This round features two classic ballads "Killing me Softly (with His Song) by Roberta Flack and "Neither One Of Us (Wants To Be The First To Say Goodbye)" by Gladys Kinght and the Pips.
"Killing me Softly (with His Song) by Roberta Flack - Written in tribute to Don McLean ("American Pie"). Originally recorded by Lori Lieberman in 1971. After being mesmerized by one of his concerts at the Troubadour theater in Los Angeles, Lieberman described what she saw of McLean's performance to Norman Gimbel and Charles Fox, who were writing songs for her new album, and they wrote the song for her. This song won three Grammy Awards for Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Performance by a Female. The song was #1 for 5 weeks from February 24 to March 17, 1973 and March 31, 1973. The song was certified Gold for selling over a million copies.
"Neither One Of Us (Wants To Be The First To Say Goodbye)" by Gladys Kinght and the Pips - This million selling mega-hit was #2 for 2 weeks on April 7 & 14, 1973. This song won one Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Performance by a Duo, Group or Chorus.
Which is your favorite?

Ouch! Now you've done it. I love Gladys Knight and the Pips ... and you threw her up against the only song I know Roberta Flack for. But what a song! I heard Karen would have loved to have been offered this song to sing ... and I'm sure she could have wrapped her heart and soul (and ours) around this song. So, I'm voting for Killing Me Softly.

Wisejester7... Yes, I try and make these tough choices. Both songs are fantastic. As for Robeta Flack I'm sure you've heard her other fabulous classics such as "The Closer I Get To You" (duet w/ Donny Hathaway), "Where Is The Love" (another duet w/ Hathaway) "That's The Time I Feel Like Makin' Love To You", and the sublime "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face".
I will come back with my choice as I am as yet undecided.

Yikes! You're right, Rick. I know all of those songs. Now that you mention it, was it 'Killing Me Softly' or 'The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face' that Karen wanted to sing?
My memory must be on holiday already. ;-)

I truly love both beautiful songs - but my vote has to go with Roberta Flack's "Killing Me Softly" - what a classic amongst the classics. Flack sang this one with so much soul and intensity - I have always loved this one.
Wisejester7... yes it was "Killing Me Softly" which Karen wanted to sing. Although, she would have also done a fantastic job with "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face".

Not much of a contest on this one Roberta Flack easily won out for me. Dispite a great choice by Gladys Knight Roberta Flack just kills this song no pun intended I was and still am really impressed by Robertas handling of this song I can't imagine Karen or anyone doing a better job but who knows Karen may have bettered Roberta. Anyhow she never got the chance so my vote goes to Killing Me Softly With His Song a emotionally powerful great song as far as I am concerned.

At this point it's unanimous in our choice for "Killing me Softly". I will keep this round open one more day to give others the opportunity to vote.
