Yes, Rick - it definitely ALL started because of the magnificent interview you conducted with Palm. It's amazing what all has happened since that interview, isn't it? I have some photos to share from last night, thanks to Frank Rendo. Frank got some great photos, and Palm just sent me a few more, so I plan to share a couple of them with you. I still have some moving about of them to do, but when I get that done, I'll post a fabulous photo of Palm and Martin. I have to say, Rick, that your interview, and my consequent purchase of The Broken Cup certainly changed my life in a big way. I have met, and have become great friends with many people in Long Island, because of this interview, and the introduction by you to Palma. I recall you mentioning in "Rick Henry's World" about how intense you were with your drawing - your art, and about how much time it takes. Well, I understand that so well. I have loved every single minute that I have spent working towards this goal which, I am most hopeful, may have come to fruition last night. That's pretty powerful, so I'll say it once more - The goal I have worked towards for the past 3 years, of getting Palma's songs to the right person - getting them heard by the right people - may very well have COME TO FRUITION last night. Yeeeeee Hawwwwww!! Anyone who has read through Tim's Musings, or other threads here in Tim's Corner - certainly if anyone reads my blogs...then they know how long it's taken me to get to this point. And I must tell you all, I am so gratified. I have loved every moment I have spent researching, and/or trying to find information - or writing about these great artists - and having the tremendous opportunity to meet and befriend these individuals, I can't really put it into words. I am blessed, and I know it. The neat thing is....this is JUST the beginning. So, thank you for that interview, Rick. Thank you actually seems trite, but it's the best two words I have for you. More to come. As always, I wish you all the best from here in my corner, Tim

Nice job here, Frank. and I think this one looks like Martin is earnestly trying to find out all he can about Palma, and her music - although he had plenty of info about all of that already. Maybe it's just confirmation, you suppose? I'm just jokin, anyway. ;)This photo courtesy of Frank Rendo, too. Can't wait to hear about the show!!! It's tomorrow night - Sunday - in Atlantic City. Martin tole me he plans to introduce Palm as the writer of the song, and will have a few other things to say during his performance, I feel quite sure...especially having now met her, himself. Until I have more to report, I wish you all the best from here in my corner, Tim

Is it time for the show report? I hope all went well on the big night! Indeed, it is. I have received a great account of the evening from Frank, who accompanied Palma to Atlantic City, along with another mutual friend, Jackie Carey - Jackie was part of the "family" who sang with me on Remembering Christmas. Yes, I've heard from Frank, I've also spoken with Palm, and I've heard from Martin, too! I'll print out some of the info so I can reference it, and be sure I get it right. I do remember (because I can just picture it) Frank told me that after Martin introduced Palm, and the audience went nuts, cause LOVE ME FOR WHAT I AM is very popular in the Philippines, so they were quick to recognize the song's composer - I'm told that Palma "blew kisses" to the crowd. Now, THAT, I can picture! So, thanks for asking, wj7....more to come, and perhaps another photo or two. (I'm waiting on an "okie dokie" first). Until then, I wish you all the best from here in my corner, Tim

The trip to Atlantic City took just at 2 1/2 hours, which went very fast in one sense....the trio listened and enjoyed Martin's "Souvenirs" CD during that trip, feeling he truly has talent, and is an amazing artist. I understand everyone was a bit disappointed in Atlantic City, itself. I had told Palm that Ann and I had traveled to Atlantic City a few years ago, and found it to be most depressing - even "dirty looking." It was gloomy the day we went - cool and overcast with just a bit of mistiness in the air, so I thought perhaps that might have something to do with our dislike of it. But apparently, these three felt much the same way. Tacky, dumpy, and gaudy. I got a more verbal description of it from Palm, but I won't print that here. It was funny, though! Here's a photo of "Handle Pullin' Palma" After a bite of lunch, they went into the show area. Martin hit the stage right at 2 pm sharp, without fanfare or intro! I'm told he was amazing! His performance was as hard hitting as Wayne Newton's shows (I've seen Wayne do a show, and it is hard hitting - and well done). And I'm told that Martin was in excellent