I love all of the Carpenters' Christmas songs. Each one is a special gift wrapped in the most exquisite gift wrap. Though I do have my particular favorites.
He Came Here For Me - Karen's performance is personal and beautiful. I love the words and the thought. It's a beautiful song.
(There's No Place Like) Home For The Holidays - This song has that good time feeling like "Those Good Old Dreams" or "Top Of The World".
The Christmas Waltz - I like the rhythm and timing of this song. This style is particularly good for Karen.

Mine would be...HAVE YOURSELF A MERRY LITTLE CHRISTMAS. I think her vocal reading is out of this world...right now, I will go put the song on and write a synopsis on it...WAIT...
Her vocal reading is gorgeous. This song suits her to a tee. Her reading is so warm and cozy...sort of intimate. I can tell she has a bluesy feel to this song. I can imagine being in a cafe and hearing her sing this song, while sipping hot chocolate or cider. Her reading grows and grows and it is Christmas personified. You know that she is in complete control of this song. I wish they had done a video of this song. I love the ending..."Hang your shining star upon the highest bow...and have yourself a merry little Christmas now..."the way she ends it is so mellow...so wonderful. I know that many other singers can do this song...but I think Karen's version is the tops in terms of range, feeling, emotions, phrasing, warmth.

My favorite Christmas song by the Carpenters is "Have yourself a merry little Christmas." I had never heard the song before Karen sang it and I still don't think anyone sings it better. "Merry Christmas Darling" and "The Christmas Song (Chestnuts)" are close seconds. On the other hand, "Ave Maria" and "I head the bells on Christmas day" are also awesome. On the other hand....

AVE MARIA the song is so chilling, so gorgeously sung...that is the highest praise I can give Karen. I think this song is one of her all time masterpieces...if anyone thought that Karen couldn't sing...well after a listen, you would know that she could sing. Her breath control is awesome! Inspiring! I heard her sing this LIVE on tape...and she is almost word for word perfect like her album version. Just a wonderful song and wonderful way to close the Christmas Portrait album...
My thoughts, Cam
