Here's another round with two major heavy hitters.
"I Am... I Said" by Neil Diamond reached #4 in April 1971. This million seller, Diamond claims, is an autobiographical lyric on his life up to that point.
"Your Song" by Elton John reached #8 in the later part of January 1971. This was one of the first songs John wrote with Bernie Taupin. Taupin lived in Elton John's parents' house for a while, there they wrote several songs. "Your Song" was written in 1967. Taupin was 17. Taupin wrote this over breakfast at John's parents' house. The original lyrics have coffee stains on them. Elton wrote the music in about 20 minutes, as he often did with Taupin's lyrics in their early days.
Which one is your favorite?

I voted a BIG yes to Elton John's 'Your Song'. There is something basic and wonderful about the message the song conveys ... and the music isn't bad, either. ;-)

My vote also goes to Elton John's "Your Song". This is one of Elton's best in his entire catalog - as well as being one of the very best songs of the entire 70's.

I voted for Neil Diamond, just because his song(s) is not played a great deal, like most any of Elton John's. I think that if you look past some of the sequins and stuff Diamond is into, that you can see a very good musician. Elton John showed a mature musical style a a way younger age, though.

It's a tough decision between these singer/songwriters.
Neil Diamond's "I am I said" is a deep, searching song about a confounding sense of personal alienation and rootlessness whereas Elton John/Bernie Taupin's "Your Song" is a refreshingly eloquent but simple song on love and dedication. I especially like the line "I hope you don't mind that I put down in words/How wonderful life is while you're in the world."
I am going with "Your Song" by just a hair.