voice. In addition to his great sense of humor that ran off the cuff throughout the entire show, the show ran a solid 2 hours and 20 minutes, without an intermission. He gave his all. Here is a photo of Martin on stage at the House of Blues, Atlantic City, November 9, 2008 When Martin was singing LOVE ME FOR WHAT I AM, Palm enjoyed seeing the people she could see as they sang the chorus with Martin. I'm told it was just a beautiful moment. Also, when Martin introduced Palm and asked for her to stand up, of course she did, then, as I had mentioned previously, she sent kisses to the audience and I'm told she's always loved to do that!!! I can picture it, and I just know those people loved that she did it!! I had said to her that I thought she would be amazed at whatever emotions came up and to expect that they would as she listened to her intro by Martin, and then him singing one of HER songs - and I understand she was truly thrilled! Frank said it was a beautiful few moments. Martin later told them that had he known where Palm was sitting, he would have had her come on stage...although he was 5 feet up, so it would have been quite a pick-up from down below. He said if she had been closer, he would have had her come on from backstage. Martin told me in recent correspondence that he is, indeed, a hopeless romantic.....perhaps had it worked out for Palm to have been on stage, he might have sung "to" her. Undoubtedly. Though I believe that Palma would have loved to be able to see the faces of the people there all singing the chorus of LOVE ME, she was literally enveloped in the sound of all of them singing on that chorus with Martin - such a gratifying experience for her. It had been prearranged that Palm and Frank were to meet up with Martin backstage after the show, per Martin's request, but I understand that Ching (the individual who booked Martin into the House Of Blues in the first place, and who worked out all the details for Palm and Martin to meet) was nowhere to be found when the show was over, so the three of them made their way backstage on their own. Once past security, they found the entourage, and Martin. He left his group and walked over, seeing Frank and giving him a big handshake, then he embraced Palma and at that moment, he told her how MUCH he likes another of her songs, WHAT THE OCEAN KNOWS. Palm mentions this particular one in the interview she did for Rick three years ago. Unbelievable that, after all the time Martin had just spent on stage, and all those people "pawing" at him, that he remembered when he saw Palm to tell her how much he likes that song. He needed to leave them at that moment, but asked them to please join him in his suite for the after party, which they were happy to do. Palma and Jackie went on up to the suite, while Frank waited with the rest of the entourage. There he was able to chat with Ching's husband, Ramon (both of these individuals are physicians) and they discussed Martin's career (Ching and Ramon are Martin's aunt and uncle), and how they had hopes for that "SMASH HIT SINGLE" here in the USA. (How convenient, eh? GREAT timing, me thinks). Of course, Frank was very encouraging to him, and told him that all of us would do whatever we could to help make that happen. Meanwhile, Frank was observing Martin, and how genuine and kind he was to his fans. How cool. Frank went on to say that everyone that surrounded Martin was so nice, friendly, and generous. I'm happy to hear this information, truly. If Palma is going to be involved with Martin, which I think she is, I'm glad to know how nice everyone is, knowing they will treat her nicely, too. Frank made it to the party about an hour after Palma and Jackie went up, and she had already ingratiated herself with everyone there. THEY LOVED HER, and of course, they all wanted to discuss LOVE ME FOR WHAT I AM, and tell her what they loved about it. She was a most happy composer. Ching told Frank to be sure and EAT, and he said that at that point, Martin began working the room, chatting up this person and that person. After a time, he told Frank to come sit by him. Taking the opportunity, Frank told Martin more information about Palm's catalog of songs, including one that she had been working on for him, but hadn't finished, yet. He told Frank "Send me MP3's." He also told Frank he loved Palm's tune BEFORE THE FALL. After chatting with the band members, Palma joined them. Frank basically facilitated the conversation, first telling one what the other had said about the music, and vice versa. Back and forth they went, and because Frank was "ring leading" each learned a lot about the other. Thank you Frank for that bit of great middle-manning. I know how that feels, and actually, it's not a bad position to take, eh? Funny, since