton John 1988 - One of Elton's lesser hits - nothing real exciting - but still a good listen. Call Me When You Get This - Corinne Bailey Rae 2006 - Corinne Bailey Rae has a wonderful and unique voice. she's one of those voices that comes around only once every ten years or so. she has a smooth and easily recognizable style. I have a feeling she will be around a while. Every Night - Phoebe Snow 1975 - Again from 1975 the year of "Horizon" and "Only Yesterday" by Carpenters as well as Elton John's "Philadelphia Freedom" and Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here". Phoebe Snow has a wonderful soulful and husky voice. Snow does a great rendition of this Paul McCartney tune. Just Once In My Life - Righteous Brothers 1965 - Nice vocals. We Were Meant To Be Lovers - Jim Photoglo 1980 - This is a wonderful and catchy love song, with a slight bit of an upbeat rhythm. I always thought Jim Photoglo would go on to have several hits. Sand In My Shoes - Dido 2003 - Great tune. Dido is one of my favorites, she has a beautifully smooth and unique voice. I love the rhythm and tempo in her songs. The lyric in this song is specially good. New Shoes - Paolo Nutini 2007 - Paolo Nutini is the most exciting new artist of the year. He has a great voice. "New Shoes" is a great upbeat pop tune - that you can actually dance to. 1900 Yesterday - Liz Damon's Orient Express 1970 - This is very mellow - almost reminds me of the Mike Curb Congregation. Great tune with spurts of 70's guitar. Beechwood 4-5789 - Carpenters 1982 - What can I say. This is a great upbeat rendition of a Marvelettes tune from the 60's. Carpenters put their own spin to it. Tony Peluso's electric guitar solo in the middle is my favorite part of the song.
