WOW! What a week it's been! Okay, let me start off by saying a GREAT BIG THANKS again to Rick Henry for the wonderful update of Carpenters Online. Rick, you've really outdone yourself this month. Everything looks wonderful. I'm especially fond of your "Carpenters Collection" photo, knowing it is but a mere smidgeon of the memoribalia you have in your collection. It's really cool, though. I like it. How is everyone, anyway? Hoping everyone is well, and feeling energized, knowing the holidays are just around the corner. It's been a tense week for me, and for our forum friend, singer-songwriter Palma Pascale. This all started about 3-4 weeks ago. Palma wrote to say she was a "mess" and had been feeling rather off the charts for a time. But she was sort of watching and waiting to determine what might be happening. Then, of course, she wasn't getting any better, and the tension began mounting. She did go and see her doctor. We'd been in close contact all week this week, and it was Wednesday night when she contacted me to let me know she was going to have to have surgery this week upcoming. I'm going to give you the "positive" pieces of this story, as Palma requested today. I knew there were several of you who wanted to know what was going on, as I eluded to her being ill earlier, and she told me she would welcome, of course, everyone's thoughts and prayers. And, that they were all appreciated. So, here's the positive part of things. There has apparently been a tip-off of a larger problem. Palma's brother (a medical professional) indicated to her that this type of thing is normally NOT diagnosed in this early of a stage, as there is NO WARNING SIGNS to point to it. Fortunately, all of this discomfort was happening, sending her for care, finding the problem, and getting it corrected in the very, very early stages of its development. That news is much better than the first-blush indications of Wednesday evening. I spoke to Palma on the phone that night, and she was pretty frightened. Today, however, Palma asked me to say hello to everyone and give you her very best, and to let you know that she'll be back making music very soon. This surgery will interrupt a session that she is in the midst of with a fellow from New York who is making a Christmas CD, of which Palm is producing, and accompanying him on. His name is Frank Rendo. I have several of the rough mixes, and can tell you that Frank is a true tenor, and has a really nice voice. Palma is embellishing his voice nicely with her arrangements. Palma, we all wish you well, and know that the surgery will take care of the problem, so you can get back to doing what you do best very quickly ~ that is, making music. Palma will be at Winthrop University Hospital there in New York. I'll post her room number, etc., once I know and hear from Fred Guarino, who will be keeping me (and subsequently you) posted on the surgery, and how Palm is doing through it all. Thanks, Fred. Gosh........Sunday night, already! Where DOES the time go, anyway? I have a new client who is interested in coming on board with our business that I'll need to get ready for tomorrow - lots of figures and charts and graphs, and gathering of information, etc. It's an exciting thing when a new business wants to learn about employee leasing and how that can benefit them. When they find out, they're usually very excited, so that will be keeping me busy. Also, I got some backing tracks this week from a good friend, who I can now duet with, at least, here in town when I play. That good friend is our own Leo Tarring....and I'm excited as Leo and I "dueted" last week in my music room, although he was actually 3,000 miles away. But it was fun, and the tunes are excellent. Thanks Leo. As I said, this is a gas, and I'm enjoying working with you! And, does anyone else on the forum watch The Gilmore Girls? Actually, Ann and I watched a season or two some years ago, then got too busy...but of late, we've borrowed our daughters "seasons" collections, and have made it through season 2 by now. What a GREAT show. It's always fun, though sometimes the subject is rather serious - it's cute, and the banter between mother Loralei and daughter Rory is just unbelievably fun. That's why I watch it. I tell you, it reminds me in a way of what M*A*S*H* used to be, with the banter between BJ and Hawkeye....or Northern Exposure, and the banter there between O'Connel and Fleishman or the great Moonlighting and that marvelous banter between David and Maddie. Some great shows, these. I think Gilmore Girls is just a delightful way to wind-down after a long, and sometimes difficult day, and I would recommend watching the previous season CD's anytime you got the chance as a good dose of laughter medicine. What a HOOT! Well everyone, take good care of yourselves, and check in from time to time. I'll keep you as posted as I can about Palma - remember, she sends her love and all her best. She says when the surgery is over, and the "basketball" is gone, so she can actually reach the keyboard again (Oofah!)....she'll be in touch. Ooooooo - how bout this - we'll make a GET WELL ONLINE CARD FOR HER - HOW BOUT THAT? I'll start a new thread right here in Tim's Corner. Take it easy....Enjoy the fall....and remember, I wish you all the best from here in my corner, Tim