Thursday night, when Palma had given Martin some of her work, he'd already committed the melody and some of the words to BEFORE THE FALL to memory, and began singing it to Palma. How awesome!! Martin was quite generous with his time, and spent a good deal of it talking with the two of them. The Filipino community is a tight community, and it was good to know that they all gave the impression that they felt this new relationship would be a good boost to Martin. YES! I feel certain it will be. They left very happy and encouraged, yet the story doesn't end there. Both Frank and Palm knew HOW MUCH I would have loved to have been at that show. Of course they are aware that Martin and I correspond with each other, as we typically share our messages when it comes to Martin's career and Palma's involvement in it. I was DELIGHTED about the outcome of this - I mean, it's what I have worked on for three years now - the "right someone" to begin recording Palma's songs as their own. I have a very good feeling that Martin is that "right someone." I believe this whole thing is in Divine Order - it all came together so perfectly - I "happened" to find the concert posted, after searching for months - I happened to hear from Martin at around the same time - Palm happened to find Ching Legarda and everything just seemed to be "right." Frank called me twice on that day to keep me posted as to what was going on, and that they had arrived safely.....Palm phoned almost immediately after the show, prior to going up to the suite. Both of them kept me quite informed and they were inclusive of me in every aspect of the day. I SO appreciated that - such awesome friends. And on Thursday of this week, I got this package in the mail.....a gift from Frank. Frank has very good intuition and knew that I would enjoy Martin's newest CD, MY CHRISTMAS LIST. Yes, he was right - I was going to be ordering one, because I wanted it, but thought how cool it would have been had I mentioned it to someone so I could get a signed copy. I didn't have to mention it to anyone - they already knew. Frank had Martin inscribe the CD, which read "Tim, Music & Love this Christmas, and always! Martin Nievera." And, it didn't end there. I don't know if Frank actually knows that my writing name for Palma's blog, Martini, actually came from the movie, UNDER THE TUSCAN SUN, because I liked the character named Mr. Martini. He was the one who, in the movie, was the "go to" guy - he got things done, for anyone who asked his help, and loved doing it. I fancied his role, and I identified with it. Inside the package, along with the CD was a card - it's a card straight from UNDER THE TUSCAN SUN - filled with Sunflowers, much like the one Diane Lane's character fills out for another when first reaching Tuscany. Coincidence? I think not. Inside, Frank had pasted his ticket to the event, with a message - "You were there with us...thank you for all you did to make this happen." Can't tell you just what that meant to me, except to say it was such a beautiful, generous gesture. This was one of THE MOST THOUGHTFUL things I can ever remember. And, I have had other friends from this very forum who have been generous like this as well.....both thoughtful, and generous. (Thank you to each of you, as you all mean a great deal to me). I've said it before, and I will say it again - I am, truly, blessed! I have listened to Martin's CD several times since that evening - and it's very, very good. I think Martin has a beautiful, clear voice, and he seems to be most comfortable while singing. I like the selections of the songs, and I have even enjoyed the songs sung in Martin's native tongue, which I do not understand, but just am able to appreciate. So, there you have it. This recount of the day in Atlantic City is courtesy of Frank Rendo. Frank knew how important it would be to have this day documented, and so - he documented it for me, and right away, too. THANKS AGAIN, Frank. Here is a picture of Jackie Carey, Frank Rendo and Palma Pascale. Notice the CD in Frank's hand.....yes, that one was mine! THANKS FRANK for your help with this post, for the CD, the card and the sentiment, and for taking such excellent care of our friend Palma. I'm keeping good thoughts about all of this! As always, I wish you all the best from here in my corner, Tim Photos courtesy of Frank Rendo

Indeed this is a most interesting, timely and inspiring account. Thanks for keeping us informed of the progress, and thanks for your part in making things happen. The whole thing could have been a mess but the positive approach and steps taken by so many people have turned it into a blessing- after the dark and trying days of the past couple years, things are looking up for our dear friend! Truly the Lord watches over His people.

