I just received "Carpenters Perform Carpenter" in the mail today - great to hear so much of Richard's music and John Bettis' lyrics on one album.
It made me think back to the two occasions I saw the Carpenters live in London. Once at the London Palladium and at the Royal Festival Hall - magic! We all associate those multi-track harmonies with studio production but to hear Karen's voice 'live' was wonderful.
If she had lived longer, I would have loved to have seen her produce an 'unplugged' album. Just Richard at the piano and that rich expressive voice being used as a vehicle for some great standards as well as songs by, say, Norah Jones and the guys that write with her.
Oh well, we must be thankful for what we've got - "Sometimes, not often enough we reflect upon the good times..."

Hello, I think when Karen sang live, she was unbelievable...i mean, she could sing!! That girl HAD talent!! I think what impresses is me is that voice in the studio, and on her albums...but to see her live would be pure heaven!! I saw the BBC in 1971 video and she sings flawlessly at FOR ALL WE KNOW, SOMETIMES, RAINY DAYS AND MONDAYS, SUPERSTAR, CLOSE TO YOU, WE'VE ONLY JUST BEGUN, MR. GUDER, LOVE IS SURENDER...her live performances just blew me away...her phrasing...everything!! That is a GREAT SINGER!!! And that she drums away while singing like an angel!!! Is astounding!!

I have a live recording of "I Need to Be In Love". Karen sings this flawlessly. She reaches each note perfectly. It's amazing!
