$% This thread is started because of a conversation in the 70's board. enigma asked about the songs on a compilation disc I made for myself. This particular disc was made on October 30, 2004. It's volume 24 in a series of pop music compilations I've made. I make a new one every four or five months. Other compilations I make are Progressive Rock, Classic Rock, Dance Club Hits, Today's Music, New Wave Hits, and R&B Soul hits. Anyway this one Pop Songs volume 24 includes: 1. Don't Think... Feel - Neil Diamond 1976 2. The American Popular Song - Neil Diamond 1978 3. You Don't Bring Me Flowers - Barbra Streisand (Babs solo) 1978 4. (I Believe) There's Nothing Stronger Than Our Love - Paul Anka and Odia coates 1975 5. Toes - Norah Jones 2004 6. You And Me - Alice Cooper 1977 7. Wish You Were Here - Barbara Mandrell 1981 8. Still The Lovin' Is Fun - B.J. Thomas 1977 9. Heart Of Gold - Neil Young 1972 10. Sunshine - Keane 2004 11. If Not For You - Olivia Newton-John 1971 12. Guess I Just Lost My Head - Karen Carpenter 1996 (1980) 13. Dust In The Wind - Sarah Brightman 1998 14. Part-Time Love - Elton John 1978 15. Santa Cruz - The Thrills 2003 16. :-/This "box" of "threads"....hasn't been opened in a long time, ..that's because there is so many fantastic places to visit on the site...which is a good thing. Anyway, yes, I love your compilation of songs Rick although, some I might know if I heard them but off-hand I don't. I will comment to say you hit a good nerve of mine when you have "You and Me" by A. Cooper...he should have come up with more I guess "tamer" songs like that...but I know his true nature is pretty interesting and spooky ...ha.. The song "You and Me" by him, I haven't heard in ages... one day, I'll have to get an ipod ... anyway, that song always reminds me of another song which came out about the same time I think..but, I don't know who sung it maybe the name of it was "Magnet and Steel" " you are the magnet and i am the steel...oooh...ah" .. ::)also, who sings an oldie "Mrs. (I forget who) you've got a lovely daughter..." ...a very British group...with a banjo.. I think I'll come up with a list...

"Magnet And Steel" was recorded by Walter Egan and was released around the same time as the Alice Cooper song.
Here is the list of my most current pop songs compilation. It's Volume 29 and I assmebled this compilation on may 11, 2006. Here is the track list:

Right Down The Line - Gerry Rafferty 1978
These compilations generally take me about 2 1/2 hours to burn on to CD. They're generally about 78 minutes long. I try to use songs from different decades. Here's a breakdown of songs from each decade on Volume 29 which is listed in the quote above:
60's - 2 songs 70's - 11 songs (my pop collections contain more 70's songs than any other decade80's - 3 songs 90's - 1 song 00's - 4 songs
Lately I've been making compilations on British artists. The first one I called "The British Invasion", the second is called "Here Come The Brits" - these include artists from the 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's and current decade. I'll share some of these compilations with you in another thread.
btw: Kathy the British sounding song you asked about called; "Mrs. Brown You've Got A Lovely Daughter" is by herman's Hermits and is from 1965.

;DI was pretty sure it was "Mrs. Brown you have a lovely daughter"...I know I truly would love to be able to work and collect music as you do Rick. As the song goes,"Without a song, the day would never end.." The way you describe your collections , the categories, sounds like quite a job, but I know it must be a great hobby.

Hi Wisejester... oh yes, I have a crazy huge collection of music. I own something like 7,000 vinyl albums, 3,500 seven inch singles, 300 cassettes and around 3,500 CD's. I currently buy an average of 15 CD's a month - so needless to say my collection is growing steadily.
Enigma has also mentioned that he has quite a large collection of music.
Unique about my collection is that I own every single song which reached the top 40 in the 70's (1970 - 1979). I also own entire catalogs of artists who were popular in the 70's such as Carpenters, Led Zeppelin, Doors, Chicago, ELO, Stevie Wonder, David Bowie, Eagles, Earth Wind And Fire, Peter Frampton, Crystal Gayle, Barbara Mandrell, Dolly Parton, Hall And Oates, Blondie, Kinks, Klaatu, Pink Floyd, Paul McCartney and Wings, John Lennon, George Harrison, Ringo Starr, Moody Blues, Queen, Steely Dan, Talking Heads, Roxy Music, Brian Eno, Neil Young and others...
My primary genre of music is male vocal classic rock and modern rock (such as Coldplay, U2 and Dave Matthews Band). Though somehow the voice of Karen Carpenter has made the biggest impression on me.
Female artists I absolutely love are Norah Jones, Diana Krall, Sade, Donna Summer, Roberta Flack, Crystal Gayle, Kate Bush, Sarah Brightman, Cat Power (Chan Marshall), Julieta Venegas...

How did you win these? A radio contest?

I meant to write "own" not "won" - I've went back to my original post and changed it to "own".
From 1977 until around 1987 I was buying something like 50 - 60 albums a month. I slowed down for a while and then in 1996 I bought my first CD player and began buying about 25 CD's a month - as mentioned before now I buy around 15 a month - so I've tapered down a bit - mainly because of the room my collection takes up. I am currently working on reorganizing my collection and buying some cabinets which has extra doors on the to hold more pieces.

That is a very impressive collection indeed that you have- I guess you must have musical background accompaniment to many of your regular activities. I smiled when I saw John Denver's "Calypso" on one of your compilations; that was one of my favorites of the many great numbers of yet another artist we lost too soon. Having every top 40 hit of the 70's sure gives you much opportunity to experience again the whole range of human emotions and make you more useful in relating to people invarious situations. One of my other favorite 70's songs was called "Please Come To Boston", by Dave Loggins.

Hi O.E.... yes it is a great experience going down memory lane with my collection of 70's records. I remember different instances when I hear many of these songs.
Such as when I hear "Lady Marmalade" by LaBelle I think of my first year in high school - during lunch the music was playing over the loud speakers and on came "Lady Marmalade".
The Ten CC song "I'm Not In Love" makes me think of my high school friend Janet - she absolutely loved this song.
"Please Mr. Postman" by the Carpenters reminds me of high school also. It was gym class - we were sitting on the bleachers as the coach was explaining our activities of the day a teenager walked by with his gigantic boom box and "Please Mr. Postman" was blasting out of it - it was the first time I heard the song and I just knew right then and there the song was destined to be #1.
"Bohemian Rhapsody" by Queen reminds me of my friend Garrett - I hung out with him and his sister one summer vacation away from high school - they were tons of fun - and usually there was a group of a dozen of us listening to music - Garrett made sure to play "Bohemian Rhapsody" everytime.
"Anticipation" by Carly Simon and "American Pie" by Don McLean both remind me of a neighbor friend named Cammy she loved both songs and one afternoon she and I sat on the curb singing ... bye bye Miss American Pie... ahhh such memories.
There are so many many others to share memories of.
p.s. I also love Dave Loggins' "Please Come To Boston" - what a great tune - what a classic.