Ya know, O.E., you're so, so right about that. I left out so much of the back story, and it was agonizing at times. At the same time, I felt very, very good about this - and just had the feeling everything was in Divine Order - and it truly was. All of the pieces that had not fallen into place with other ventures (and there have been several that came close) just all happened very easily, once I got that first e-mail from Martin. Just getting a way to reach HIM was one of my biggest nightmares. Tenacity....something I have only learned in the last 10 years to practice. This time it paid off. Thank you for your comment, O.E., and your encouragement. I got even more fun items today - I'm well taken care of by the New York contingent. With regard to this venture, I was gifted with a CD of everyone's photos - Frank combined his, Palm's and Jackie (Carey, who went with them) and all of the AVI's and movies onto one disc. ???See, Frank didn't tell me the big surprise he had for me. I was again, quite touched. Right there on that disc was a VIDEO of Martin introducing Palma and Frank (and Fred, who couldn't go, but Martin just basically repeated the info about Palm that I'd sent him - he did well, too) - the video was complete with the whole story about how Palma discovered Martin singing the song she wrote on YouTube - and that she was there in the audience - and he sang the tune, and the audience loved it. There was a lot of electricity in that room, and I was SO pleased to have been whisked away to the concert via the video that Jackie shot, and she did well. From start to finish, I got it all. And it is priceless. And so, there are more photos that I thought I'd share - a couple, at any rate. And....on behalf of Palm and on behalf of me, too, I want to thank you all for having read through these musings with me, about the great fun and learning experience I've been having these last three years. I appreciate the input you've all given me, and your affirmations and encouragement. I know that Palma herself wants to sign on and visit the forum, (which she will, I assure you) but she is so incredibly busy - doing another album for Al Barbarino, and other projects like "Jesus Alive" that Frank is producing, and will be held in 2010, with the proceeds going to the homeless of Long Island. I don't know how she gets everything done that she is capable of doing - but I DO KNOW how much she appreciates the love and support of everyone here. She is so proud to be associated with this particular forum, and always mentions this forum as one of her very favorite Internet places. She treasures each one of you. And that's a nice segue. Yesterday, I received what Palm refers to as the "Senior Project." If you go back through this thread, probably on the first few pages, you will find a post from me that talks about Palm having to sing at a friend's funeral. Her friend is Joe Orlando, one of the co-musicians, and co-producers of this wonderful project for seniors entitled Hug Someone You Love. I recall that Joe made his transition just after I learned about this project, and unbelievably, Palm was able to sing at his funeral. She, Fred and Joe were all quite close. Fred called Joe a "wonderful, dear friend." The project is pretty great, I'll have to say. It is meant for seniors, and it has 17 original songs composed by Joe and Palma - and the production is credited to all three of them. Palm did all the arrangements, played piano, and orchestrated all the instruments except the drums which were done by her wonderful friend Robert "Sticks" Levy and another good friend, awesome trumpeter Peter Anthony Stora. He wails. Joe plays guitar, as does Fred. Fred is quite an accomplished musician in his own rite. I will be taking the project to some geriatric specialists that I used to work closely with at both large hospitals here in town. I truly believe there is a huge market for these. They are so incredibly well done - and the whole idea is to get the seniors to get involved POSITIVELY in Daily Activities, Exercise/Dance - Socializing - and Rest & Relaxation/Meditation. The songs are not just cutsie little tunes - there was a LOT of work that went into this project. They are well constructed, and I can picture a group of seniors listening and enjoying them very, very much. So my next project will be, I believe, to market these. But insofar as the whole idea of finding the right individual to record some of the other songs Palma has written, I truly believe it's Martin. I saw another video, that he didn't know was on, after the show when he was talking with Palma, telling her how much he liked WHAT THE OCEAN KNOWS...and he said "all of your music is beautiful - awesome." Well, we knew that already, yes? Shall I keep you posted? You decide. Until my next installment, I wish you all the best from here in my corner Tim

