Hi All, I had always loved the version of Karen singing SILENT NIGHT but in German for their 2nd Christmas special in 1978. She does a marvelous, rich version of it. I was always disappointed that they had Georgia Engel sing with Karen. She sang the high part but for me, it kind of ruined it for me...but then Karen kept smiling at Georgia so maybe Karen thought the world of Georgia (from the Mary Tyler Moore Show). It' s not that Georgia had an awful voice. It was pleasant, but then anyone that is not established, singing next to Karen is going to face ridicule. Oh Well. I wonder if they could omit Georgia's vocal and keep Karen's and work around that...
My thoughts, Cameron

Richard recorded the specials quite well, so I wouldn't be surprised if the vocals could be split.
Pretty much anybody next to Karen is going to be greatly inferior, unless of course you're someone in the league of Barbra Streisand, Aretha Franklin, or k.d. lang.
Speaking of Georgia I did hear her sing on an episode of The Mary Tyler Moore Show, she sang "Fever" at the very end of show. She was really very good. She was such an excellent character on the show, she always brought a smile to me.

:)Hi everybody..I don't recall much of any of the specials, and that's why i really want to purchase some of those. Variety shows were really the thing on tv in those days..Smothers Bro. , S. and Cher, J. Denver, Captain and Tennille..Carps.. Carol Burnett..nowadays..mostly crime and law shows or Reality shows... anyway, I liked Georgia on MTM too and then she was on Coach, and played a similar character. Don't remember her singing , but as you said Rick, just about everyone pales in comparison to Karen. She certainly stands as a true original that no one can replace.

I remember one of Carol Burnett's anniversary specials. There were highlights of various guests that she got to sing with. One of them was the Carpenters. They were doing some of the Bacharach/David medley from the tan album. Though I did watch the Carol Burnett show as a kid, I don't remember that episode.
Years later, I caught an episode of the Vicki Lawrence talk show. This was probably in the early to mid 90's. The show dealt on celebrities and eating disorters. They mentioned Karen, and Vicki recalled how sad it was when she died. Vicki said that she recalls when they were on the old Carol show and beautiful her voice was and how it contrasted with the photo of Karen on the cover of People magazine.
a few memories...

Karen's recording of Silent Night is just beautiful. I hope to hear the recording in German someday. She's sings so well in other langueages. She does Sing very well in both Spanish and Japanese.