Hi Ming! Yes, I truly enjoy celebrating Christmas with my family. So tell us, is your family close to you? Do you celebrate with them? Does your family get together for holidays generally? Do you have a large or a small family? How many brothers or sisters do you have, if any? How will you spend Thanksgiving and Christmas? Yes, my family is close to me. We like to get together during different holidays. The most important festival in our culture is the Chinese New Year. We visit each others' home and say lucky things such as 'Kung Hei Fat Choy'. I have one brother who is 5 years older than me. In Hong Kong, we don't celebrate Thanksgiving, but we celebrate Christmas. We will go to a restaurant and eat some food. Ming

Tim, Thanks for your initiative in keeping us posted on Palma- I am sure many of us will be in prayer and happily sign the card. I hope the client meeting goes well. When a person's work is something of genuine interest to them (and that sounds like the case with you), it makes it much more fulfilling. Music is a true passion with you too, and may you have abounding time and opportunity to work with Leo and othes in coming months. I used to watch Gilmore Girls regularly for the first couple seasons it was on, and still see it occasionally. I agree that the witty, rapid-fire dialogue is the strength of the show- in recent years some of the actions of the characters have turned me off a little (OK, I know it's just TV.) Today it's almost 70 degrees in Chicago- hope Jon got a chance to enjoy it some.
Ming- what are some of the foods normally eaten at Christmas in Hong Kong, and some of the other traditions?

Ming- what are some of the foods normally eaten at Christmas in Hong Kong, and some of the other traditions? Hello ps11932, I think the food we eat in Christmas is basically western food. Nearly every restaurant offer Christmas meals during Christmas. In other traditions, for example, Mid-Autumn Festival(which is on 15/8 of the Lunar Calendar), we eat mooncake which I like very much. But mooncake is not very healthy because the calories of 1 mooncake equals to 4 bowls of rice! Ming

Hi Ming, I guess the mooncake, which a person certainly couldn't eat regularly, helps make the Mid-Autumn festival a special occasion. Here, the Thanksgiving Day celebration often turns into a feast that becomes unhealthy just by volume- but those who can gather with family, include those without family, and (in most cases) have a good and joyful time.

Yes. I agree with you. Mooncake has a special meaning. It means family staying together. Sorry for making a mistake in my last post, I have just changed it. It should be 4 bowls of rice, not 16. It is still a lot of calories, but as you say, because mooncake makes Mid-Autumn Festival a special occasion, it is alright to eat mooncakes. Also, it is very tasty too. Ming

Thanks for the clarification. The calories of 4 bowls of rice is still a large amount but only 25% of 16, making it even more reasonable to enjoy the mooncake as a special treat. (In 1972, I once at 16 scoops of ice cream at once- I was just a teen-ager then, but it probably wasn't the wisest thing I ever did.)

