For the next few days Karen was delighted to show Nathan all her old haunts. Her old public school and the places that she’d loved to hang out with friends. She also enjoyed the time with Debbie and Scott and her godson. Her friend had insisted on putting them both up in there spare room. Before Karen knew it, it was time to leave for New Hampshire to pick up Nathan’s son.
They where on a connecting flight to LA so the stop over was only forty minutes. Christopher and his mother where sitting in the waiting room.
When Christopher saw his father he ran into Nathan’s arms and was scooped up. He let out a squeal of joy.
“ Daddy!”
“ Hey there sport. How you doing?” Nathan kissed his son’s cheek.
“ Good. I missed you.”
“ I missed you too, Tiger.” Nathan saw his ex-wife standing off to the side. “ Hello Jennifer. It’s been awhile. I’d like you to meet Karen. Karen this is the mother of my son Jennifer.”
“ Hello Jennifer. Nice to meet you.” Karen put out her hand.
“ Karen… You look awfully familiar. You’re that Carpenter singer aren’t you? I was sorry to hear about your health problems.” Jennifer said coolly without shaking Karen’s hand. She turned back to Nathan and handed him Christopher’s baggage. She then kissed her son on the forehead and said.
“ Mommy loves you. See you in ten days.” Jennifer looked up to her ex. “ Take care of him.” Jennifer said as she turned to leave.
“ Well that went over great. Man, she’s glacial.” Karen arched an eyebrow.
“ Jennifer has always been that way with other people. One of the many reasons why our marriage failed.” Nathan huffed as he put Christopher down and picked up the suitcase and carry on bag.
“ Here Christopher, hold my hand while we walk to the plane.” Karen held out her hand to the boy. He looked up at her and then took it in his own.
“ Come on. Let’s get back to California. It’s freezing here.” Nathan led the way.
Karen took the time on the plane to get to know her future stepson. Christopher was a pint-sized version of his father. At the age of five he was young enough that Karen could get to know and love him like he was one of her own. She was looking forward to having a chance to practice parenting. She still wanted to have children of her own and she was bound and determined to do it with Nathan. For now she was content with Christopher.
When the three were seated in their chairs and Christopher was buckled in Nathan introduced his son to Karen.
“ Are you going to be my new mommy?” The boy asked looking at Karen.
“ Well, I’d never want to try and replace your real mom Christopher. I’d like to think that you and I will get to know one another and then maybe as time goes on, you and I can have the sort of relationship that you and your mommy share.” Karen smiled brightly and looked at Nathan he nodded his encouragement.
Christopher then smiled at his Dad.
“ Daddy, I like Karen. She’s a nice lady.”
Nathan beamed.
“ I like Karen a lot too. In fact I love her very much.”
As the plane took off and started climb to it’s cruising altitude Christopher began to wince. His ears where popping, and it was not a feeling that the boy liked, tears welled and then slowly started down his cheeks. Karen noticed this and she began to gently rub the boy’s temples with her fingertips. After a few minutes it was over and Christopher stopped his crying. Karen unbuckled his seat beat and held him in her arms and began to sing in a soft tone.
“ Sing, sing a song
Sing out loud,
Sing out strong,
Sing of good things not bad,
Sing of happy not sad.
Sing, song a song,
Make it simple,
To last your whole life long,
Don’t worry that it’s not good enough,
For anyone else to hear,
Just sing,
Sing a song…”
When Karen was finished she felt that Christopher had fallen asleep in her arms.
Nathan sat staring at Karen as she held his son, a lump in his throat.
“ Karen that was just beautiful. I don’t know what to say.” Nathan leaned over and kissed her and then gently put the small pillow from Christopher’s seat behind the boy’s head. When the stewardess came to ask about drinks she looked at Karen and smiled.
“ Can I get the little one a blanket ma’am?”
Karen nodded.
“ Thank you. I’ll have a sparkling water and vodka and for the lady she will have a screwdriver.” Whispered Nathan in a hushed tone. So as to not to wake his son.
“ Would you care for the chicken or the fish for dinner.”
Both Karen and Nathan said in unison.
“ Chicken.”
The attendant nodded and said that she would be right back.
The flight went by without a hitch and Christopher slept for all of it except for twenty minutes to eat a few mouthfuls of chicken and carrots off of Karen’s plate. It was not until it was time for the plane to land that Karen had to gently wake Christopher and he was buckled back into his seat.
“ Are we in California Daddy?”
“ Almost Chris. We are landing than we have to drive to Karen apartment. You will like it there. There is a pool, and jungle gym for you to play on too.”
“ And I’m sure that my parent’s will love to meet you too Christopher. When we go for Christmas dinner.” Karen took the boys hand her own. She smiled brightly. Finally her future was looking the way she’d always planned it. I’m going to get my house with a picket fence and be a mother…