Tim, I would surely be interested in keeping track of how this develops. I feel at least some attachment and involvement with the progress of Palma's work. Okay, then O.E., I shall update you as I know of something. For now, I know this much - Palma sent me the two songs she just wrote for Martin - One is called ENDLESS NIGHT OF LOVE, and the other is called FLIGHT. ENDLESS NIGHT OF LOVE is a beautiful soaring ballad; something Carpenters might have performed. Very perfect for Martin's style. FLIGHT is a duet that Martin can do when entertaining with one of his female singers. Both are beautifully written....there are various modulations in ENDLESS NIGHT OF LOVE - Palma asked Frank to cut the demos to send to Martin. Frank, of course, does another outstanding job. They had only two hours to get both songs recorded and mixed, etc. Piece of cake, it seems...they got them both done, and sent to Martin. And, to me. I'm delighted to hear from you, O.E., and I will definitely keep you posted. For now, I wish you all the best from here in my corner, Tim

It's Christmastime and time for a carol; time to sing about the little King - to fill the bowl and roll-out the barrel, have ourselves a fling! We greet a friend or welcome a stranger; let him sing or cheer him on his way. And celebrate the child in a manger, born on Christmas day! Good cheer for you and for me with pleasure and glee to share! Oh, we're so happy to be together on yuletide square. It looks like snow, and falls like snow; take a moment, take a look around and say as snowflakes fall, Merry Christmas to one and all! It's Christmastime really sort of relates to you how I'm feeling. The wonderful time of the year when we celebrate the birth of Christ is, truly, right around the corner, and I am enjoying the feelings surrounding me. The love of friends and family - the beautiful lights - the snow - the wonderfully decorated trees - the varied "mangers." It's all so fun, and it all reminds me that a baby was born in a manger, wrapped in swaddling clothes; and they called him Jesus. Wow - what an impact all of that is for me. I hope each of you are feeling the wonders of Christmas, as well. I know I have been blessed with an abundance of friends; all of you are in that count. Forum friend, Timo, had mentioned that he "wished he could hear" the concert Beth and I did in September, and perhaps some other recordings, which I was able to send to him. I'm happy he liked them. Imagine my surprise when I went to the mailbox a few weeks ago to find a package from Timo. He kindly sent me a wonderful - outstanding recording of a group that has become quite popular throughout Finland, as I understand it - and I can certainly "hear" why. This group is called RAJATON. I will call them an acappella jazz group. They are, truly, amazing. I would liken them to the Manhattan Transfer vocally - but they go beyond that - they do all of the rhythm, bass, etc., and their voices can definitely sound like muted trumpets, and cymbals, and a host of other percussion instruments - and they sing amazingly. I cannot understand a word of what they're singing, lyrically - but the music definitely "speaks" to me. This particular CD is a 2 CD-set, and there are many varied styles here. This is a group of 6, and they have really beautiful voices. They do that tight vocal harmony that I just love....gets me every time. They do lovely madrigal-type ballads, as well as upbeat highly jazz influenced tunes, like their rendition of Jingle Bells. It's actually called "Kulkuset" but they don't fool me. It's JINGLE BELLS. Lookie, Lookie - here's the URL to Rajaton doing Kulkuset on YouTube. ENJOY! www.youtube.com/watch?v=VSIRwfnpN6YAs Timo knows, I truly appreciate this lovely gesture, and the music is solid gold. I couldn't really figure where to post this - in the international language thread, or in the Christmas music thread, or here in Tim's Musings. You know now which I chose. I have other things to comment on, too. So - thank you, Timo, for this wonderful music. And, the friendship. That's the important piece I wanted to get to. There are many of you who are quite generous, and have shared your thoughts, your time, copies of Carpenters and others music, stories, photos, and much more. I'm quite blessed to be a part of this group of individuals. And I'm really aware of my great fortune. So, thank you for all of the wonderful gifts over the years, but