Karen looked at the box and knew it was a bracelet. She then remembered being in a jewelry store with Nathan while they where shopping. She remembered expressing interest in an exquisite diamond and aquamarine tennis bracelet, but had said no when she found out it carried a price tag of close to four thousand dollars.
As she opened the box Karen felt tears start to run down her cheeks. Nathan had gone back and bought the bracelet for her. Both Martha and Lynda were watching now as Karen gently lifted the platinum and gem stone circlet out of the box. Both women let out a gasp as their eyes went wide.
“ Nathan it’s absolutely stunning.” Karen said and jumped up to kiss him on the cheek. “ Thank you so much.” She whispered in his ear.
Nathan kissed Karen back and then took the piece of jewelry and placed it on her wrist, and again Karen hugged him close.
“ I don’t think I have seen that much ice in my entire life-time.” Martha said as she looked at the bracelet as it hung around Karen’s wrist. “ There must close to five karats of diamonds in that thing.”
“ About that and another four in aquamarines. That is Karen’s birthstone. When the jeweler showed it to us a couple weeks ago he said that it was very rare to find stones that dark in color.” Nathan explained of the dark green-blue stones. He was delighted to see Karen’s genuine happiness glowing in her eyes and the smile on her lips.
It was then that Lynda took Karen aside and the two women spoke for a brief moment in whispers and Lynda walked over to the piano that was in the corner and sat. Karen meanwhile turned off the stereo and then joined Lynda.
“ My piano playing is a bit rusty so bare with me.” Lynda said to Karen and then started to play the first bars of “ I Won't Last A Day Without You.”
Nathan had gathered Chris up in his arms and sat him on his lap on the couch. Martha sat beside her son. Karen looked at Nathan and began to sing. Her love for him in her eyes.
“ Day after day I must face a world of strangers,
Where I don't belong,
I'm not that strong,
It's nice to know that there's someone I can turn to,
Who will always care,
Your always there,
When there's no getting over that rainbow,
When my smallest of dreams won't come true,
I can take all the madness the world has to give
But I won't last a day without you,
So many times when this city seems to be without a friendly face,
A lonely place,
It's nice to know that you'll be there if I need you,
And you'll always smile,
It's all worthwhile,
When there's no getting over that rainbow,
When my smallest of dreams won't come true,
I can take all the madness the world has to give,
But I won't last a day without you,
Touch me and I and up singing,
Troubles seem up and disappear.
You touch me with the love your bringing,
I can't really lose when your near,
When your near my love,
If all my friends have forgot their promises,
They're not unkind just hard to find,
Just hard to find,
One look at you and I know that I could learn to live without the rest,
I've found the best... ”
Lynda closed out the song and then smiled up at her brother and mother.
Nathan sat looking at Karen. He was dumbfounded. His heart was in his throat and he could feel tears brimming in his eyes. He never felt so in love as he did at that very moment.
It was Christopher that broke the spell of silence that Karen had woven. He jumped down from his father’s lap and began to once again play with one of the many toys he’d received.
Karen thanked Lynda for playing for her and then moved over to Nathan and sat on the of the couch.
“ I love you so much.”
Nathan cupped Karen’s cheek in his hand and managed to say in a hoarse whisper.
“ That was the best gift I have ever received.”
Nathan pulled Karen into his lap and then kissed her.
