Man!!! I can't remember posting that. I love the movie Contact but I was dissapointed that the C's were not included in the radio signals traveling away from Earth into deep space. JIM

Hey Yinz Guys!! I was so surprised when I saw that post from so long ago. As soon as I read it I began to think of your interest in short wave radio and what types of variables I had not accounted for in my post. I was not sure radio waves actually traveled at light speed or not. As I mentioned in the thread I kinda stole the idea from Contact. When you think about it the first official public radio broadcast that could be detected by extraterestrials would be from KDKA Pittsburgh!! I also have had the same thoughts about the sounds from earth and the voyager space missions. The sound of Karens voice would certainly make the perfect intergalactic greeting from Earth. JIM

I am not sure but I think that Calling Occupants was originally written by one of the Beatles but someone correct me if I'm wrong. When I was young I'd listen to the radio(AM) and at night I would scan the AM band to find the most distant city courtesy of the ionesphere. I have been reading up on the SETI project that involves individuals participating in the search for A Wow signal from the comfort of home and that sounds so interesting!! I hope your the one who finds it. Contact is a movie that I watch at least once a month. It has so much significance! Todays Science fiction, tommorows sience fact. Thats a hand you can bet all your chips on. JIM

I am not sure but I think that Calling Occupants was originally written by one of the Beatles but someone correct me if I'm wrong. JIM Hi Jim "Calling Occupants..." was written by a prog rock trio named Klaatu. They released 5 albums between 1976 and 1982. With the release of their first album many people speculated they were the Beatles reunited, because their faces were not shown on the album and they sounded somewhat like the Beatles. Of course this was only a rumor - they were not the Beatles. The following is a short interview I did with Dee Long (from Klaatu) a few months ago. This is part one in a series I am attempting to do. I am going to try and contact artists and or songwriters of songs Carpenters covered to get their input on what they thought about C's recording their song(s) and how it changed their lives. The first is from Dee Long from the group Klaatu. In 1977 Carpenters covered the Klaatu song "Calling Occupants Of Interplanetary Craft" which was a moderate hit in the U.S., but a huge hit in other parts of the world. The following is an email I received from Dee Long: Hello Rick! I've always been a bit of a "Carpenters" fan. I may not be the one to answer these questions though, that song was written by Terry Draper and John Woloschuck, the other two Klaatu band members. It also made more money than any other Klaatu song, but not for me I suspect it did change the lives of Terry and John! Personally, when I first heard the Carpenters version I was thrilled. I was very surprised how true to the original it is. And to this day I'm pretty surprised they did it. I liked it then, and I still like it. I just wish they had covered one of my tunes If you'd like to speak to Terry or John you might best get them through our record company. John doesn't have e-mail, and Terry rarely uses it, so I don't have addresses for either of them. I'm a big fan of Karen Carpenters singing, and I was very sad when she passed. What a voice! Take care Rick. Dee Long www.deelong.com

Hey Rick! Thanks for the info! As soon as I started to read the interview I recognized it right away. I knew there was a connection to Occupants and something related to the Beatles that I had read in the past. Wow I think I need to consult a past post regression therapist. It is an interesting interview. I also loved your recent interview with the writer of All You Get From Love. JIM
