Karen and Richard headed into the studio to begin taping another Television Special entitled 25 Years: CLOSE TO YOU: The Carpenters. This would be a 2 hour special celebrating their finest moments in recording history, which would include concert footage, behind the scenes look on their lives, spoofs, candid moments, and a quick run through on their hits. Included in this special would be some knew songs, and reworked versions of some of their classics.
Karen also found time which would include recording a Christmas album, but this would not be with the Carpenters, but Karen's first solo Holiday album, and she was looking forward to this. She wanted a simplistic approach to this album, with some of the standards she had grown to love. Included was the 2 versions of AVE MARIA which would be joined into one arrangement. Another song was MARY DID YOU KNOW? and BREATH OF HEAVEN, which were both huge Gospel-Christian Contemporary hits.
When Karen recorded BREATH OF HEAVEN she wept upon singing it…it was such a personal song of hope and triumph. The song was about the fears and questions that Mary, the mother of God must have had, upon carrying baby Jesus, as she was just a very young teen mother. The album had been recorded on and off the past year, but it hadn't been hard for Karen to sing these holiday standards even when there was no snow. She could imagine Christmas and all the love it brought.
During Thanksgiving weekend KAREN AT CHRISTMAS, her album was released, and her 11th solo project. It was shipped platinum, and by December 25th, it was already double platinum, and the single BREATH OF HEAVEN hit # 2 on the pop charts and sold 1.1 million copies and another A.C.# 1 hit for 3 weeks, and on the Christian and Country Charts it hit # 1, as well.
Karen and the family had a month together before she was back at work again. They spent an enjoyable Christmas at home and one of Jon's sister and brother came down for a visit. It was good for the young kids to socialize with all of the younger cousins, and good for Karen and Jon to catch up Jon's family.
