Hi All,
Thought I would do another thoughts on another favorite album of mine...CARPENTERS...released in 1971. I bought this album at a second hand store in Winnipeg, Manitoba. My now single mother moved the 4 of 5 us kids to her family in Swift Current, Saskatchewan. I went back in August 1989 to visit my 15 year old sister living in Winnipeg. So we were reminscing and catching up on all that had transpired in my life and hers(drama...abuse...etc). Well, I was playing this album on a friends' record player, and so my memories of my sister and I, are entwined with this particular album and her. I remember crying with her, while listening to this album...the aching beauty of the songs. Even though, it had been 18 years since this album had been released, it sounded so contemporary and like it had just been recorded yesterday...
I also like the album. The picture in them is nice. Although I am NOT a fan of Richard's see thru shirt. Or his hair style ( but I guess I shouldn't poke fun cuz one day, people will look at my past photos and say, "You wore THAT!") but Karen looks beautiful. Very classy.
RAINY DAYS AND MONDAYS...very poignant song. Her reading is brilliant! And she was only a 21 years old! I think she lay flat on her back to sing this song...at the studio. Which if you have ever tried it, (and I did once)...it is kinda hard to sing on your back, with lengthy phrases in between. Anyways, this song is amazing. Very Adult in terms of the message I guess. Also, she sings it so well, that I wonder what was going on in her mind, when she sang it in the studio. Was she thinking of her pain? Of her feeling like she didn't belong?
SATURDAY...a pleasing song...not much to add. Richard's vocals are good! But still again, I wonder what it would have been like if Karen had sung this. I don't mean to put Richard down, but Karen was THE singer of the group. He could carry a tune but...well then again, maybe Karen wanted Richard to sing this tune, as she really believed in him.
LET ME BE THE ONE...I really adore this song. I like the lyrics, the musicality, the harmonies...the message. I always wonder how this song would have done, had it been released as a single, as it was supposed to be...but instead they released SUPERSTAR...
A PLACE TO HIDEAWAY...First off...this song is GEM!! A superb song filled with pain, wonder, hope. This in my opinion, is a companion piece to Maybe It's You...Karen's reading is simple but if you read between the lines, she is complex. She is trying to say more than she can sing. Of how she wants to hide almost within herself...to retreat from the world that has caused her pain in not understanding who she is...I can really, really relate to this song. This song pierces the very essence of my soul...
FOR ALL WE KNOW...wonderful song. A bit difficult to sing in some ways, but Karen does amazing things with it...Since the success of WE'VE ONLY JUST BEGUN...it's almost as if Karen took a step back to discover that maybe, she had been to rash and too happy in BEGUN...but now, she has given it some thoughts...and maybe there are some doubts...
SUPERSTAR...brilliant song! To think that she read the lyrics written on a napkin, and sang it then and there...it's as if this song is tailor made for Karen. Gorgeous rendition!! And a million seller to top it off. I always laugh when Bette says something snide to Karen, and Karen laughs it off and says, well she's the one with the gold record for that song...which is true. Karen's rendition is THE one. Although, I am reminded that when I first heard The Singles 1969-1973 for the first time on 8 Track in Spring of 1988...when I heard this song, I would write down the lyrics...but I could never fully understand the beginning of the second verse...I got..."Low linen is such a sad affair..."...And I could never fully understand what Linen had to do with this song...it wasn't until later that I read the lyrics, which were "Loneliness is such a sad affair..."I think it was her phrasing and the pauses that got me into trouble...
Druscilla Penny...I am glad Karen did not sing this song. This song is perfect for Richard. Ironic...but with the preceding song being about a groupie falling in love with a guitarist...and now Richard singing about a girl named Druscilla, wanting to be with any guy...nice ditty.
ONE LOVE...another GEM! Sad song. Well done by Karen. "Few are the choices we are given...the sands of time pass quickly by..." seems to foreshadow her death...She truly did have a magical heaven sent gift!!
BACHARACH/DAVID medley...Awesome!! I love this medley! I always wonder what Burt Bacharach thought of this song!! Well done versions of his tunes!
SOMETIMES...I used to dislike this song. Thought the long piano part was boring...and just killed it. But when Karen sang...very lovely. Now, I like the whole song. Very, very classy! For it's time. Meaningful.
My jumbled thoughts,
