Hitting #12 on the Pop charts were the Carpenters cover of the Herman's Hermits song There's a Kind of Hush(All over the world). It's a catchy tune and showed that the Carpenters were very capable at recording an classic pop song and making it their own.
The next single was I NEED TO BE IN LOVE and it only hit #25 on the Charts. This was the first time Carpenters did not reach the top 20. It was a poignant song about love passing by and wanting to be in love. Karen stamped her voice and emotion onto the Richard Carpenter-John Bettis partnership along with Albert Hammond. A video was made of this song and in a segment Mary Rudolf (now Richard's wife) make a cameo "walk by" appearance.
The album A KIND OF HUSH is released and goes gold. In the United Kingdom it charts at #3 on that album chart, while in the U.S. it only reached #33 - the first Carpenters album to not make the top 15.
GOOFUS, the single is released and charts at #56. This song will break the Carpenters successful run of Top 40 hits.
THEIR VERY FIRST TV SPECIAL by the Carpenters is aired on ABC network and does extremely well. John Denver and Victor Borge are the guests. Karen does a few duets with John Denver, and a nice chemistry is evident. Richard and John do a humorous skit. Karen dresses like Cher in a pink fur coat singing, I CAN DREAM CAN'T I. Karen also sings some of their classic hits in 2 medleys. It's a nice special with lots of laughter, Richard in a car race, with Olivia Newton-John making an impromptu guest appearance helping Richard celebrate his win. Karen also sings a gorgeous version of Superstar and Rainy Days and Mondays. Her drum solo is a definate highlight. After the success of this TV special, more specials are offered.
Karen and Richard also head to England and Japan to do their postponed concert tours. While there, Karen films the video of their song There's a Kind of Hush with Richard and their band. Which will appear on the 1985 video YESTERDAY ONCE MORE.