Isn't this great? We're getting to learn about culture from Ming, and I love it. Thank you Ming, for answering our questions. It's fascinating - I had no idea you didn't actually celebrate Thanksgiving, and that typically there is Western fare available as your celebratory food at Christmas. The phrase you all say to each other, Kung Hei Fat Choy sounds like a wonderful greeting...full of fun and good wishes, and Mmmmmm, doesn't the mooncake sound just scrumptious? Yummie, as they say here, Ming. Thanks so for sharing that information with us. I was delighted to hear that you DO get together with your family - it's so nice to be near your family, especially during the holidays, right? And, do you and your brother get to see each other very often, or just at holidays? How great that you have a brother. Were you two close growing up, like "buddies" or something? Again, thanks for sharing. I am so glad to know that you and your family will be "Together at Christmas, again" as the song title goes. Good for you, Ming. Let's see....wj7, tell us the latest on your father. Does he seem to be regaining his strength more and more each day? I know it's a long, lengthy process, but as long as there is forward, positive progress happening, then that's what counts...our prayers ARE being answered, eh? Remember, patience, too, is a virtue...it obtains all things. Hoping to hear that he is doing better and better by the day, and that the storm you're weathering will soon have one of these at the end ..... O.E., for your kind words. You always know just the right touch of inspiration to add to this dialogue we have here. I love reading about your growing knowledge of Carpenters and their music, and your insights are fresh and inspiring. Thanks for checking in and keeping us posted on happenings in your world. Yes, Jon did get to enjoy some of that wonderful warm weather, in between his 8 to 5, and finishing up with helping to record Iggy Pop and the Stooges..... I'm so pleased so many are joining in on the conversation here in Tim's Corner. Rick, I owe you an email, and will try and get around to that this evening. I thought I might be on my way to So Cal in the next week, but instead I'll stay here and try to hold down the fort, as they say. We'll meet up one day soon. And Enigma and Palma celebrate birthdays today. Happy birthday to both of you. I have truly learned a great deal from Enigma during the almost 3 years I've been on the forum. He is a wealth of knowledge. Thanks, E....I'm so pleased we've met here, and I continue to grow in my "Carpenters" knowledge, thanks to folks like YOU. Enigma I spoke with Palma by phone this evening...she had sent me some not so great news last night, but was in good spirits tonight, and we laughed and chatted about a lot of things. Rick, Palma specifically asked me to thank you for the "opportunity" to be part of this family, and to tell everyone she appreciates the sentiments of the day, only she's just not using the computer much. It's difficult for her at this point, and she is uncomfortable until she gets this surgery, etc., out of the way, the computer has pretty much just gone by the wayside.....but, she did want me to convey her thanks and give everyone her love, and she appreciates not only the birthday wishes, but the love and prayers A GREAT DEAL.....especially the prayers at this point. She asked that we keep them positive, and that we keep them coming. I assurred her we would do just that. I was happy to hear her laugh, knowing that what's in store could be a number of things. However, I think we did conclude she is going to be FINE....it may take a while, based on everything she is learning as each day passes - nevertheless, she has great friends and people to help her there in Long Island, and she knows she has this community of people here at COL thinking of her as well. She told me she decided not to "hold up" in the house, so went shopping, to the post office, etc., today, and she's feeling as good as she can, under the circumstances. We DO hope it's been a great day for you, Palm..... To YOU, Palma Oh yeah, I'll also be revising my reviews and putting them up in the next couple of weeks on Palma's new WEBSITE, which is now up and running (who knew?) Creative Soul are the folks who created it, and it seemingly went live this week some time.......I'm not sure Palma knew it was going to, but alas....it's out there and you can find it at (this is tough to remember, you might wanna write it down) I'M JUST KIDDING!!!!! The url is www.palmapascale.com Duh! Really tough, yes? Told you I was KIDDING...... AND.......DRUM ROLL....... Guess what arrived in my office today? Yup, you got it in one....MY NEW HIGH POWERED CPU that I will begin using to RECORD with!! Yowsah!!!! I'm SO extremely excited about that (and It's not even MY birthday, nor nuttin!) Wow - this thing is HUGE, and I'll bring it home with me tomorrow.....got the monitor and keyboard all set up, just waiting. I still have to install the recording software, which Jon happens to have in Chicago, however....the CPU has been completely cleared (hard drive), and reloaded with "Windows ME" just in case I want to use it for word processing, email, etc., along with recording music. This, my friends, is truly, an answer to prayer. I have two CD ports that I can burn CD's once I've recorded onto the hard drive, so making copies will be relatively easy. Whew! It's all finally coming together, and I'm truly grateful. So, I will be recording some of Leo's music, some of Palma's music, some of KC's music, and maybe Rick will let me record some of his, too? I'll also be doing my own rendition before the holidays of " Together at Christmas, Again " as requested, for GoodOldDreams .....Awwwww, it probably won't be so good , but it'll SURE BE FUN !!! LOTS of good news from my corner, eh? I love sharing with you, and hearing what you all have to share as well......It's quite a crew we have here, and again, we've got our own Web Master to thank for that....Rick, you and your hard work and devotion to this site NEVER, EVER goes unnoticed. I wish you all the best from here in my corner, Tim

I wish you all the best from here in my corner, Tim Hi Tim and all... Speaking of music. Here is my most recent song. It was recorded about six months ago. This is only a one minute snippet. The song is called "The 18 Moons Of Saturn". In the song all 18 moons of Saturn are named along with the composition of what the moons are made of. It's a very scientific and artistic song. Here are the lyrics in the snippet: Light Elements Hydrogen, helium Eighteen moons Atlas, Prometheus Pandora, Hyperion Telesto Rings composed of crystalline ice Ring system Saturn is mystery galore galore, galore, galore... Hope you enjoy... It's different - but most of my songs are different. My newest group is called Rick ME. The ME stands for Millenium Edition. Here is the link to download the song so you can listen to it on your computer: h1.ripway.com/RickH/TrackNo03.wma

You're right, it's different, but this is the thing about song writers that really makes me understand what a talent it is to write songs - the ability to "draw" from somewhere - you "drew" your lyrics, and consequently your "music" from Saturn. How very cool. So, I have a question for you - in YOUR writing process, does the music come first, or the lyrics. I think I've mentioned that I've written a few songs and my process was to write the lyrics first, then the music. Billy Joel always wrote music first, then lyrics. Palma writes them simultaneously, and I'm not sure about Leo - which comes first, dude? I find it fascinating to find out how people "create" their songs, so I'd like to know what your process is, Rick. Thanks for sharing this snippet. I hope to hear more and more of your work. This was good. Posted by Ming on Today at 8:34am

Wow, Ming - this is great news - so you and your brother share a place - that's great. And you two are close - even better news. I'm glad I asked! I like it when the answer is a happy one!