most of all, thank you for the friendships. They mean more than I can ever be able to tell you. Now, one other little tidbit of information I wanted to pass on to you, cause I just think this is so awesome. I've written before, right here in this thread, about the technology we have now, and how unbelievable it is - what we can be connected to via the internet, and the information we can instantaneously obtain! I'm used to having that ability to "Google" just about anything, and if you try long enough, with many various combinations, you can literally find just about anything you could ever think of. One thing technology has brought our way is SKYPE. For those of you that don't know, SKYPE is a software program that allows people to either talk computer to computer, or to see each other, via computer cam, or web cam. Earlier this week, I was having a speakerphone conversation with both Palma and Fred, who were working at the studio. Palm had asked me to call so the three of us could discuss something - something they wanted my input on. Fred asked me if I knew about SKYPE - which I told him I did, somewhat - familiar with it, at least. He told me of a session he had done not so long ago with a fellow who brought his own web cam, and he used his laptop, and another individual was actually "brought in" via SKYPE to provide yes's and no's on whatever the fellow was recording. This person on the other end of the computer was apparently providing HIS input, in real time, DURING the recording session. Fred asked me if I had a camera or a web cam. I reminded him I'd just purchased a mac, and they have cameras built-in to them. He suggested he would purchase the web cam, and that they thought it would be great for me to SKYPE into the session (it's free, by the way), and Fred indicated he would project me onto the Flatop screen in the main control room. All of this occurs in real time, and I would be able to watch Palm and/or Frank record, and be able to discuss with Fred the things he is doing as he is engineering the project. Can you believe that? All I have to do is dial into Tiki, and join Palm, Fred, and Frank during a session. Who knows, in a few years, the mics might be good enough I could add a vocal part or something. I can't wait to try it. We'll probably try it for the first time after the first of the year. it will be so cool to be able to be a part of the process - and for them to ask me to join them during sessions - well, you can just imagine how grand that made me feel. Quickly - to finish up - I got the two tracks done that I will be using at church on Christmas Eve for the candelighting service - Joseph's Song, and Someday. Both of them are such gorgeous songs with stories as told by Joseph. I really fussed about the Joseph's Song track - it seemed it just wouldn't come together. But I got inspired at the very end, and knew what I needed to do to "fix" it, and voila! It worked. It took me hours to get the tracks orchestrated, but I must say, it's getting easier the more I do it. Anyway, i will record vocals this coming weekend, and have some backing vocals on one of them already. I will be singing them live to my track on the 24th, but I would like to have complete songs, so will also have a recorded lead vocal track, as well. I think they came out pretty well - I'm happy with them. I'll let you know how it goes after Christmas. Having caught you up-to-date, I want to end with this. I wish you all the very finest of holidays - I hope your Christmas is beautiful; full of warmth, joy, health, and good cheer. I hope you enjoy thinking of the Christmas story - and that you are surrounded by all the people you hold dear - family, friends, favorite pets. And, of course, I wish you ALL THE BEST from here in my corner, Tim

Thank YOU, Tim! In addition to being a man with words you are also the most skilled musician and an outstanding singer. It's so great to know you! Many warm and merry Christmas wishes to you from Finland, timo

That is exciting Tim, that with the technology you described you can now have a more active part in the recording work of Palma, Frank and Fred. Thanks too for the wonderful insights into Christmas. I was particularly interested in your use of the song "Someday" as reflective of Joseph-is this the same song that appears on the Carpenters "Ticket To Ride"? That's one of the great things about art, there are so many interpretations and great applications. Timo, I surely enjoyed the song by Rajaton. In every way I can see why this talented group is so popular. You have shared quite a few great musical excerpts on the site here and we thank you for this!
